Barack Obama Courts Latino Voters, Calls For Partner On Immigration Reform (VIDEO)

Obama

First Posted: 07/25/11 02:35 PM ET Updated: 09/24/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Republicans need to come forward to pass immigration reform, President Barack Obama said at a meeting of Latino advocacy group National Council of La Raza on Monday, continuing his push for Latino votes in 2012 amid concern over his record deportations of undocumented immigrants.

"I need a dance partner here, and the floor is empty," Obama said, referencing Republicans who formerly supported immigration reform and now say enforcement must be increased first. "Feel free to keep the heat on me, and keep the heat on Democrats, but here's the thing to remember: The Democrats and your president are with you. Remember who it is we need to change the laws."

But as Obama calls for immigration reform that is unlikely to pass Congress, Latinos and immigration reform supporters are becoming increasingly frustrated with the record numbers of people forced out of the country each year under his presidency.

A group of students stood during his speech to protest his deportation of young undocumented people, wearing shirts that read "Obama: Stop deporting DREAMers," a reference to the DREAM Act, a bill that would provide legal status to some undocumented young people who entered the United States as children.

HuffPost spoke to one of the students. WATCH:

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), a vocal critic of the Obama administration's deportation record, plans to appear at a rally in front of the White House on Tuesday, when he will call for the president to stop deporting young people and families of American citizens.

"I know some people want me to bypass Congress and change the laws on my own," Obama said on Monday, drawing a huge applause and chants of "Yes, You Can." "And believe me, right now, dealing with Congress right now -- the idea of doing things on my own is very tempting. Not just on immigration reform. But that's not how our system works."

Overall, the president's record on immigration issues remains fairly stark, with little progress toward the comprehensive immigration reform he promised to pass in his first term. The DREAM Act failed in the Senate in December despite passing the House.

"There is still some unfinished business," National Council of La Raza President Janet Murguia said in the president's introduction, pointing out the DREAM Act students still facing deportation.

Still, the president has made some inroads for Latinos: Hilda Solis, his labor secretary, is the first Latina to serve in the Cabinet, while Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina justice. Obama said many of his other legislative actions, such as education reform and last year's health care law were a "huge victory for the Latino community.

"These are victories for NCLR, they are victories for America, and we did it with your help," he said. "We kept our promises."

Meanwhile, the president has made a concerted effort to court Latinos for his re-election campaign, after he won the Latino population by large margins in 2008. His speech at National Council of La Raza's yearly conference is the third immigration-related address he has given in the last three months. Obama delivered a major immigration address at the Texas-Mexico border in May, visited Puerto Rico last month, and has hosted a number of Latino celebrities and activists at the White House.

Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice Education Fund, wrote in a HuffPost blog post that Latinos want to hear more from Obama than a reaffirmation of his support for the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform.

"They know that Republican control of the House means pro-immigrant legislative measures don't stand much of a chance in this Congress," Sharry wrote. "They want the president to use his authority to make life better in immigrant communities immediately."

If you want to know the true mission of La Raza, take a moment of your not-so-precious time and go to their website. There is a special section devoted to disspelling rumors like yours.

Wow. What a bunch we have here today. Going after kids who did nothing wrong, except to be brought here by their parents. Are ANY of you Christians? Catholics? Where is your love of your fellow man? Where is your compassion for those who have LESS than us? Have we NO responsibility towards them? Are we to ALWAYS look out only for ourselves? Those without power are EXACTLY the ones that Jesus INSTRUCTED US to tae care of. These kids had no power over what their parents did. They deserve a chance. Listen:

"33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? 34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest. 35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
_36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them, 37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me"

If y'all are not Christians, well, then, no problem, You have nothing to worry about. Keep up with the hate talk and all.

By God, I think you are right franath. So why not let the churches and their congregations do what they are supposed to do, and take care of those less fortunate. I doubt very seriously that the frames even had an inkling of the welfare state when they wrote the oft abused "general welfare" clause.

Sorry, individual Christians do not get off that easily. We are directed, commanded if you will, to HELP our fellow man - EACH of us, not just groups of us. On the government side, I think the "framers" knew EXACTLY what they they were doing - they had SEEN inequality and man's inhumanity to man and were determined to live in a society that addressed those situations.

Do it, Pres. Give a few thousand backdoor amnesty. the bite won't be too hard. You will almost voluntarily vacate the White House because of it, and we can get a President in there who represents Americans.

Like Reagan did, perhaps. I wish that the people who admire Reagan so much, had the LEAST little bit of his inate humanity.

I think Reagan would be ashamed of some of the things that have been said in this post.

I think reagan would have been ashaned that border security was never addressed, which was supposed to happen with the 1986 amnesty. Huge mistake.

Yeah, thanks for telling us what we already knew: You really, REALLY wish you were king, not President. That whole "separation of powers" thing is simply an unfortunate obstacle which, in your perfect world, would not exist. For you, King Barack, know what's truly best for all of us.

I am of the opinion that like any problem it can be turned into an opportunity. Do we really want to squander trillions on border security and rounding up illegals? Is there not a way to improve the current immigration program to allow for those that want to come here and work jobs that Americans do not want while still contributing to our tax base? My observation is that most latin American immigrants are only taking those kinds of jobs anyway. I see Chinese and Indian immigrants taking high tech and medical jobs. Not criticizing those groups as I assume that is because we do not have enough people here with those skills?? It would seem to me it should not matter how many immigrants come here as long as they pay taxes...perhaps even a disproportionate share in exchange? If indeed they are not really taking jobs that Americans would be doing.

Amnesty under any name is a none starter.

Once you bring up allowing any of the millions of illegals to stay you have lost any credibility.

Unless you can figure out a way to stop any further illegals, secure the border (really secure not the joke Napalotano is when she says it secure), end birthright citizenship, stop all daisy chaining but minor kids and spouses and do all of that BEFORE any amnesty would happen.

We've tried it the other way. Didn't work. The amnesty happened and the enforcement was not funded, was a joke, didn't end the many rewards for illegals or just simply wasn't even there. We've had 7 amnesties and the problem grows after each one.

What we have NEVER done is to remove the rewards.incentives for illegals. Just the start of doing this has had proven positive effects. So we don't need to grant amnesty to have them leave - they will go when there's nothing here for them.
10:49 PM on 07/26/2011
How much are you willing to spend to close the border? Remember it is an ongoing cost that only grows with time. What if they want to boat across by ocean? What about the cost of locating, arresting, and processing? Is that more rational than having them comein voluntarily and sign up to be citizens and obligated to contribute to the tax base? If they are productive contributors to society do you still oppose them?

Must be election time! Same old liberal appeals he made in 08 and then proceeded to forget about for three years. Now he need the liberal message again to appeal to Hispanic voter base. As they say in Texas, all hat and no cattle!!!

Tell me how the President thinks he's going to get the votes of all the Latino's on the immigration items, I thought in order to vote one had to be a legal citizen in our country? I know not all immigrants from all backgrounds are illegal, but darn it anyway they need to go through the proper channels to become a US citizen - just like all the rest of our ancestors had to do.

there's 2 reasons these particular immigrants of the last 10 years don't think they have to go thru the proper legal channels -
1.) America's ridiculous new "PC" mindset which makes us afraid we might offend somebody
2.) groups like La Raza that tell them they don't have to
04:41 PM on 07/26/2011
yes, I forgot about the old politically correct mode. But I'm not familiar with the La Raza.

Misty An illegal, or even a legal one can't vote, but it's been evidenced that they sometimes do anyhow, since all that is needed is a drivers license, and a SS card in most instances..
Now, the truth of the matter is that Obama, and the Dem's are working on the LEGAL Hispanic voters who might feel an ethnic, or racial obligation to stand with the poor cousin's from the South.
It worked back in 2008, but I believe many of them have become discouraged (as we all have) in his empty promises to us, be we.... white, black, or brown.
He hasn't helped ANYone except for his cronies, and to any who would disagree, I dare you to show me what, if anything.

wow, you must be against the facts. several polls have shown strong support for healthcare reform and now more americans support a 'balanced deal' than one that keeps billionaires' private jets tax free

may I suggest taking that chip off your shoulder and become more politically informed?
04:47 PM on 07/27/2011
Obama listened to ME and to a majority of Americans who WANT health care reform. STOP listening to the righty echo chamber. You are foooling yourself if you think that "most Americans" agree with you. As the reforms come into play, more and more Americans LIKE what they see and would not want to go back. Live with it.

Why ARE you guys SO...mean?
02:18 PM on 07/26/2011
The GOP solution to the immigration problem is to make the economy so bad here that we have to go to Mexico for jobs.
