Mick Jagger Birthday: The Rolling Stones Frontman Turns 68 (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 07/26/11 12:50 PM ET   Updated: 09/25/11 06:12 AM ET

Sir Mick Jagger, the legendary frontman for The Rolling Stones, turns 68 today, and despite what critics say, he's still doing what he does best--rocking out.

Much of the recent focus on The Stones has been on that more than 50-year-old public rift between Jagger and bandmate Keith Richards. But Jagger keeps rocking on--despite the critics who have been telling him for years that it's time to finally hang up the microphone. In true rockstar fashion, Jagger likes proving people--especially his critics--wrong.

Last year, Jagger recorded a new version of "Plundered My Soul" for the "Exile on Main St." re-release. Not to mention the album of his new supergroup, SuperHeavy, is coming out later this year.

Sir Mick was the poster-boy of seemingly endless energy when he was younger, but he's managed to maintain his work ethic and magnetic charisma throughout his more-than fifty-year career. Jagger's last tour with The Rolling Stones, 2005's "A Bigger Bang," was the second-highest grossing tour of all time, and the album was a critical success.

And over the years, Jagger's been a consent source of musical inspiration for popular and indie artists alike. Ke$ha sings about kicking her suitors "to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger," in her breakthrough hit, "Tik Tok." Meanwhile, Maroon 5's Adam Levine and pop-diva Christina Aguilera wish they had "Moves Like Jagger."

We're celebrating Mick's birthday with a look-back at some of his most memorable moments and career highlights. Take a look below.

Since Freddy Mercury died, Mick Jagger and David Bowie have had to carry the torch of thinly veiled homoeroticism for sexually confused men stuck in the 70s.

Search 'Mick Jagger David Bowie' on YouTube if you don't believe me. In the words of Peter Griffin - "that happened and we all let it happen."

"Much of the recent focus on The Stones has been on that more than 50-year-old public rift between Jagger and bandmate Keith Richards."

Public riff, perhaps. But it's absurd to characterize one of the most productive song writing and performing duos of all time a 50 year old rift. Yes, like all partners they have bickered and there is tension between them that is apparent when scrutinized. But, with a few short lived exceptions, they have been the core of an enormously successful and long lived creative project.

Hey, a little credit where credit's due, here. Smaller concert venues (and PBS specials designed to appeal to the older demographic) are littered with bands and artists doing exactly what you describe--making an easy buck playing their 40-year-old hits for longtime fans jonesing for a flashback to their youth. Mick and the Stones have continued creating new material right along, and while it breaks no new ground (as, say, Tom Waits's later work has done), it's decent, respectable stuff for the most part, and if it doesn't rise to the greatness of their early work, it's mainly because that early work was SO great, and SO iconic.

Wow - can Mick really be 68? Hats off to him lasting this long in a business that shortened the lives of many. One of the greatest frontmen of all time.
