Hispanics Lost Two-Thirds Of Household Wealth In Recession: Study

Hispanics

Wealth disparities between white households and black and Hispanic households are greater than they’ve been in the past 25 years, a new study from the Pew Research Center has found.

The report, released Tuesday, shows that median wealth declined by 66 percent among Hispanic households between 2005 and 2009. For black households during the same time period, median wealth fell by 53 percent, while white households experienced a decline of only 16 percent.

The changes in median wealth over the four-year period measured mean that as of 2009, the average black household had only $5,677 in wealth -- that is, assets minus debts -- and the average Hispanic household had only $6,325. The average white household had $113,149 in wealth -- 18 times that of Hispanic households, and 20 times that of black households.

The Pew study is only the latest in a series of reports indicating that the recession took a greater economic toll on minorities than on whites. In 2009, the Center for American Progress examined the effects of the downturn on minority employment and earnings. They found that unemployment rates rose faster for blacks and Hispanics than for whites during 2008, and that median family income declined more for blacks and Hispanics than whites during the same time period.

A 2010 Congressional report found that the recession had hit especially hard in industries that employ a high percentage of Hispanics, like construction and manufacturing, and in parts of the country with large Hispanic communities, like California, Nevada and Florida.

That same year, a report from the National Urban League concluded that blacks and Hispanics were three times as likely as whites to live below the poverty line.

And earlier this month, the Associated Press reported that while overall unemployment has fallen slightly since the end of the recession in mid-2009, from 9.4 to 9.1 percent, unemployment among blacks has risen from 14.7 to 16.2 percent.

The Pew report suggests that the steep decline in household wealth among Hispanics, in particular, was largely due to the implosion of the housing market. The median level of home equity held by Hispanics was cut in half between 2005 and 2009, according to the report, and home ownership rates among Hispanics fell from 51 to 47 percent, a sharper drop than for blacks or whites.

The report also points out that home prices have fallen precipitously in states like California, Florida and Arizona, where a large number of Hispanics live. Studies have shown that Hispanics and blacks had disproportionately high rates of subprime mortgage borrowing during the housing bubble, and evidence suggests that some lenders were targeting minorities and steering them into higher-priced loans.

I live in an area where horse riding and racing is an economy.
My suggestion is to watch your garage!
Lots of them are being robbed.
Cars are being taken, tools and such!
We put in sensors and cameras because so many people have had their garages robbed.
Give you 3 guesses who is doing it?

A good portion of the wealth loss came in the fact that many of us bought new builds in new suburban developments and hit has been the hardest hit in housing value declines. Older neighborhoods have sustained the hit to values a bit better, since the homes tend to be more diverse and less subject to negative comps.

never "existed" in the first place... lesson in finance !

You can't both HAVE a house and HAVE the "wealth" that's associated with the higher value of the house. The "wealth" becomes liquid only when you CASH-IN the chips ("house").

If you're playing the "house" (pun intended) you have to know when to cash the chips - otherwise you might lose the plastic TO the house.

And, btw, "house" rules apply to both rep and dem presidents - both dem and rep players - all color players, all races, all religions ...

as they say, "good luck" !

Most wealth outside the upper 1% is tied to home values, i.e. equity. Typically, more whites have been able to carry wealth from generation to generation in the form of family assistance with downpayments and other purchase assistance, and you outright gifting of property. Due to discrimination and in some cases, lack of being here for a time, minorities have not been able to build that cumulative wealth transfer.

Oh-oh. Might the 'redistribution crowd' have another target to see to it that (ahem) 'social justice' is done? I can hear the Dems platform in 2012 shaping up. "If you are white and have more than one car, you're losing those extras. If you have a home with more than three bedrooms, those 'extra rooms will be given to those who don't look like you. If you have more than one home, guess what?..That's right, kiss it good bye. And all in the name of fairness..."

Here's a question: might these figures reflect the effect of the sub prime loans? It was overwhelmingly non-whites who were the supposed beneficiaries of the govt policies to facilitate lending for those who didn't qualify via the traditional, established criteria for determining loan risks. Did many of these people lose their homes because of the economic downturn, and their main asset was their home financed by the sub-primes?

Another backdoor plan to suppress votes in 2012. Remember its not necessarily how many people vote as it is how many DO NOT vote. This is a tactic often utilized by the Republican Party.

In my view, the American dream of striking it rich is merely a well-marketed fantasy that keeps the bottom 99.5% hoping for better and prevents social and political instability. The odds of getting into that top 0.5% are very slim and the door is kept firmly shut by those within it.

I distinctly remember Prez W Bush announcing the new fangled mortgage qualifiers that would "enable all people to realize the American dream of home ownership", he said, with that smirk on his face. I clearly remember it. Suddenly, so many people could qualify for home ownership....what he did was finagle another way for the fat cats to get fatter and richer by pulling a fast one on all of those people; then he set about crashing the economy and knew that American dream would not last.

You have an awful memory. Read Reckless Engangerment by a NY TImes Pulitizer Prize winning author.

Those no down, non qualified, variable rate programs are the brainchild of WJ Clinton and his operatives including now Governor Guomo.

From top to bottom it was a democrat operation.

Gotta go with nana4g on this one, as I remember those home ownership quotes from bush on several occasions. He pushed it as far as he could while he was in office.

And remember after 9/11 - go shopping.

Could it be that this is exactly what the Republicans want? To put the Hispanics and AA and other minorities back in their places? Marginalize all demographics, Seniors, Youth, who have all become to uppity and who now have too much voice, opportunity, et al.

No. Because once they start realizing the fruits of their labor, begin to make money and start paying taxes, they migrate quickly to the Republican party. It just part of growing up.

Hispanics are not going to be relegated to a plantation like some democrat controlled minorities. They want jobs and quality education. They realize they won't get either from democrats.
02:39 PM on 08/16/2011
I wish I were part of a democrat controlled minority, at least I wouldn’t feel like a middle class tool for having supported the Republican party of the greedy which is set up to keep a select few rich and make them richer.

Since so many republicans are rich, I thought republicans had the secret to becoming rich, that’s why I became a republican. Well they do have the secret….The secret is to let the middle class work and then take their money! They have no intention of letting the middle class get rich. And now that the economy is in the tank they won’t even pay their fair share of taxes! Make no mistake we middle class NON-minorities are serfs for the rich republicans. I hope everyone will look at the issues and stop voting by party like I do now.

I looked at the Pew study. It was not clear that they were talking median, (half way between the highest and the lowest values) or an arithmetical average, (the sum of all the values divided by the number of values summed).

I can't believe that the highest black household net worth is only 11345.00, or that the richest white person in the country has a net worth of $226,298.

I think they were talking arithmetic average rather than median.

Is there something wrong with the editors and the headline writers, or has Bill Gates suddenly lost all of his money?
