Doug Lamborn, Colorado Congressman, Refers To Obama Dealings As Being Stuck To A ‘Tar Baby' (LATEST UPDATES)

Doug Lamborn Tar Baby

First Posted: 08/01/11 05:23 PM ET Updated: 10/01/11 06:12 AM ET

Congressman Doug Lamborn, U.S. Representative for Colorado, was recently on the 630 KHOW Capils and Silverman radio show discussing President Obama, the President’s economic policies, and the debt ceiling deals being debated. Lamborn used a controversial phrase to describe working with the President:

Even if some people say, ‘Well the Republicans should have done this or they should have done that,’ they will hold the President responsible. Now, I don’t even want to have to be associated with him. It’s like touching a tar baby and you get it, you’re stuck, and you’re a part of the problem now and you can’t get away. I don’t want that to happen to us, but if it does or not, he’ll still get, properly so, the blame because his policies for four years will have failed the American people.

UPDATE:

Late Monday, Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) sent a personal letter to President Barack Obama apologizing for his use of the phrase "tar baby," a controversial term that has a derogatory connotation towards African-Americans. According to Lamborn's website, he claims that he was attempting to verbalize his opinion that the President's economic policies "have created a quagmire for the nation and are responsible for the dismal economic conditions our country faces." Lamborn goes on to say that he "regrets that he chose the phrase "tar baby," rather than the word "quagmire."

In a statement to The Denver Post, Lamborn had this to say:

I absolutely intended no offense, and if this is at all on his radar screen, I am sure that he will not take offense and he'll be happy to accept my apology because he is a man of character.

Lamborn may have apologized to the President, but the fallout from making such a controversial statement may take longer to damage control. Reaction to Lamborn's statement was widespread.

Fox31 reports that David Sirota, AM760 radio host said this in response to Lamborn's "tar baby" remark:

The fact that a sitting member of the United States Congress would take to the airwaves to use such a racially derogatory term to describe the first African-American president in American history is disgusting.

Rosemary Harris Lytle, president of the Colorado Springs chapter of the NAACP, had strong words for Lamborn as well, touching on the painful stereotypical views of the Colorado Springs area that Lamborn's comments exacerbate when she spoke to the Colorado Springs Gazette:

The world already views [El Paso County] as ultra conservative, ultra right wing, Tea-Party-loving, gay bashing, an epicenter of hate. With two vitriolic words, our own Congressman again sealed our fate.

The White House has not made any comment about Lamborn's statement or apology.

EARLIER:

The term "tar baby," with origins that stretch back to an 1881 Uncle Remus story from writer Joel Chandler Harris, can be used to imply that a situation is difficult to solve. But in more recent history, the term has developed more derogatory connotations related to describing African Americans.

In 2006, TIME magazine discussed the usage of the term "tar baby" when Mitt Romney issued an apology for his use of the term -- Romney claimed he merely wanted to describe “a sticky situation.” However, Oxford American Dictionary Editor-in-Chief Erin McKean told TIME that “what’s really important is not etymologically what it means, but the effect it has.” McKean noted that Oxford American would note that "tar baby" can have derogatory connotations in newer editions.

ColoradoPols points out that although the exact meaning of the word can be debated, most politicians would be smart to avoid the term as it can clearly be interpreted as highly “racially insensitive.”

In 2010, the National Journal ranked Doug Lamborn the “most conservative” member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Lamborn has voted to the right of 96 percent of his colleagues on economic issues, 93 percent on social issues, and 76 percent on foreign policy issues, according to The Huffington Post.

Lamborn was downright thrilled by the ranking. In an interview with the Colorado Springs Gazette, he said:

I’ve been called a lot of things over the years while serving in public office, but to be called the most conservative member of Congress is a distinct honor.

Obama has had two and a half years to go on the offensive against such people. He has chosen to let the lowest common denominator of DC and America insult him , while he just takes it and pretends to be above it all. Why?
I  think he accepts his role as the token who is accepted by the Big Boys for slapping his base around. So Obama gets slapped , then compensates by giving a slap to "the  Read More...

Tarbaby!!! REALLY ???? Didn't think it would be offensive?? If that's true (which I doubt) that's Hellishly scarey to think that someone so icredibly dense is in a position to make laws and create policies. I urge all concerned Americans to call opon the Ethics Comittee to take action reguarding this matter..

Personally I think it's tme out for all of the so called slips of the tongue and I really didn't mean it like it sounded remarks, by these Stick your foot in your mouths parties or what ever you want to call a bunch of grow ups going around calling names using words that they have to know are hurtful to others, We teach the children in preschool not to disrespect others, not to say words to others that may hurt them, not to try and bully others. how in this world can we teach children not to do those types of things if they see and hear them from people on tv that they think are specisl just because they are on television and have a important title. They are going to think it's ok to say and do hurtful things to others. Don't you think it's time to realize that everybody is the same on the inside. Stop all of this suit and tie racism, It would better to - get real and pull out the hoods and capes.

Doug Lamborn is now censoring the comments people make on his FaceBook page. I feel as if he or his office knows that his racist comments were unacceptable. If you respond intelligently to his supporters they delete your remark. If Mr. Lamborn would have used the word to describe a situation and not a person than it would not be considered racist in my eyes. Because he used the term to describe a PERSON that's when it is an insult. I also remarked on his page about SUBCONSCIOUS RACISM - it affects everyone not just black and white - Joe Feagin, professor of sociology at Texas A&M, said the United States is physically diversified but still subconsciously unwilling to mentally accept racial equality. Mr Lamborns comment was insensitive. In all cases of harassment it is not the INTENT of the speaker, but rather the IMPACT that it has on the listeners that determines harassment. This is the case here. I was personally offended. To those who would like to say my feelings are not substantiated; WHO R U to tell me and others how we SHOULD feel. I have shared my thoughts with people and that's all I can do. Mr. Lamborn needs to quit being a coward and listen/ read what the American public have to say.

Thanks, Nancy Cronk! We cannot afford as a nation to have congressmen in office, Republican OR Democrat that do not respect the office of the President!

Oh, and Mr. Lamborn's comments only give evidence of the republican perception of our President. It also demonstrates how ignorance only perpetuates the racism and discrimination that has for far too long thrived in this "corporation" we know as America. Bigotry such as this should be dealt with rather than swept under the rug of apologies. Enough is truly enough. Much like the rest of us who possess a birth certificate, this "corporation" has become rich off the monies they've been collecting on our existence, which means they've collected on President Obama's name as well. Yet, while they've spent eons camouflaging this little secret, they've had no trouble making any person of color feel less than adequate and beneath human contempt. Well it's time to wake up, turn the tables and stop giving them the ammunition to keep us oppressed. "I'm sorry" is an insult to our intelligence as much as it is a direct slander to our heritage. People of color have contributed greatly to the development and rise of this "corporation" and still the best we get is tolerance. After all the years that people of color have lived within these shores, the time for acceptance is relevant. My sweat and the sweat of my people earn us the right to be accepted once and for all. Keep your apologies, time for respect. Give honor where honor is due, according our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. Go to church every Sunday and act like this, one word Hypocrite!

I agree with Mr. Watts. It's time something is done. This is ridiculous. I don't remember when any other U.S. President has had to deal with so much opposition and personal animosity from his subordinates. From the time this man has been in office the battle to derail him began and for what reason? He's done exactly as he said, if he made any errors he owned up to them (not something we've seen from anyone else) yet the opposing parties have not gotten down to business but rather have rallied together to tarnish our President. It is my personal belief that for such a time as this has the Lord Almighty raised Mr. Obama up to become President. I applaud him for standing and not allowing the childish tantrums of the spoiled and privileged to alter his demeanor or character. He has proven himself to be an honorable man and I pray we have the wisdom to keep him in office. It's time for a drastic move, time to remove all those new republican representatives who've shown their true agenda, which is not in the best interest of the people, any people other than themselves.

In my opinion I feel that a member of congree has an obligation to set examples. To refer to tar-baby is a as reference to a law being past in MY OPINION is wrong,we are presently suffering in this country with BULLYING it is a serious situation children die either self inflictions or by others. Some where along the line adults that are regarded as law makers need to STOP and think before making this type of statement IT IS WRONG! That said I have to say I do not listen to the hip hop so not qualified to say BUT I do feel we all need to be more sensitive to words said they can hurt !Also one last thing we have enough problems at hand in this country without stirring up the people who find this languge offensive. That is my view.Thank you though for asking!

Enough is enough....Its time that WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE fight back. I am so sick and tired of the Republicans dangeling the poor and middle-class Americans over our Presidents head...he is damned if he do and damned if he don't. They are tring to drive a wedge between the Democrates, the President and the supporters of their party...and some of us are allow this to happen. We must stick together and fight back. Most of all, we must remember that the choices that are being made by Obama is for the sake of the poor and middle-class people. Lets put the blame where the blame belongs...on the Republicans. We must not allow them to continue with holding the American people hostage. The Republicans claim that the new cut being made will create more jobs, so lets hold them to this claim. Lets not allow them to continue to blame our President for eveything ...and let us start holding the Republicans responsible for their actions. OBAMA 2012.!!!

This is one of those topics that really requires a response from the WH. If the WH continually remains silent when these type of supposedly clever attacks on the POTUS go without ramification, then people this "idiot" will think they have a green light to continue to do so... This is an outrage to the American people and the Office of the President of the United States. Mr. Lamborn should be "tarred and feathered" Publically, for this Racists and Unacceptable remark! Then thrown Out of Office back to where ever it is with his kind.

Who is surprised by this? This is how they truly think.
[I.,E. "They" means: many if not most of the reactionary right-wing,
As they say in Florida: "There's a darkie in the White House. America is lost."

What they mean is that their "Ameirca" [ the one they talk about when they say "We want our count4ry back"] is an primitiveWhite-Supremist place..

Sooner or later, people who care about America's future will have to face that fact.
