Chuck Schumer: Boehner Could 'Rally Tea Party Troops' Around Harry Reid Debt Ceiling Plan

Chuck Schumer Debt Ceiling

07/25/11 09:13 AM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — The third ranking Democrat in the Senate says a deficit-reduction proposal put forward by Majority Leader Harry Reid has the best chance of ending the political stalemate and avoiding a government default.

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer tells MSNBC he expects the Nevada Democrat to release details of his plan later Monday. Schumer says the deal would last through 2012, cut spending by the same amount as borrowing is increased and contain no new taxes.

Schumer also says he believes no accord can be reached without the approval of President Barack Obama, Reid, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Schumer says he believes the Reid proposal is "the kind of thing Speaker Boehner can rally his tea party troops" to support.

Here's the problem with the right wing: When Bushie Jr. was "elected" he had a budget surplus from Clinton. Then he spent it all on a war he couldn't manange. Now, all the little righties who were so keen on 9/11 revenge don't want to pick up the tab for their religious/oil war. Tea Partiers think the route to a prosperous nation is to have no taxes at all. Republicans think the best way to prosper is to overtax the lower 95% and undertax the upper 5% (for whom capitalism has yielded the best results). Here's a novel idea: FLAT TAX. EVERYONE PAYS EQUALLY, WITH NO LOOPHOLES. Now that would be a coup.

I don't think the Tparty members will support anything. I listen to them on TV and they talk like they want the country to default on the debt.
I don't know what is in it so I don't know what it would do.

CHUCK is spending most of his time at the beach...he likes the Jersey shore with Wu and Weiner. They strategize about how to screw the rich without screwing themselves.

Stop it with the "entitlement" conversation. Do the math - The maximum SS retirement benefit is $28,800 per year (at 66 and paying in the max). The contributions you and your employer make are maxed out at 11,107. So if you contribute for 40 at that rate, you and your employer have forked over more than $440,000! It would take over 15 years to get back just what you and your employer have contributed - without adding in any interest at all. That would get you to the ripe old age of 81, at or very near the average life expectancy. So, there is not "entitlement", only getting back A LITTLE of what has been given to the government.

I retired at 70 and I am now 82. I do not think I will ever get what I have paid into it. However it is a good program. I also have my savings. a person cannot live on Social Security alone.
I want it to continue for my children and grandchildren. it is the best retirement plan you can get.

I'm 67 and still working, and I agree with everything you have said.

The problem is just that the dems haven't won their elections big enough to govern, now that they have solid issues (medicare preservation, air-head union-busting republicans) for the 2012 season, dems have chance to push on more balanced budget priorities. Republicans should take a tax reform now while they have the leverage, instead they are trying to rally around gimmicks while the corporate welfare recipients take them for a ride.

reid rally tea party? thats the problem with drugs.

I understand that Congress did have an agreement last night, and Reid took
it to Obama and he rejected it. So much for him saying to congress to put
together a plan that you agree on and I will sign it. The President is nothing
more that a perpetual lier!!

What is your source for this information? Unless you can give one, this could be nothing but a rumor started by someone trying to influence the debate from the right. (Karl Rove would certainly approve.)

If you believe President Obama is a perpetual liar, you're listening to such biased news sources that you can't comprehend reality. Quit listening to opinion newscasts and try doing your own research on the internet.

Maybe he got the info from a hacked phone?

Please tell us your source for this "interesting revelation". And BTW you might want to spell check as well (lier)

We can not trust Harry Reid, he always has smoke and mirrors and at the end
he stabs you in the back. If true 1Trillion is related to the pull down of our troops
that is already cooked into the books of the projected budget. No new savings,
good old Dems at work again, still spending, not reducing anything.

How comforting. The Tea Party could support Reid's plan. Yeah, it sounds like their kind of plan -- all cuts and no taxes. WTF?
09:49 AM on 07/25/2011
We didn't elect republicans in droves to rally around Harry Reid, that was what Pelosi was for and that's why we got rid of her as speaker.
10:21 AM on 07/25/2011
Agreed, You did not elect Republicans to govern through compromise but be an obstacle to Obama and the Democrats so that they can try and win back WH in 2012. I think they are doing an excellant job of that. But would that help them in 2012? I hope it does not.

Oh, please. There will be some budget-related vote in 2012 that the Teahatters will attach the tax cuts to and demand that they be extended or whatever it is will be held hostage. Or they'll just do what we all knew they were planning to do when we heard that the deal was to let them expire in 2012: run their presidential campaigns on "Obama is responsible for the largest tax hike in history!"
