David Wu Resigns: Oregon Congressman Resigning Amid Sex Scandal Allegations (PHOTOS)

AP     First Posted: 07/26/11 01:17 PM ET   Updated: 09/25/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Democratic Rep. David Wu of Oregon announced Tuesday that he will resign amid political fallout from an 18-year-old woman's allegations she had an unwanted sexual encounter with him.

Within days of the allegation, Democratic leaders requested a House Ethics Committee investigation of his conduct. Wu had said Monday he would not seek re-election, but had come under increasing pressure to step down.

"The wellbeing of my children must come before anything else," Wu said in a statement. "With great sadness, I therefore intend to resign effective upon the resolution of the debt-ceiling crisis. This is the right decision for my family, the institution of the House, and my colleagues."

Wu is the second House Democrat in the last six weeks to be forced to resign as a result of a sex scandal. Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York resigned after sending lewd photos of himself through Twitter.

Scroll down for a slideshow of notable political sex scandals:

Wu, who separated from his wife more than a year ago, was first elected to Congress in 1998 as the first Chinese-American to serve in the House. He's maintained a centrist voting record but has been a leading voice on human rights abuses in China. He angered the high-tech firms in his district when he voted against normalizing trade relations with China.

Wu's hometown newspaper, the Oregonian, reported that a California woman had called Wu's office in Portland and reported an unwanted sexual encounter with him. The paper also reported that Wu told senior aides the sexual encounter was consensual.

The newspaper said the woman decided not to press charges because there were no witnesses and it would have been her word against Wu's.

Democratic primary challengers immediately called for Wu's resignation.

"It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be a United States Congressman," Wu said in his resignation announcement. "Rare is the nation in which an immigrant child can become a national political figure. I thank God and my parents for the privilege of being an American."

Wu went on to say that the resignation was the only correct decision to avoid distraction from the important work taking place in Washington.

Below is a roundup of notable political sex scandals in recent years:

I hate to be so blunt here, but if those guys in Washington would just simply keep their pants zipped and do the jobs they were elected to do, then we wouldn't have the embarrassment of the world seeing what idiots we have in our government..It seems every time you turn around someone in Washington has it out there for all the world to see..Get a life guys..Do your job..That's how you "make the world a better place", Mr. Wu.
If we, who actually work for a living, did not do our jobs, or if we were forever in a scandal, then we would no longer have a job to go to. Who do these people think they are, for heaven's sake. Decency and integrity are not diseases Washington..They are honorable traits that should be cherished..It's a thought and a good one at that!! 8-)

I think Pelosi needs to keep her mouth shut and stay out of this stuff.Hell,I could care less if a senator or congress person had an affair while being married. As log as it didn't interfere in them doing their job I could care less what they do in their personal lives.Pelosi has been bouncing back and forth with those trying to work out the economic deal right now.One day she's for this guy and his plan, next day she's for the other guy and his plan.I wouldn't trust her sorry a__ to take my laundry to the cleaners

Ok, don't know what the problem with him in a tiger suit is, apparently people just like to whine like baby girls about anything and everything. As far as the "unwanted" sexual advance goes it probably was consensual, but it shows such stupidity on his part that it's hard to feel sorry for him. Live and learn middle-aged men; when a young, attractive girl comes on to you it's not because you're hot, it's because she wants something (money, 15 minutes of fame), and that something might just come back to haunt you. Keep it in your pants, tiger.

Ya,it may not be right to cheat when you'r married but I personaly could care less what our lawmakers etc are doing with their personal lives.Having an affair has absolutely nothing to do with being a rep or a senator or a congress person. As long as their doing their jobs to the very best of their ability's to do so then i don't see what all the fuss is about.I myself have more imporatnt things on my mind concerning what our government employees and the people we elect are doing pertaining to their jobs than to give a damned about if their messing around on their wives or husbands. One has nothing to do with the other unless it becomes a problem with the performance of their jobs

Liberalism, anything goes, take no responsibility for your actions, when backed into a corner just lie, how very sad.

Gee, he resigned, while Ensign, Vitter and Craig, all Republicans, didn't.

So I guess the party of anything goes is Republican, based on the evidence.
01:00 PM on 07/27/2011
This is ANOTHER example of the people We have elected to Congress have become POWER CRAZED and think they can do and get away with ANYTHING.

They have become to think that the RULES are for the rest of us.

Why should they NOT think that, WE let them have ther own INSURANCE, LIFE LONG RETIREMENT (after just on term) and so many OTHER PERKS that the rest of us do not come close to getting!

Yeah, he should be replaced by a Republican. After all, they don't go after young girls. They're attentions seem to be directed toward young boys instead.

would be hard to believe that Ronald Reagan would do such a thing, but Bill Clinton well thats another story.
11:05 AM on 07/27/2011
No, no,no!! we don't want anymore of that. It's enough. Como on!!! before this 2011 is over, we already have two members of congress having to resign for similar misconducts. If the allegations are truth, I need to say that the majority of elected public officials are responsible people that might never get themselves in absurdities like this; but to take care and try to help resolve the nation's problems. I m not saying that this allegation a truth or false. I don't know. However, if this allegations are truth, people might see it as a great syllogism of an out of control political shamelessness in any public officials who become engaged in such behavior..

I don't get this. Is an unwanted sexual encounter rape? Did she say no and he "ran the red light" or did she change her mind afterwards? Did she wake up and and think, eeeeeewww, what did I do last night? Or perhaps this was a case of too much drinking with Mr. Wu which lead to a night of ugly sex that she wished had not happened?

What is the definition of her accusation and is she now intending to press some kind of charges? If not then I think Mr. Wu has been scammed. Amazing how even the mention of sex between two unmarried, non committed adults is enough to ruin a political career.

Does it matter? She was a teen, and he's an aging politician. Is there any good outcome to this? HE should have known better.
Get the FBI to investigate all of them. Get rid of the dopes in 2012.
Just look at him, he looks like Sulu from Star Trek. She was a teen at the time. Is his ego that big, that he thought she really thought he was cute?
12:12 PM on 07/27/2011
I hate to sound crass but 18 is legal for consent. Did it happen when she was underage? I missed that part of the story.. If not then I don't understand what the charge is? Will this go to trial? And dude, I don't think he looks like George Takei at all. Such a cheap shot.

If she was a underage teen at the time he has a big problem. Yeah it's a bit creepy but not illegal. Sending a picture of himself in a tiger suit..uhhh so what.

Wu told Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (Conn.) that he had “done nothing illegal” in his encounter with the girl, who was 18 at the time of the incident. He resigned so it's end of story but I would like a bit more detail on this. I find it all a slight bit odd.

This is too sad for words. These people are the face of our future. Is it too much to ask that our politicians act more mature than our children. If these people are a reflection of the best that Americans have to offer we are doomed. It must be really difficult to fix the country when the politicians we put in office are running around trying to cover up their bad behavior and still pretend to care about the American people. Why would they care about us when they don't even care about their families? I don't trust anyone who would violate their own family trust. What makes us think they will treat us better than the people they profess to love? The current administration and future administrations will be challenged with the constant deterioration of our values if we don't make politicians accountable. Is there a town square looking for an idiot?
10:45 AM on 07/27/2011
I am a Republican but I understand that there are good Democrats & bad Republicans & vise versa......I sometimes wonder if these women are sent to various members of congress to snare them....then if they cause trouble the info is released........not towing the party line?......well well...remember that consentual sex you had?.......well now she is claiming it wasn't......

dude, Huffpost can censor at will. The definition of freedom of speech is that you can say or write whatever you want in a public forum and not risk being jailed however Hu Po is a private concern thus they are granted the power to censor, edit or present in whatever fashion they see appropriate to their needs. Start a blog and write whatever you want- just don't threaten death or assassination- and you can be pretty sure no one representing a government agency will be knocking on your door.
