Entire Massachusetts Congressional Delegation Appears In 'It Gets Better' Video -- Except Scott Brown

First Posted: 07/27/11 06:25 PM ET Updated: 09/26/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The Massachusetts congressional delegation has put together a new video for the "It Gets Better" project, reassuring LGBT youth who may be getting bullied that their lives will improve when they get older. But one of the state's most high-profile politicians, Republican Sen. Scott Brown, is notably absent from the video.

Of the 12 lawmakers who represent Massachusetts in the Senate and House of Representatives, Brown is the only one who does not appear.

A Democratic Hill staffer with knowledge of the project told The Huffington Post that Brown was invited to participate, but he declined.

"Scott Brown has a strong record at the state and federal level against bullying and believes that all people regardless of sexual orientation should be treated with dignity and respect," said Brown spokesman Colin Reed when asked whether the senator had been asked to appear in the video. "His main focus right now is on creating jobs and getting our economy back on track."

In the past, Massachusetts gay rights groups have been skeptical of Brown, the only Republican in the state's congressional delegation, pointing to anti-LGBT comments he has made in the past. He once said, for example, that the idea of two women having a child is "just not normal." In 2006, he was the only state senator to vote to uphold then-Gov. Mitt Romney's veto of a Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth. More recently, however, he broke with his party and voted in favor of repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

The It Gets Better project was started by sex columnist Dan Savage and his partner in September 2010, in response to the disturbing number of suicides by teenagers who said they were being bullied for being gay or perceived to be gay.

The Massachusetts lawmakers join a growing list of politicians, including President Obama and Vice President Biden, who have made videos for the project.

"I know you may feel that even the people you're closest to can't understand what you're going through," says Sen. John Kerry at the beginning of the video.

"But I can tell you -- you're not alone," Rep. Ed Markey continues.

The video ends with words from Rep. Barney Frank, one of the few openly gay members of Congress.

"It will get better. It will get better because you're helping it to become better, and this is going to be, in the end, the kind of world we all want to live in," Frank says.

Senator Scott Brown’s excuse is that he is always too busy “creating jobs” to donate the few seconds needed for a life-saving video.

But he published dozens of long videos since he was elected to Congress 1.5 years ago, all of them promoting his career, and none of them creating jobs. After 22,000 other legislators, executives, celebrities, and average people all found enough time over the last 10 months to donate very short videos, his excuse about always being too busy isn’t valid.

Brown’s real reason for refusing to reduce LGBT suicide is seen in his 2002 statement that two lesbians having a baby is “unusual and not normal,” his 2004 vote for a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, his 2006 vote against a state Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth, and his repeated refusals to ever meet with any LGBT journalists.

I work with young people every day (teacher) and I just want to say that this campaign is such a simple and good thing to do. When I was growing up, there was no You Tube (I know, I am ancient) or anyone publicly speaking out or offering support in this way. Thank you to Dan Savage and to everyone who has appeared in the videos. Keep it up. As Representative Frank said, "...this is going to be, in the end, the kind of world we all want to live in."

I know this is off topic, but in a way it is right on. The is now pretty hard evidence that Ohio votes WERE hacked in favor of Bush and the whistleblower involved is now conveniently dead. We are looking at a big election in 2012 and we BETTER have our ducks in a row. Read this and pass it around to everyone you know. We BETTER BE PREPARED: http://crooksandliars.com/karoli/new-evidence-vote-hacking-emerges-ohio-2004

Scott Brown isn't in this video because like any Republican, he hates gays, at least until we find out he has a gay lover.

"His main focus right now is on creating jobs and getting our economy back on track."

Right, that's how he found the time to author a bill forcing women to listen to ultrasounds, and wait 24 hours to get an abortion. Brown does seem to find the time for some "side focus" issues--when they involve oppressing women, that is.

I believe that the Republicans have proven time and time again that they belong to the Bully Party. That fact has never been more apparent than during the past few months. Why would Scott Brown go against his party's most cherished beliefs to help the "abnormal."

If you have to force someone to appear in a public service ad, what is the point? He shouldn't be in it at all. How may gay teens care about this clownn anyway?

Logical fallacy of false equivalency. With the repeal of DADT, Obama has already achieved more in two years than more than a decade of Republican governance refused to do. Meanwhile, former presidential candidate John McCain has backtracked on his own words about supporting repeal if the military came out in support.

Night and day's worth of difference.

No it's not! I give Obama credit for having the Balls to repeal DADT. See the difference if Mc Cain is wrong no harm but if Obama is wrong big difference. If the Bigots refuse to enlist because they won't serve with Gay's what happens. When Truman Integrated the Military he had the draft to back him up.  And don't misunderstand I realize that Gay men and women are just as capable in Battle I like McCain worry that the front line troops won't enlist.

So far, none of the Republicans in Washington has participated in the It Gets Better project. I found this interesting, and frankly, not surprising. Yeah, they are going to say, "I don't hate gay people," but probably will not be able to say, "Some of my best friends are gay"... Same way they will all quickly tell you, "I am not a racist"...

Maybe for Sen. Brown it doesn't get better. Maybe he's already had his moment in the sun. Even the Tea Party has turned on him. And next year Elizabeth Warren will take his seat in the Senate. So for him, it doesn't get better.

My gosh. I'm a gay guy. I have love and respect for everyone. Even those that condenm me. Hey, I'm not a saint...I go from a conversation about how excited that my deodorant brought back Irish Spring smell to pissed off lost truck driver. I was self esteem-less, body concious,I sold my soul to a Hollywood Ceo and the stupid gym...to pout next to cologne or shirtless in wrinkly clothes. I,a student from Emerson, Romper Room show biz beginning talent I didn't stand a chance because of "blond" and "nice teeth". I achived what I set out to do, TV series It was in my cruel Beverly Hills neighborhood that I found myself attracted to another guy. To really shatter my brain & not everything I put up my nostril including the 3pm bus...not endless Dewars Scotch for Scotch Balls...I was so afraid. He swore me to secrecy, his mom was a famous actress, I'd be blacklisted. Then "classic cases" Well, he swished more than mouthwash and I was heavy with the masculato becasue now, CRAP. I'm gay. I heard in church I was an abomination. I hear it today. Michele and Marcus Bachman pray away the gay songs (like Ethel Merman Disco) Fox News, Mike Huckabee. I'm older now. Am I safe yet? My partner and families? Thanks, Scott Brown. I would have jumped of the Tobin with your claims of sex crimes lies in your book. Anything for a vote Scott. Same old copout.

Scott Brown Declines To Appear In 'It Gets Better' Video.......... "His main focus right now is on creating jobs and getting our economy back on track."

What the H - ll has that got to do with taking a few minute to appear in a clip to help kids that are bullied in schools? The guy's a phony...that lame excuse of his doesn't fly unless of course you don't really care that they're bullied.

What he meant to say was that he is too busy driving market and consumer uncertainty by perpetuating a manufactured fiscal crisis.

When you add in his support of job-killing spending cuts, I can see where he is reluctant to tell anyone that it will get better.
