Actors In Bands: Movie Stars Who Rock (VIDEOS)

As Justin Timberlake continues what is now a legitimate, mainstream movie career, he seems less a musician who acts than an actor who also sings. But while he's gone from tunes to film, plenty of other stars have gone the other way, migrating from movie star to rock star (with varying degrees of success).

It should be less surprising to find out that your favorite film actor also plays guitar, sings or tickles the ivories; after all, it's just another aspect of creativity, and besides, isn't musical theater a combination of the two? In any case, here is a list of some of the top actor/musicians in rock -- solo singing careers not included.

Totally surprised by Jada Pinkett Smith. That was wicked! So unusual to not only see women in good metal bands, but African American at that. Most popular metal in America is overwhelmingly white and male and too many people assume that anyone else must be doing R&B, Rap, Latin, etc.

Thanks for breaking the mold, Jada. Keep rockin'.

I'll second a nod to banjo playing Steve Martin - he's great.
Musician first, actor second Huey Lewis could be mentioned. He hasn't done a ton of acting, but I've liked what I've seen.

I love The Bacon Brothers! Kevin and Michael are both great songwriters and their music ranges from moving slow songs to upbeat rockers. The band is full of talented musicians, too. I love the video you posted. It was one the sold as a fundraiser for the Mummers parade. I went to the concert in Philly and saw them do this live. It was amazing! They are on Facebook (www.facebook.com/thebaconbrothers) and there are more videos on YouTube. They are touring this fall. If you get the chance to see them, go! They put on a great show!

Yeah, he has a new album out with the band "The Steep Canyon Rangers." They are Blue Grass, which is not my kind of music, but from what I heard it's pretty good. Steve is awesome on the banjo...which of course he used a lot in his early comedy gigs. They should have included him on this list!

I love Zooey's video - ridiculously corny, but very fun!!! It is true Zooey in her unique form.

At the other end of the spectrum, though . . . is the embarrassingly bad, as in painful to watch Zada Pinkette Smith with her attempt at a heavy metal act on Jay Leno. How sad . . . she looks good, and does have some real acting talent, but her thing as a "metal maiven"??? No . . . sorry
