Madeleine McCann India 'Sighting' Under Investigation Despite Doubts

The ongoing search for Madeleine McCann took a potentially surprising twist this week after a young girl matching the missing youth's description was reportedly spotted in an Indian market.

As the Daily Mail is reporting, a British woman spotted a youngster "bearing a remarkable likeness to Madeleine" at a market in the northern Indian town of Leh, which is situated mostly in the Himalayas. Madeleine, who disappeared in 2007 just days before her fourth birthday while vacationing with her parents in Portugal, would now be eight years old.

Though the British woman is reported to have raised concerns with other tourists, including an American man who is said to have tried to take the girl from the couple with whom she was seen to be traveling, they were unsuccessful. The couple -- a French woman and her Belgian husband -- have insisted they are the girl's parents, according to the Mirror.

The McCann family's spokesman quickly played down the sighting, noting that while it was "no more credible" that previous leads, an investigation was underway. "Our private investigators have been aware of this report since the weekend and have been trying to establish the truth," Clarence Mitchell is quoted by Scotland's STV News as saying. "Unfortunately there is nothing that leads us to believe that this sighting is any more credible than any of the others we have received over the last four and a bit years."

A regional Indian police chief told CNN that he knew nothing about the sighting, and dismissed reports of a possible DNA test on the girl. "We have not recovered any girl from Leh," said Abdul Gani Mir, deputy inspector general of police for central Kashmir and Leh. "I checked and re-checked from my officers on ground in Leh and they have categorically told me they have not recovered the girl."

Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann -- who were, at one point, considered suspects in their daughter's disappearance -- have hoped to spark renewed interest in the case as of late. Kate's new book, titled "Madeleine," reportedly details the night of Madeleine's disappearance and the subsequent search.

all i can say is the government and FBI needs to do their dam job and bust the pedophile ring they think took her instead of sitting around and waiting and survellienceing them................how many more children have to be taken and trafficed for sex trades or human trafficing rings before our children in the world will be safe

May the little girl's soul rest in peace! The parents don't seem trustworthy, especially the mother! I hope we find out their involvement in her disappearence.

so why didn't those people just look the little girl straight in the face and have a good look at the eye? Madeleine will change as she gets older, but the eye will never change.

Although I myself would never leave my small children unattended, I do know it is quite common in Europe. Many parents park their prams outside of cafes with sleeping children and watch from inside. I have never believed it was the parents. Such a sad story. I wish they would find her alive and well. I just don't understand why parents would leave such small children unattended.

I couldn't agree with you more ibkatb! These kinds of things happen went the kids are not carefully watched! this also means going to the bathroom with your child or being properly supervised at the camp etc. or any event they attend! I know this to be true cause it almost happenend to my sister & myself when we waited to be picked up outside of the school we were attending.A man stopped his car & picked up my sister to put her in his car! Thanks goodness mom came around the corner ! The man jumped in his car & took off leaving my sister & myself alone again! This is a true story & had to write it so people will be more aware of this stuff going on! Thanks very much! If possible a response from you & others after you read my story!

This reminds me how of much I think in a few years we'll need to have baby lo-jack chips implanted at birth.

No girl found in India but the Mccans saw her picture and their private detectives and their PR are connected with india police who never hear about this???
SRINAGAR The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday denied media reports that a British girl who had reportedly gone missing in Portugal four years ago was found in Leh.
Abdul Gani Mir, deputy inspector-general of police (DIG), said: “We have not recovered any missing foreign girl from Leh. There is no question of carrying out a DNA test since we don’t have the girl. Our field staff in Leh have confirmed that no such girl has been recovered by them.

Thats a really bad situation. I feel so bad for that family and little girl.

Mostly for the little girl as the recent case in FL makes us untrustworthy of the parents

fishey dishy, the simple thing to do was to have the man follow the couple while the
the woman tryed to contact authorties one way or the other.. or simply if they really though
this was the girl, just follow her to their home or hotel, then contact the police..

you dont try to take a kid from someone whos claims they are the parents, you could
wind up dead if they are the real parents..

The parents left a small child in the room and went to have dinner? I put my money on the parents killing her.

I'm inclined to think someone at the hotel was watching this family.......wonder if someone simply knocked at the door......this child thought it was her parents......opened the door and was kidnapped......
