Cancer Survivor Signs With NFL Team

Mark Herzlich, a former All-American linebacker at Boston College and a recent cancer survivor, announced Tuesday morning via Twitter that he will sign with the New York Giants.

Herzlich, who NFL.com declared the top available undrafted free agent, was named the 2008 ACC defensive player of the year following his outstanding junior season. He was considered by many at the time to be a possible top 10 pick in the NFL draft, but all that came crashing down when he was diagnosed with bone cancer that May.

However, Herzlich was able to persevere and after sitting out the entire 2009 season to undergo treatment, he returned to the Eagles linebacker corps in 2010.

Now, after going undrafted in April, Herzlich will have to fight his way onto the Giants roster during a shortened pre-season. The task may be daunting, but if there's one thing Herzlich has, it's fight.
