Brandon Marshall Reveals He Has Borderline Personality Disorder

First Posted: 07/31/11 07:30 PM ET Updated: 09/30/11 06:12 AM ET

Brandon Marshall revealed on Sunday that he was diagnosed earlier this year with borderline personality disorder in an emotional press conference.

Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported on Saturday that the 27-year-old underwent "three months of treatment and therapy, psychological and neurological exams at Boston's McLean Hospital."

"For so long, I've been just trying to get help. I've been seeking help," Marshall said, per the Associated Press. "I've been talking with doctors since I've been in the NFL. No one has ever helped me. So I was praying there was a treatment out there for what I suffered from and there was."

According to the National Institute of Health, BPD is a "serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior."

He also talked about being vulnerable and how he will be the face of BPD.

Marshall was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife earlier this year, which resulted in him being hospitalized with stab wounds.

Michi Nogami-Marshall was arrested and charged with domestic battery, but the Dolphins receiver claimed that his wife did not stab her.

The charges were dropped on Friday.

It's tough to admit mental deficiencies...

... good job Brandon.

Good for him. He recognized he was having issues, and sought help.

Brandon is a brave man to announce this. I commend him for bringing this out and talking about it.

All the best to him and his family.

Dang this description fits about half or more Americans "pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior". But I gotta tell ya the recent commercials about Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD)...really made me laugh. Of course they gotta drug for that...only problem is the side effects are worse than the friggin problem...you may die. Hello, how about taking a day job instead? Problem solved!!

Hello? BPD is extremely difficult to treat, and there are no "drugs for that." DO a little research on the topic and pray you or anyone you love doesn't become diagnosed with a mental illness, seeing as how you're so overwhelmingly sympathetic.

Good on him. Among all emotion disorders, people with BPD seem least able to admit to having a problem. Instead they just blame everyone and everything around them.

Even harder to treat.

Good on him indeed.

Mental health professionals characterize BPD patients as extremely manipulative. They often lie. If he did lie, would it only serve to confirm the diagnosis?

Good for you Brandon, take care of yourself.

Admitting he has a problem and going public about it can only serve as a step in the right direction for him.. I hope he gets all the help he can. It takes a brave man to admit to a mental disorder, and especially a high profile athelete whose every move is dissected in the press. Hopefully his admission will help others who suffer silently from mental disorders.

Can you imagine someone suffering from organ failure refusing to admit the need for help, or to seek medical treatment? Of course not. Unfortunately we forget that the brain IS an organ. Until this country becomes more scientifically literate, many people will suffer needlessly from mental illness because they feel it is something "to overcome."

The brain is the least understood organ of the human body. There is much that even the most "scientifically literate" among us don't know about the brain. It is definitely not as simple as you make it out to be. Unlike any other organ, the brain evaluates the need for help. Therefore, it's not hard to understand why a malfunctioning brain might come the wrong conclusion regarding it's own ability to function.

I certainly see your point. Cognitive problems are part of the reason that people are unable to see that they have cognitive problems. However, you must admit that the social stigma involved is still an unnecessary impediment to the whole issue. There are still undoubtedly many people that despite their illness would still have been able to seek medical treatment if not for social pressures.

I am happy to see a high profile celebrity drawing some needed attention to BPD, however, that said - this is not good news for him or for anyone else in his life. As far as I am aware there is no cure for this disorder - merely diagnosis. It is a "perceptual" disorder resulting in a broad range of abberant behaviors. The majority of BPD individuals are never diagnosed or treated because part of the disorder is that you don't trust other people. A professional therapist told me that other psychiatric professionals often have to be treated themselves during interaction with BPD patients because the patients can cause the doctor to question their own mental stability. The condition is often caused by an early childhood trauma or rejection which is why it is often diagosed in criminals, foster children and other neglectred and abused individuals. This family will need prayers, counseling and emotional support.

I think it is in a sense analogous to diabetes in that it cannot be cured either, but it can be managed and life can go on somewhat normally.

Serious problem. Good for him for pursuing an answer and that certainly explains some behavior. Working and living with him though ... wow.
