House Republicans Take Aim At Environmental Regulations As Debt Crisis Looms

WASHINGTON -- With eight days until the country officially defaults on its debts, likely sparking a worldwide credit crisis, the House of Representatives is busy with legislation aimed at repealing environmental regulations and stymieing conservation efforts.

The Interior and Environmental Protection Agency spending bill for fiscal year 2012 contains policy riders added by panel Republicans to thwart White House-backed initiatives on everything from the EPA's regulation of greenhouse gas emissions to conservation efforts in the Grand Canyon. It would halt new regulations on mountaintop removal mining and prevent the Fish and Wildlife Service from listing new species under the Endangered Species Act.

Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee's Interior, said that one of the major underlying themes to this year's work is the sheer volume of regulatory actions being pursued by agencies in the absence of legislation and without clear congressional direction.

"My intense opposition to the EPA's efforts to control nearly every industry in this country is no secret," said Simpson in remarks on the House floor Monday. "The EPA's unrestrained effort to regulate greenhouse gases, and the pursuit of an overly aggressive regulatory agenda, are signs of an agency that has lost its bearing. Wherever I go, the biggest complaint I hear about the federal government is about how the EPA is creating economic uncertainty and killing jobs."

But members of the House of Representatives Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition say that Congress should be focused on preventing a default crisis and on creating jobs, not crafting policy riders to rollback essential pollution controls and public health protections.

"This is a low mark for the 112th Congress that has already seen the GOP majority preserve giveaways to Big Oil and advance legislation to overturn common sense energy efficiency standards, slash clean energy innovation, and carve loopholes in important environmental statutes," said a statement released Monday by the 48-member coalition.

"H.R. 2584 would overturn 40 years of bipartisan progress protecting the clean air and water on which all Americans depend, and the lands and wildlife that Americans treasure. The American people reject the false choice between a prosperous economy and a sustainable environment, which we've proven can go hand in hand."

The bill would allocate $9.86 billion in funds to the Department of Interior, a $715 million, or seven percent, cut from current levels. It would allocate $7.1 billion in funds for the EPA, a $1.5 billion cut from current funding levels.

The White House has threatened to use veto power to block the bill, arguing in a statement released Thursday that it "undermines core government functions, investments key to economic growth and job creation." Beyond the White House veto threat, the spending bill faces an uphill climb in the Democrat-controlled Senate, as well as plenty of resistance from Democrats in the House.

Dozens of Democratic lawmakers took to the House floor Monday afternoon to strike the last word. Among those who protested the bill were Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), Lois Capps (D-Calif.), Jay Inslee (D-Wash.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.), Jared Polis (D-Colo.), Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), Niki Tsongas (D-Mass.), Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), George Miller (D-Calif.), Joe Courtney (D-Conn.), Doris Matsui (D-Calif.), Jim Langevin (D-R.I.), Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), John Sarbanes (D-Md.), John Conyers (D-Mich.), Judy Chu (D-Calif.), David Cicilline (D-R.I.), Danny Davis (D-Ill.), Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.), Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-Texas) and Bobby Rush (D-Ill.).

"This is the most anti-environmental House of Representatives in history," said Rep. Henry Waxman, ranking member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. "The new Republican majority seems intent on restoring the robber baron era where there were no controls on pollution from power plants, oil refineries and factories ... A strong and vital EPA is in our national interest and the public interest. If we disarm EPA as this bill would do, there is no one to stand up to the big polluters."

Monetary gain is the driving force. A huge problem in this country is a poor education. This is a plan on the part of the elite to pave the way for raping earth & poisoning the general population of America for the profits of wall street. Its easier to sway the votes of a country of stupid people when they sing that the EPA is a job killer.The same people are pushing free trade to outsource US jobs, and more tax brakes for the rich. The under educated of this country, which is a large majority of the voters will listen. Not because they are on board with these lies, but because we live in a country that is not given all the facts or taught basic skills to make informed decisions. If we had higher education in the public sector people would know whats the real risk and real spin these people play time and time again. The top 2% have a huge stake in keeping the country uneducated and polluted. The only real level playing field is the internet. To keep people informed. How else would the knowledge about these companies make it to the general populations ears. Def not through the schools or the media. Funded by this powerful group. We are in dark times my friends. We may have to wait until this generation of politicians dies out. Only then we can hope the new generation will have a enviro friendly for the people attitude.

Republican-Tea Party = autocratic, irrational behavior.

Why isn't a solution being reached regarding raising the debt ceiling; because the Republicans are conjuring and channeling this non-sense into the debates.

Because we could all use just a little bit more hexavalent chromium in our drinking water, right GOP? The EPA wouldn't exist if companies could be trusted to do the right thing, instead of poisoning our environment to rake in more profits.

But never mind that. More birth defects and more cancer equals more profits, right?

Never mind the fact that we ALL need clean air and water to survive. Never mind that the Grand Canyon is an irreplaceable treasure. Never mind that mountain top removal coal mining is killing people. We need to strip these regulations so that the top 2% can keep raking in what little money is left in America.
Wake up Congress! You were NOT elected by the 2% richest. You were elected by the taxpayers, the "common man" who cannot stand up on our own to the polluters, who treasures a diverse and healthy environment. What happened to the conservative value of the 'sportsman' who defended the environment so he could have a place to hunt and fish? How will our farmers grow our foods if the soil is toxic? Do you think moving to Europe or some other rich-persons retreat would save you from global ecologic collapse? Do you think you'd be safe in DC or California? Or New York City? You are poisoning us all, INCLUDING yourselves! WAKE UP!

These GOP Trolls want to destroy this country one section at a time, by allowing oil and coal companies to run amuck without anyone telling them what they can and can’t do. History has shown us what happens when you let these companies operate without regulation and if we can’t learn from our mistakes then this country is doomed.

Well according to the repuds we "can't leave our children in debt" but we can leave them a burned out rock to live on. Of course they don't want regs, the kochroaches gave the repuds their marching orders and sure enough the lockstepping begins. The blackmail used by these vermin against the people is tantamount to treason. The repuds protect their masters at all costs, they don't care if the rest of us live on a poisoned planet, as long as their masters live on Mt Olympus. Just disgusting that we have people that just don't care.

The Republicans only goal is to put more money in their won pockets and the best way to do that is by putting more money into the pockets of the industries that bribe them to cut the environmental regulations. Environmental regulations create more jobs. They force companies to hire more staff to deal with the regulations. They don't reduce staff, because non compliance could mean losing market shares. It's easier to keep your shares than to gain more shares.

Off course you can also take the position that less environmental regulations leads to dirtier air, water, and food supply, thus more illness in the populace, and thus more jobs in the insurance and health care industries.

Since 2001, when Bush Jr and Cheyney took over with a Republican house and Senate,
the PILLAGING OF AMERICA AND AMERICANS CONTINUES!!
WELFARE FOR THE RICH;
SUBSIDIZING THE SEVERAL TAX-FREE MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR OIL COMPANIES;
CARVING OUT EXCEPTIONS TO THE CLEAN WATER ACT AND JUST FORGET ABOUT CLEAN AIR;
DOUBLING THE MILITARY BUDGET;
AND
TEN YEARS AGO WE HAD NO DEFICIT AND A TRILLION DOLLARS CASH ON HAND.
INSTEAD OF GIVING BACK TO THE COUNTRY THEY JUSTIFY RAPING AMERICA.
I DIDN'T REALIZE THEIR ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE THEY ARE ONE OF THESE 1%'ERS;
THERE MUST BE ALOT OF TRUST FUND BABIES OUT THERE.
