Bruce Beresford-Redman Family Spokesman: 'US System Failed' Ex-'Survivor' Producer (EXCLUSIVE)

The family of Los Angeles reality television producer Bruce Beresford-Redman is preparing for a showdown with Mexican authorities who have accused him of killing his wife.

"It's ironic that Mr. Beresford-Redman will now have to seek justice in Mexico after the U.S. system failed," family spokesman Stephen Jaffe said in an exclusive email to The Huffington Post. "Unless he's treated fairly down there, few people will ever feel safe traveling to that country again."

On Wednesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Chooljian signed a 20-page extradition order to send Beresford-Redman to Mexico to face murder charges.

In making her ruling, Chooljian said she doubted Beresford-Redman's credibility. The judge also found there is sufficient evidence of probable cause that Beresford-Redman was involved in Monica Beresford-Redman's 2010 slaying.

Beresford-Redman, the 40-year-old former producer of the television shows "Survivor" and "Pimp My Ride," was arrested at his Los Angeles home in November 2010. He has maintained his innocence, but Mexican authorities say they have enough evidence to make a case against him on charges of aggravated homicide in the slaying of his wife.

On April 5, 2010, Monica Beresford-Redman, 41, disappeared from the Moon Palace resort in Cancun where she and her husband were staying. Her body was found three days later not far from the resort. Officials say she had been strangled.

According to allegations detailed in an 11-page criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court on behalf of the Mexican government, the couple had been having marital troubles for some time before Monica Beresford-Redman's death.

Chooljian made her decision to extradite Bruce Beresford-Redman on July 12. The order will now be sent on to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for her signature.

Beresford-Redman's attorney, Richard Hirsch, had urged Chooljian to reject the extradition, based on inconsistencies in the evidence. Federal prosecutors disagreed, saying there is overwhelming evidence against the producer.

"The evidence is supposed to demonstrate 'probable cause' which it clearly failed to show," Jaffe said. "It was disheartening to see a U.S. attorney doing the prosecutor's job in a U.S. court instead of fighting for the rights of an American citizen."

It could take up to one year for Beresford-Redman to exhaust all of his U.S. appeals. If ultimately convicted, he could face between 12 and 30 years in prison.

Homie killed his wife. It makes no difference where he rots.

NOT SO FAST homey. Thats what you said about Casey Anthony and she was found innocent by a jury of her peers. Mexico does not have a jury system only corrupted judges. Also I truly believe you are a reincarnated juror from the Salem witch trials. Tell me it ain't so. PLEASEEEEE

I love how Americans think we should be protected from facing trial in another country. While I'm sure our government doesn't want to see any of our citizens treated unfairly in another country's legal system, we don't just get a free ticket out of jail just because we're Americans.

The outrage of his family is inappropriate considering the overwhelming evidence the Mexican authorities have and his and his parents' behavior right after his wife's death. They would be better served by calming down and shutting up instead of all continuing that posturing.

Shoddy journalism. Who exactly is the "family" other than the suspect? The motherless children?

Nice try Sparky, most of us who travel to Mexico don't kill our wives down there... Too bad he picked Moon Palace to do his deed, it is a very nice resort. Never felt in any peril there at all.

People feel safe traveling to Mexico now? I don't think this particular case is what is going to make tourists avoid Mexico.

Feel safe every time I'm there, just got back and can't wait for my next trip in November. Never had an incident in my years of going there.

I don't get their argument, if they have evidence he commented the crime, then he must face those charges in Mexico. They same way if the countries were reversed. It seems to me that he wants the U.S. Judicial to save his butt.

And the moral of the story is...

If you don't want to live out your life in a Mexican prison, don't kill your spouse in Mexico.

Another thought, if we wish Mexico to cooperate with us when they have fugitives we want extradited, what choice do we have when even our federal prosecutors say they have the evidence to convict this man?
10:52 AM on 07/30/2011
Of course Redmond is angry about being extradited. He thought that an idiotic argument to an American judge, from a fellow American would clear up everything, since afterall he only killed a Mexican born wife. He feels entitled to our court protection if he decides to murder. Unfortunately, many sociopaths and psychotics in America believe exactly what he does.

I just got out of CANCUN PRISON.. I had a great lawyer and beat 2 felony's in the 6 days you have to prove your innocence. YOU ARE GUILTY IN MEXICO UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT. . There is no gringo section of that prison. You do not get anything in the prison YOU HAVE TO BUY IT. No blanket, pillow, tooth brush or even toilet paper. NOTHING except food and a shower. But you have to make friends in there to be protected and money buys friends. you are My lawyer is one of the best in Cancun. WRONG LAWYER and you are screwed. Its all about money and the right lawyer. I was charged with 2 felonies which I beat in 6 days because I HAD A GREAT LAWYER. . Even if you are innocent most people are screwed in the highly contemptible Mexican justice system. I will never go to Mexico again. I am an American citizen that has never been charged or convicted of any crime anywhere except Mexico. I love the Mexican people but there system is full of holes. My ADVICE FOR EVERYONE, stay out of Mexico. I had been there 20 times before. I got special treatment as I had money. I was in a separate part of the prison with a hitman, kidnapper, and a thief. They helped me alot. As did the attorney which I engaged by a small miracle. OTHERWISE I am in jail waiting for trial. For years.

Well, since you keep raving about how you were lucky because you could afford a great lawyer, if what you say is true, this guy shouldn't have much problem. He apparently has the bucks to afford a good lawyer. He better hope that lawyer can get around that "overwhelming" evidence the U.S. Attorney was talking about.
09:17 AM on 08/10/2011
The US Consular comes to me and gives me a sheet of 35 lawyers but tells me that he is not allowed to recommend anyone. So I pick one with my eyes shut. I call him and he comes and immediately wants $4000 dollars which in prison you have nothing unless its sent from the outside or USA. Since I don't have many friends with $4k I am stuck I can get to my visa card which my fiance has and she is in immigration detention BUT they did not search her thoroughly and she has my card. . The $4000 lawyer by that time dumps me. But he does bring me a change of clothes. A small t-shirt. Anyway I got hold of a 2nd lawyer and knew from other inmates he was the best. I told him I could not afford him and he said do not worry about it. He gets my card from my girl and I give him my pin number so off we go. He takes $1000 per day until the card stops giving money. He got $3k but he would have taken it all and left me with nothing. I get out after 7 days. Because of excessive withdrawals my bank stops the card. I call them and I get the card back online and I have money for my hotel while I wait for my fiance to get out of detention ( another story). MIRACLE IS THE WORD my card stopped.

I just got out of the Cancun prison where he will be staying until trial and this guy Bruce has some real surprises. The Mexican justice system is screwed up. YOU ARE GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT. A good attorney got me off for 2 felonies. You have 6 days to prove to the judge you are innocent, after that you wait until trial which could be 1-3 years in a prison that is very tough. If he has people feeding him money from the outside he can get special treatment. There is no separate area for gringos, that is a joke but everyone is bribeable. We got Dominos pizza delivered on day...money buys everything in there............... I know...

And again what did they accuse you of doing? What crime did you commit or not commit. Are you falsely accused or just sitting at your computer making this whole thing up?
10:43 AM on 08/01/2011
No reason to make it up. I came out the of deal innocent. I got an insight on the drug war there. The Mexicans blame USA for the drug war in Mexico. USA provides the buyers so it is all our fault their country is screwed up. This is 85% of them think.

Interesting note on the prison. It is run by the warden and guards. On the inside it is run by the criminals. Those are the ones you have to get respect from. Money brings respect. If you are guilty of rape or child molestation you will have a real bad time in prison there. BUT money buys almost everything there. He will have a long wait for a trial maybe up to 2 years. So he sits in prison doing nothing except staring at the walls and making "friend" that he needs to help him and who need help. If he is convincing he has it made as well as a little money. I suspect the insiders will demand a good sum for his protection. That the way it works there.

that a US Judge, would even begin to believe any thing comming from across that border is what escapes reason and common sense.
How can Justice Chooljian put any form of credibility in anyting comming from a land so infused with drug cartels, and drug use is just horrifically not oc clear and sound judgment.
and the Federal prosecutors? who are they trying to negoiate over, which of their own is sitting behind bars down there? gotta be something like that if they take that stand.
08:44 AM on 08/04/2011
So we should just take the word of a suspected murderer? Or maybe the word of the lawyer he is paying to defend him? I don't believe they would even consider sending him back unless there was enough evidence to warrant it. AMERICAN does not always equal INNOCENT!
08:05 AM on 07/30/2011

They're actually at 2nd world status. A middle class state. Economically they're doing better right now than we are.

Hey, if he didn't want to be in a Mexican prison, he shouldn't have killed his wife in Mexico.
