BP Reports $5.6B Quarterly Profit, Compared To $17.2B One Year Ago

First Posted: 07/26/11 10:24 AM ET Updated: 09/25/11 06:12 AM ET

LONDON (AP) -- BP PLC on Tuesday reported lower than expected earnings for the second quarter as it struggled to lift production in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Although the actual costs of the spill diminished, the fallout from the disaster continued to weigh on output, down 11 percent from pre-spill levels. The company said the damage to its reputation could have a long-lasting impact on its prospects.

BP reported a net profit of $5.6 billion for the three months ending June 30, compared with a loss of $17.2 billion a year earlier.

Replacement cost profit, a closely watched industry benchmark, was $5.3 billion compared with a loss of $17 billion a year earlier. The second quarter result was lower than the average analyst forecast of about $6 billion.

Last year's earnings were hit by a $32 billion charge for responding to the Gulf of Mexico crisis.

The lower-than-expected profit hit BP's shares. They were trading 2.5 percent lower at 463.45 pence ($7.58) as trading opened on the London Stock Exchange.

"In our opinion the key factor for investor sentiment is the long-term actions to restore the lost shareholder value," said Tony Shepard, analyst at Charles Stanley & Co. He said investors are waiting for an update on the company's strategy following the collapse of its Arctic exploration deal with Russia's Rosneft.

Richard Griffith, analyst at Evolution Securities, said BP's recovery was on track and affirmed a "buy" rating on the shares.

BP said it has so far paid $6.8 billion for economic and environmental restoration in the Gulf of Mexico, including $5.1 billion from a $20 billion trust fund to settle individual claims.

In the second quarter, payments from the trust fund totaled $2.1 billion, including $873 million to individual and business claimants.

The company said the majority of the cleanup on the U.S. Gulf coast was completed in the first three months of the year, while "limited" work continued on marshes and barrier islands. No further work is planned on the seabed, BP said.

The company acknowledged that "the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has damaged BP's reputation, which may have a long-term impact on the group's ability to access new opportunities, both in the U.S. and elsewhere."

In the short-term, the disaster has had a clear impact on BP's production levels.

During the second quarter, its oil and gas production was 3.43 million barrels of oil equivalent a day, down 11 percent from a year earlier, BP said that primarily reflected "the ongoing impacts to Gulf of Mexico production as a result of the suspension of drilling, and the continuing divestment program."

Full-year production is expected to remain close to that level, BP said.

Chief Executive Bob Dudley was upbeat about the company's prospects, saying he expects future cash flows to grow faster than output.

"We expect the momentum of our recovery to build into 2012 and 2013 as new projects come on stream, particularly in higher-margin areas; as we complete current turnaround activity; as we return to work in the Gulf of Mexico; and as uncertainties reduce," Dudley said.

Dudley added that 2011 had been "an unusually good year" for gaining access to resources, with new tracts awarded in Australia, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, the United Kingdom, the South China Sea and Trinidad.

Sad part in all this media hype, Do you really think that a crook is going to admit guilt! They Post their profits, and then tell you the sad story of what it cost them to cleaup their dirty deeds. But typically, the American people think they were punished for all the did (or, didn't do) , which caused such profit losses, then tell you of all the countries they are now pumping that 'Black Gold' from, since they can't go back to the Gulf......................and conclude that it has been an "Unusually Good Year," with only a 5.6 Billion dollar profit for the quarter! The America people were outraged by the spill, and restricted from further use of the default oil rig. So the raised the price of oil on the market, and took their 'ball' and told us to get Fu*&#$**$$d

So who lost.....................your Grand Children, and their's as well! Sorry I did go to Rocket Science school..............!!

LOL at all the typical Left-Wing hateful comments. I wonder how all the employees (not just fat cats) who work for BP, here in USA, feel about you?

And all the "damage" that was done ... LOL ... even you Left-Wing Audobon Society says the harm was like a cancer patient getting a sunburn ... in other words it was nothing.

The REAL harm was your President getting on TV every day and saying to stay away from Gulf ... HE DID THE DAMAGE TO THE ECONOMY DOWN THERE and that's why he finally had to go down for a photo op on the beach and say everything was clean.

You Left-Wingers are disturbing.

How do you feel about he thousands of bogus claims being made by Gulf Residents? I'm sure you don't care about that.

I'm sure you don't care that Obama still has yet to allow drilling to resume to even a fraction of pre-spill drilling ... now what do you think that's doing to the economy in the Gulf States who depend on drilling?

LEFT-Wing hatred!!!!!

Maybe they should have a really big yard sale, so Tony and the other poor CEO's could sell their yachts, fine art, mansion, etc. for some much needed cash.

Yet somehow 5.6 billion for 3 months work doesnt sound too bad to me....I know,Im crazy and 17 million for one quarter is way better but Im thinking BP can stay alive on 5.6 billion........LOL

And BP wonders why?

I don't know BP's per gallon gas prices are in your area. But where I live, BP is a minimum of 10 to 15 cents per gallon more then any other gas station in the area. The only time our BP station prices were lower per gallon, was during the big oil spill crisis when consumers were actually boycotting BP.

Really, why would anybody buy products from this avaricious, environmentally unfriendly company operating in American waters? I have never bought BP anyway, because I knew BP stands for British Petroleum. Why should I help them? Besides, their prices are always 3-5% higher than Phillips 66, which only uses Canadian and Mexican oil from outside the U.S.

The editor, and maybe the person who composed the headline for this story, should be reprimanded or terminated. It's a $5.6 billion gain versus a $17.2 LOSS !

This story just breaks my heart NOT. Maybe we should all send sympathy cards.

A spill implies a fixed amount formerly contained. Meaning that eventually the spill will end. This was a gusher.
