Obama Fuel Economy Standards: President To Announce Changes On Friday

Fuel Economy

07/27/11 03:36 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama plans to announce new fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks for the model years 2017 through 2025 at an event Friday in Washington.

The administration has been in negotiations with automakers on boosting fuel economy.

Officials familiar with the talks told The Associated Press this week that recent changes to the standards for light trucks have reduced the proposal to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. The administration's proposed target for light trucks was 56.2 miles per gallon last month.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday this new round of standards will save consumers money at the pump, reduce oil consumption, cut pollution and create jobs.

In 2009, automakers agreed to raise fuel economy standards to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016.

Just another issue Mexico will sue us on or get a waiver. In the last 2 weeks NAFTA was invoked and Mexican trucks are now allowed to travel throughout the U.S. While they are suppoes to follow certain American safeyt safety standards, I predict they will say these are American emmission and fuel standars that did not exist when NAFTA was signed. If past history repeats, Our politicians will give them

An ambitious goal. We need an electric vehicle sales mandate as well.

I'm buying a hybrid. Right now it's between the Civic Hybrid and the Prius. I'd buy American but it's more likely the two I'm choosing have parts actually made in the USA.

If only the banks would lend...

It might help if BHO le' were to submit mileage standards that were actually achievable and cost effective.

Sure! Let's roll it all back to 8mpg and subsidize SUVs.

Or...we could set high goals and improve ourselves accordingly like we've done for our entire history.

You can double your fuel mileage overnight; car pool. I saved $100,000 over 28 years. I invested the money and the value tripled.

BY 2025 MOST CARS WILL BE ELECTRIC OR HYBRIDS!

Electric cars will have unlimited range due to revolutionary on-board recharging systems.

Hybrids will be fueled by water, perhaps with a tiny amount of powdered Nickel added.

Both will be mobile power plants, capable of selling electricity to local utilities when parked - and perhaps paying for themselves in the process.

See Moving Beyond Oil and E-Cat plus, at www.aesopinstitute.org to understand how and why.

And accelerating that transition can minimize a little known threat of multiple nuclear plant meltdowns, revitalize the economy, and generate jobs.

In the 1970s we had hybrids. We had electric vehicles. We had alternative fuel vehicles. We even had Gasohol (10% ethanol). Nothing but massive taxes on gasoline will get people to buy something different than they have now. Except maybe built-in GPSs that tell you where the speed traps are (they are an add on now).

We have never had cars that can sell power to utilities in large enough amounts that the vehicle might be viewed as an investment.

Imagine the impact on the auto industry and the economy.

And the real losers here are going to be the enthusiasts, who love the journey and not the destination, those who bleed 93 octane, those who love their Detroit muscle from a bygone era, Japanese tuners, and European hi-tech exotics.

And what will happen if we don't buy these new biegemobiles that are being shoved down our throats because the government thinks its best for us? Will the enthusiasts have to see their cars get crushed and replaced with a bus pass? It may sound extreme, but it could happen.

Leave us gearheads alone. That's all I'm asking.

These regs affect new cars, not old muscle. If gasoline was appropraitely priced in the US, we would already be on the road to great milage with outstanding performance.

New Corvettes, for instance, would drive circles around the '67 427 tri-power, but instead of 6 mpg, it gets 26 hwy.

That ios not the point - it is not up to them to ask for a change at all. This country was founded on small govt and the larger the govt the less freedoms and weatlth we have.

For example look at the decrease of freedoms and weatlh in the last few years.

Yes, that's how all goverment regulation works in this sort of country. Communist type governments would have the government doing the lifting too.
