Tim Gunn: Hillary Clinton Is Confused About Her Gender (VIDEO)

Last night George Lopez hosted Tim Gunn on his show (who comes up with these pairings?) and asked him loads of questions about bad fashion. Playing his snarky part, the "Project Runway" host threw out a plethora of barbs aimed at victims both expected (e.g. Snooki) and unexpected, namely Hillary Clinton.

Lopez brings up her name, asking Gunn for his opinion on female politicians' style. After speaking at length on that fact that Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann are actually one person, Gunn launches into a diatribe against the Secretary of State for her beloved pantsuits.

The highlight:

"WHY must she dress that way? I think she's confused about her gender."

Audible gasp by the audience.

Lopez doesn't do much to help with his follow-up question:

"But how can someone hide cankles?"

Cue second audience gasp.

These men are as catty as a couple of Housewives (whose style they also deride). But it should come as no surprise: as an acid-tongued TV personality, Gunn has been singing the same tune for several years. He first dropped the line about Clinton's "gender confusion" on Conan O'Brien's show back in 2008.

No, he's confused. I work in a man's field. You cannot draw attention to yourself by dressing feminine. You need to be "believable." Yes, you have to look tougher than maybe you are. So pant suit keeps her with the boys and having a little bit of femininity. What does he know about a woman working in a man's field? Designers are completely different than scientists, engineers, politicians, etc.

who gives a rip what this guy (?) thinks. Hillary is tough and it doesn't matter if she has "gender issues". she's an authentic person, not like gunn.

I did not mean that to be a factual statement.

Hillary Clinton is an incredible woman and role model. Some women wear dresses. Some don't. It doesn't make a woman more or less a woman by what she chooses to wear.

Absolutely true.

Also true- Gunn's statements are undeniably funny.

As liberals, we've got to not take ourselves and our political devotions so seriously. I love Clinton, but her mannish style makes her a target. For the record, Clinton's reaction to such statements (or should I say lack of reaction) are precisely what I expect from politicians. She's more concerned with her duties as Sec of State to be worried about fashion.

Lastly, your statement "It doesn't make a woman more or less woman by what she chooses to wear" belies your subconscious belief that it does. Or at least a belief that women and men are not equal. Otherwise you would have said that what she wears doesn't make her any more or less qualified to to the job (or human).

Actually, I don't even know who these people are. I read it because of the remarks made about Hillary Clinton, our Secretary of State. Haven't read many articles commenting on former Secretaries of State and their fashion statements. Perhaps we should acknowledge there is a double standard and by ignoring the persistent psychological brainwashing we, as women are exposed to, we can begin to change the rules of a game we have been forced to play without ever having had a say on how it's played..

Tim Gunn is obviously saying this to draw attention to his image as a fashion opinion maker but I think that Mrs Hillary Clinton is dressing just fine.

I don't think a Ed Hardy pants, and shirt would be a better look .

Tim Gunn is welcome to his opinion, but I think she dresses just fine. Her mission in life isn't to be eye candy. I am of Hilary's age and I like wearing pants also. When I was younger I loved getting dressed up, but I think as one gets older we become less superficial and want to be more physically comfortable. Clinton has an important job with a lot of stress. She travels constantly and I'm sure is more worried about the world than pleasing Tim Gunn!

ALOT OF WOMEN WEAR SLACKS OR PANTSUITS. I don't think a fashion designer should be picking on any one unless asked to about how THEY dress unless its showing their bottom, which many do and/or their boobs. Some don't know how to dress, true, but there are those wear slacks for comfort. Hillary can dress how she wants. In her traveling so much pantsuits are appropriate but she dresses in skirts or dresses as well.
