Why '100% Orange Juice' Is Still Artificial

First Posted: 07/29/11 03:58 PM ET Updated: 09/28/11 06:12 AM ET

File this one under "things we always sort of knew, but wish we didn't." All that "100% orange juice, not from concentrate" stuff you've been drinking? Technically, it's "not from concentrate," but it's not really 100% orange juice either, a report at Civil Eats details.

The process is rather depressing. Gizmodo explains part of the process:

Once the juice is squeezed and stored in gigantic vats, they start removing oxygen. Why? Because removing oxygen from the juice allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling. But! Removing that oxygen also removes the natural flavors of oranges. Yeah, it's all backwards. So in order to have OJ actually taste like oranges, drink companies hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that make perfumes for Dior, to create these "flavor packs" to make juice taste like, well, juice again.

Any taste difference in say Minute Maid versus Tropicana is therefore due to the specific flavor pack the company uses. Since these flavor packs are made from orange byproducts, they don't have to be considered an ingredient, and therefore are not required to appear on food labels. This is despite the fact they are chemically altered.

Perhaps its time to take the juicer out of that dusty corner in the garage.

UPDATE: Karen Mathis, the Public Relations Director of the Florida Department of Citrus wrote HuffPost Food the following letter that offers the citrus industry's description of the process, without disputing any of the above:

Dear Ms. Polis,

On behalf of the Florida Department of Citrus, I am writing in response to the article on HuffPost Food, entitled "Why 100% Orange Juice is Still Artificial." Please allow me to share further information.

Purchased by nearly 70 percent of American households, people choose 100 percent orange juice for its great taste and nutrition benefits. Both "from concentrate" and "not from concentrate" orange juice are healthy options that provide a variety of nutrients. By utilizing state-of-the-art technology, Florida is able to provide a consistent supply of high quality, nutritious orange juice year round.

By law, 100 percent orange juice is made only from oranges. The basic principle of orange juice processing is similar to how you make orange juice at home. Oranges are washed and the juice is extracted by squeezing the oranges. Seeds and particles are strained out. Orange juice is pasteurized to ensure food safety.

During processing, natural components such as orange aroma, orange oil from the peel, and pulp may be separated from the orange juice. After the juice is pasteurized, these natural orange components may be added back to the orange juice for optimal flavor.

Please visit www.OrangeJuiceFacts.com for more information about orange juice.

Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to discuss in more detail. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Karen Mathis

Juice is not that good for you, anyway. Simple solution: want juice? buy fruit. squeeze. drink.

100% natural... at least as long as the fruit is.

so in other words, if you want the full benefits of the nuitrition in an orange... eat an orange, and skip the processed juice. this fact is so self-evident to me that sometimes i think im living in a blonde joke.

That is why they started making screwdrivers with grapefruit juice, OJ will kill you.

I think you guys are missing some points here. First of all, is being less perfect than fresh squeezed automatically bad and unhealthy? If the product is 90% are nutritious as home squeezed from fresh fruit, that's still pretty good, it's a lot better than Coca Cola. And if it's a lot cheaper and more convenient, so much the better. I don't see a problem with that. Also, if everyone only used fresh fruit and made their own, or just ate the oranges, then half or more of the oranges would rot in the dump. Many oranges are simply too low quality or too bad looking to sell, but they are still perfectly good for processing into concentrate or frozen, etc.

Well, if OJ going to kill me, so be it. It seems like everything is bad for you these days. I'll just stick to what I like and if ends me, I'll die happy.

So the PR person blathered on about health benefits and then admitted that they do add other stuff before selling it. And I'm betting that her definition of "natural ingredients" is very different from mine.

Anyone who wants a good look at the OJ industry should read 'Squeezed: What You Don't Know About Orange Juice' by Alissa Hamilton. It's eye-opening.

If you were concerned about health, you wouldn't be drinking flavored sugar water in the first place.

This is why I make my own orange juice by myself, everyday with real oranges... The taste is great.

Wow! I am really bummed out now. So much for thinking this was better for my kid heath wise. Well I guess I'll break out the juicer. And with the price of fresh oranges it will now be a weekends only treat!

just buy organic orange juice (in a glass container). Thats what we do.
12:02 AM on 08/26/2011
Or buy fruit and squeeze it. Organic orange juice must be outrageously expensive. And air and light will affect the flavor.

Nothing better than real Florida OJ...Not from concentrate, with lots of pulp. Just my opinion.

Totally agree. I don't just look for "100% OJ" or "Not From Concentrate" on the label......I look for "100% Florida Oranges" as well.

Only problem is that your real FL OJ is kept in a tank and loaded with artificial flavors before it gets to you. Myself, I'd rather squeeze it myself and have the original flavors.

I wasn't the first to say it, but it's true -- if it comes in a bag or a box or a carton, IT AIN'T FOOD! It is a national disgrace that in America it costs double or more to buy real food -- living, enzyme filled fresh fruits and vegetables -- than it does to buy processed, nutritionally dead (albeit tasty) food like substances.

The 60% of Americans who are grossly overweight aren't lazy slugs. They are the victim of their food choices. THEN they become lazy slugs.

That is why I just buy the fruit!
08:57 AM on 08/01/2011
Don't drink juice.... You get all the sugar and little fiber. Eat the whole fruit.... The juice is nature's way of getting people to desire the fruit so that they will consume the fiber. Squeeze out the juice and your messing up the whole system. If your thirsty, drink water.

This article is blatantly incorrect. I am a consulting professional engineer with about 30 years of experience in the citrus industry. If the orange juice is produced in Florida there can be no additives to the juice if it states 100% juice. Oxygen is not removed from orange juice, period. Not from Concentrate juice is extracted and stored in its pure form. The storage tank farms are kept at low temperatures with a blanket of nitrogen in the tanks to prevent degradation. The nitrogen is totally inert and testing has shown that the nitrogen doesn't affect or alter or get into the juice. Orange Juice in other nations, China for example, is a sythesized product. Orange juice in Europe allows pulp wash to be added. Bottom line, if it isn't made in Florida, it may not be pure. Currently, all NFC juice available in the USA is produced in the USA. Blended juice may contain foreign, mostly Brazilian, concentrate. The major American producers blend back essence and pulp removed from the juice by the process, but this just brings it back to match natural juice. Again, that is only with juice that isn't NFC. Blended products are 100% real juice. Synthesized products are cheap fakes.

I would certainly prefer to believe your information. It is difficult to know these days where the information in articles in the press comes from and what agenda is behind the report. Also, when health "experts" announce something is bad for you one year, and good for you the next, it leaves us all with trust issues on all official pronouncements.

I think I am going to need therapy. I don't know who is correct or what is correct or why it is correct I cannot even understand the corrections anymore.

Please, someone save me! But for now, I am going with the whole orange and eliminating Tropicana from my shopping experience.
