Angelina Jolie Honored At Sarajevo Film Festival For Work With Refugees (VIDEO)

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (Associated Press) -- Angelina Jolie attended the closing ceremony of the eight-day Sarajevo Film Festival in Bosnia's capital Saturday and organizers presented her with a special award for bringing attention to refugees from the country's 1992-95 war.

The award, called "The Heart of Sarajevo," was handed to Jolie by festival director, Miro Purivatra, who said it was being given to her not only for her great impact in the movie industry, but also "for persisting in her active engagement in the complexities in the real world we live in."

Jolie visited Bosnia several times last year as UNHCR ambassador and drew attention to the plight of 117,000 people who haven't able to return to their homes even though the Bosnia war ended 16 years ago. Accompanied by Brad Pitt, she visited several refugee camps. The visit resulted in a U.S. government donation that provided housing for the last 15 people living in one of the rundown facilities.

"I told Brad in the car I was afraid I was going to cry," she said with tears in her eyes as the audience gave her a standing ovation at the Sarajevo National Theater.

Jolie said she experienced the "warmth and hospitality" of the city during her visits and was honored to receive the award – a silver heart she took out of the box and pressed against her chest.

"There is no greater example of the strength of artists than a festival that begun during the war and grows stronger every year. I find it remarkable," she said.

Jolie and Pitt later watched a film about refugees by Oscar-winning Bosnian director Danis Tanovic.

The Sarajevo Film Festival started in 1994 in the besieged city, as its founders tried to offer citizens some sense of normal life. Residents braved mortar shells raining on the city to gather in a downtown basement and watch Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction," sometimes unsure whether the sounds of shooting came from the soundtrack or battles outside.

The next year, filmmakers shipped boxes of videotapes to Sarajevo along with food deliveries. Now, thousands from the region flock to Sarajevo every year to spend several days watching movies in more than 10 locations, and nights partying at concerts and other after-screening events.

Last year, Jolie shot some of the scenes of her first movie as director – a love story between a Serb man and Bosnian Muslim woman who fall in love and get separated during the war – in Bosnia. The film, "In the Land of Blood and Honey," will be released in December and casts local actors.

"In my career, I have never worked with such disciplined and talented artists," she said.

The project was overshadowed for a while by rumors that her movie featured a rape victim who falls in love with her assailant. This angered The Association of Women Victims of War, made of Bosnian wartime rape victims. They protested the production, claiming they were insulted by such a story line.

Mass rape was a taboo topic in the immediate aftermath of the country's 1992-95 war between Serb and Bosnian Muslim forces, but since then victims have formed a group to campaign for their rights, which has become one of the country's most powerful lobbies.

Jolie's filming permit was even briefly withdrawn but given back when her producers proved the rumor was not true and the entire Bosnian art community voiced support for her.

This year's festival hosted among others German director Wim Wenders and actress Charlotte Rampling. Over eight days, about 100,000 viewers watched over 200 films from dozens of countries.

Promoted in part by the festival, Bosnia is experiencing a film boom, despite its poverty. The country's filmmakers have won prestigious awards, including a foreign-film Oscar for Danis Tanovic's "No Man's Land" in 2002 and the Berlin Film Festival's Golden Bear for Jasmila Zbanic's "Grbavica" in 2006.

The festival has hosted stars such as Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman, Michael Moore, Daniel Craig and Mickey Rourke.

Say James Braddock who has the opportunity to get his name in the papers and cause a stir until his claim is dismissed.

Did Angelina Jolie use (steal) this book (The Soul Shattering in English) written by the Bosnian-Croatian author James J. Braddock a.k.a Josip J. Knežević, as the story platform for her movie In The Land of Blood and Honey?

Did she totally miss the truth and core of that genocidal war against Bosnia and her people? Why was she banned from filming in Bosnia by the most influental organization of women - victims of the war?

Did she rewrite history and offended thousands of women and other innocent victims of the Serbian aggression on Bosnia & Herzegovina? Should American women and human rights organizations get involved?
J.J. Braddock (a.k.a. Josip Knezevic) wrote the book “Slamanje duše“(“The Soul Shattering“ in English, or semantically more precisly: „The Shattering of a Soul“). The book is entirely based on facts and actually is a tribute to the Bosnian tragedy. The book is a tribute to all the women (and girls) of Bosnia & Hercegovina, who were subjected to the inhumane, intended, organized and perpetual abuse and rape – an important part of the policy of „ethnic cleansing“ designed by the Serbian

Hmm.. or is someone just out to piggy back ride on a more famous name? How would Jolie have read this obscure book? You think meeting with refugees for over 10 years from all over the world would not have influenced her story as much as an unheard of novel by an obscure author? Did you not hear that the filming permit was pulled over a false rumor of what the story was about and immediately reinstated once the Culture minister Gavrilo Grahovac had read the script and verified that the rumors were false? Did she rewrite history?/ I think once you see the movie you will know the answer. Did Life is Beautiful rewrite the history of Nazi concentration camps? No. Did you know that most movies are the same basic concept story told over and over and over again with just slight fluctuations in the details? Should American women and human rights organizations get involved..? With a fictional story with a real war as the back drop before anyone has even seen the film?? No.

But by all means continue to pimp your version of how she came up with story. Make sure to get your name broadcast everywhere with unfounded accusations and innuendo and purchase your pound of flesh. Who is to rob you of the long standing tradition of meaningless lawsuit actions and attempting to stand on the shoulders of more famous people to tell your own tale.

Sorry I don't care who gives her "fake" awards and how many trips she takes in a private jet to sit amongst the refugess. She's unhealthy looking and a bit of a liar. She and Brad gave $8million, yea right, check out how they move money around and always creating things to make money instead of giving from their own pockets. They have six kids and live like Queens and Kings there is no way they give money away. Have you seen Angelina films lately? Yeah she needs to slow down as she said because the offer of good roles are going to stop. And then lets see if she is still the great mother humanitarian. So sick of them.

I'm tired of hearing people say that actors are do-nothing narcissists.

"...
In 2003, Jolie was the first recipient of the newly created Citizen of the World Award given out by the United Nations Correspondents Association to those who have made a significant contribution. It was initiated in 2003, in honor of Brazilian diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who was killed in the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Iraq. In 2005, Jolie was awarded the Global Humanitarian Award by the United Nations Association of the USA for her work with UNHCR and with refugees. That same year, Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni awarded Jolie Cambodian citizenship for her conservation work in the country.

According to tax records, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt donated more than $8 million to charity in 2006 alone.

that's right! and before she and Brad got together and had six kids, Angie used to donate 1/3 or her salary of every film to charitable causes. Most people don't know that because, contrary to snarky comments, she does not advertise or exploit her good works. She talked about it during an interview with Anderson Cooper a few years back ... and only when she was asked about it ~ she never volunteered the information.

Whatever Angie's reasons, she is doing a good thing. However, I do believe she has another agenda. The other agenda would be all the good PR she gets from being the good humanitarian. Before everyone thought she was just a screwed up, drugged up mess.

She needs to start taking better care of herself. She hasn't been looking too well lately. Skin and bones, big veins down her arms and forehead! Yuk. Jen is looking way better these days! Guess that is the best revenge!

It is the right-winged backed media that attack people such as Angelina, Brad, George and Matt and do so to weaken their popularity and influence because they disagree with their evil agenda. They are worried because they know their supporters are easily manipulated and they want to be THE MANIPULATORS, release date late 2012. They will tell any lie they can think of keep their support.
