Religious Leaders Arrested At Capitol For Budget Protest (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/28/11 03:48 PM ET Updated: 09/27/11 06:12 AM ET

Update: Upon further investigation The Huffington Post has confirmed that Rabbi Arthur Waskow was arrested along with the rest of the group.

WASHINGTON -- Capitol Hill police arrested 11 people -- many of them members of the clergy -- protesting the Republican House budget-cutting plan, a police spokeswoman said.

The group, organized by Common Cause's president, the Rev. Bob Edgar, occupied the center of the historic Rotunda for more than a half hour Thursday, praying and singing until police closed the massive chamber and arrested the group, one by one.

Before officers closed the Rotunda, many visitors sang along, clapped, and filmed the prayers, although it was not clear that passersby understood what the group was protesting.

Common Cause spokeswoman Mary Boyle said they were trying to make a simple point.

"They were trying to send the message to Congress that the budget cannot be balanced on the backs of the poor, the middle class, or the neediest in society," Boyle said.

She said that Edgar only decided on the action recently, because it appeared likely some sort of legislation would soon come out of Congress that hurts the vulnerable.

A police spokeswoman said the clergy members were cooperative, and were charged with demonstrating in the United States Capitol. They were expected to be released in the afternoon.

“Congress is paralyzed by toxic partisan politics while people suffer,” said one of the protest organizers, the Rev. Michael Livingston, Past President of the National Council of the Churches of Christ (USA), in a statement.

“Our elected officials are protecting corporations and wealthy individuals while shredding the safety net for millions of the most vulnerable people in our nation and abroad. Our faith won't allow us to passively watch this travesty unfold. ... Today, we ‘offer our bodies as a living sacrifice’ to say to congress ‘Raise revenue, protect the vulnerable and those living in poverty.’”

The representatives said that if programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are cut or changed as part of spending reductions, responsibilities for assisting the poor and elderly would fall heavily on houses of worship, which they said are already strained for resources.

In addition to Livingston, those who were arrested included Jim Winkler, General Secretary of the General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church; the Rev. Jennifer Butler, Executive Director of Faith in Public Life; the Rev. Paul Sherry, Director of the Washington Office of Interfaith Worker Justice; the Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, Director of Public Witness in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.); Sandy Sorenson, Director of Washington Office of the United Church of Christ; Martin Shupack, Director of Advocacy of Church World Service; Jordan Blevins, Director of Peace Witness Ministries of the Church of the Brethren; and the Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, President of Common Cause.

Also on Thursday, 70 Catholic clergy, theologians and scholars from Ohio released a letter to Republican House Speaker John Boehner, who is from the state and is Catholic, encouraging him to not slash social programs.

"As one of the most powerful Catholics in Congress, you are now faced with a monumental choice. You can heed to the consistent moral calls from Catholics who have urged lawmakers to decrease our debt fairly and protect the most vulnerable or you can heed to growing political pressure from Tea Party Republicans," the letter read.

The letter follows a similar statement to lawmakers that was released Wednesday by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Also this week, religious groups ran radio ads in Ohio, Kentucky and Neveda with testimonies from pastors about the effect of debt ceiling negotiations on their communities and Sojourners, a liberal Christian network, released it's latest ad in Politico telling lawmakers that "God is watching" the debt ceiling and deficit reduction debate.

This article has been updated with reporting from the event.

Bigger question: why were they arrested to begin with? Isn't that an infringement of the first amendment? Or has that been amended to ensure we cannot gather without fear of arrest?

When I was a young adult, it was a sign of hope and advocacy, the sign of a true Christian, when we advocated and fought for the poor, the dispossessed, the needy. It gives me HOPE that religious figures are FINALLY standing up for the very people that Jesus sought to help.
It has taken way too long, however, and the voices are too few.

Oh, the anger when churches protest on behalf of the poor and hungry, but not a peep when churches threaten to excommunicate catholics for voting incorrectly, or when churches are threatened with IRS-style punishment for promoting peace over war. To be a rank and file christian in this country is to have contempt for the poor and derive pleasure from their suffering. When did religion become such a poisonous thing?

In the Republican teabagger version of America that so many are so quick to embrace, money is speech, but actual speech is terrorism. Carrying a gun to a Democratic event is a constitutional right, but carrying a peace sign to a Republican event is an arrestable offense. Complaints come only from blog commenters, never from Democratic politicians. (I'll never forgive John Kerry for tacitly endorsing the tazing of Mr. "don't taze me, bro." at a Kerry speech.) Their cowardice is boundless.

Preachers should stay out of politics.

Look, your job is to tell the people who choose to follow you what God wants. They pay you for that service, and the rest of us defend your right to make a living this way even though we think you're full of baloney.

You are NOT consultants to the government. You do NOT have a privileged voice in our legislative. You are NOT a lobbyist for your congregation. You do NOT speak for anyone but yourselves.

If you want to influence how our society functions, do that by DOING YOUR JOB - teaching your congregation. That's plenty of influence for one person, and if you're any good at it they will adopt your values and THEY will tell their elected representatives to honor them. Democratically.

When you individually go to Congress and put on circuses like this you're saying, "Ignore the voters, pay attention to me. I'm special. I'm God's voice." You're neither. Get over yourselves.

If it were up to me, I'd revoke the tax-exempt status of any church whose pastor engages in such political activity.

I wish this group of people were more organized. Maybe if they were the would have been more effective. Where were all the pro life protestors. Why didn't they band together with these people. It is a pro life issue here. How many people will die because of lack of food and good medical care,. I'm very proud of these people. We should have a National Day of Protest against the Government for wanting to balance the budget on the backs of the poor, hungry, weak, sick, disabled,& veteranes. Do we not have any pride? Where is the compassion for your neighbor? Where are our Unions who gathered in great numbers to protest for their Union Rights? Where are the Civil Right Organizations? Where is the Hispanic & Asian Community. I say we need to come together on Labor Day @ you State Capitals or Washington D.C. if you can afford it. Labor Day can be the day we all stand together to protest with this small group of people. They need not stand alone. We are all in this together. We need people to organize this great event. One Nation Under G-d With Liberty & Justice For all. This is who we are. My son is getting married that weekend, I'll stop @ my State Capital that day if I can. With one voice and million of people we can get our message out. Will You Stand With These People & Me?

I am so proud that a leader of my denomination was there. And, guess what, I am proud that a portion of my church giving goes to pay the salary for him and those like him so that he (they) can stand on principle in the rotunda of the Capitol.

My only wish is that I could have been there standing and praying with him.

We should revoke churches' tax exempt status if they're going to use tax-free donations to pay political lobbyists.

I want to correct myself. I ask you not to make this a Christian thing only. This is a story about humanity. There were Jews present also if you recall. That is why we need to make it a call for humaity. Jews are just as loving as Christians. We need every voice to stand up for this cause reguardless of religon. We have one G-d reguardless of your faith. We all aim to serve him,but I also believe we we are to serve one another also.We need people from all walks of life to fight for this cause.Let no barriors stand between us.

"We have one G-d reguardless (sic) of your faith"

We have zero gods, in fact. Please check your math, I suspect a rounding error. I think it happens when you average in polytheists like Hindus.

You sound just like an anti-abortionist. "This isn't about politics, we're defending those who can't speak for themselves."

It's a democracy. Just speak for yourself. Everyone else gets to speak for themselves.

Here we go down the rabbit hole again, with the protectors of the poor going to jail while the robbers of our nation's wealth glide untouched in the hallow halls of the rotunda. Shameless. What do you think Jesus is thinking?

If you would take some notice of the denominations listed (some religious organizations are also). They are United Methodist Church (of which I am a member and has a long history of social justice going back to being abolitionists and before), the United Church of Christ, the Presbyterian Church, Church of the Brethren.

All these churches you have never heard about in terms of wanting war or protesting at health clinics or any of those other kinds of things that are so harmful.

Instead, these churches believe in helping the poor and needy and in social justice causes throughout the world.

Learn more before you lump everybody together. is that not what prejudice is?
