'Consumer Reports' Picks The Best Coffees: Gloria Jean's, Newman's Own Rank Highest

First Posted: 08/02/11 02:57 PM ET Updated: 10/02/11 06:12 AM ET

Gloria Jean's and Newman's Own make the best widely available Colombian coffee, according to a taste test in the September 2011 issue of Consumer Reports magazine. The two brands were among the most expensive CR tested, at $13.50 and $13.60 a pound respectively. They were both rated "very good."

Third place, with just a "good," went to Bay Area fave Peet's, the most expensive Colombian coffee tested. All three handily beat out 2009's winner, Eight O'Clock Coffee, which rejiggered its blend, apparently for the worse. Testers gave special commendation to New England Coffee's decaf, which came in fourth despite its flavor-sapping decaffeination, and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf's Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Light Roast, which they called a best buy. The worst-performing two were heavily advertised market leaders Folgers and Maxwell House, which got a "fair." Starbucks came in fifth.

Consumer Reports rated all the coffees on their inclusion of various flavor attributes, the most positive being a "fruity" aroma.

UPDATE: A representative from Eight O'Clock coffee wrote in to deny that the brand had changed its coffee blend between the 2009 and 2011 tastings, despite Consumer Reports' findings of decreased flavor. "Eight O’Clock Coffee continues to be committed to the highest quality standards. To confirm, we are sourcing the same high-quality 100% Colombian Arabica beans and expertly roasting them as we have in the past -– only the graphics on our packaging were changed," she writes.

Yuban (medium original roast). Anyone else likes Yuban?? Supposedly it is "Rainforest Alliance Certified" (only 30% of contents, though, as they honestly disclaim, if a bit in really tiny print), and the container is made of "recycled materials" (the tin can itself? the plastic lid?) Whether or not any of that information is true, this coffee tastes surprisingly good, to my taste. I will have to verify how Yuban really rates in conscientiousness standards (because I think it is good to patronize coffee grown by ecologically-responsible and fair-compensation-minded producers). Oh how I love my coffee -- but if it is causing the degradation or decimation of the rainforest and the creatures who live there, then I can't really nor thoroughly enjoy it.

Yuban is pretty good for its price. They took it out of grocery stores where I live and I found it at Walmart a month ago. I had to buy some because it had been years since I last had it but it tastes like they changed it. Still, it is good.

My favorite coffee is organic Sumatra. But if I run out I like the Yuban DARK roast.

They skipped Trader Joe's. Weird. I love that it's fair-traded, organic and delicious!

Trader Joe's invites you to bring your own mug and have a cup on them while you shop, and they don't even mind if you get a refill on your way out.

And because of their kind generosity, along with their fab fair trade and organic coffee options, Trader Joe's gets my coffee dollars in return!

When they have them in stock, try the Kirkland Brand varietal coffees at Costco: Sumatra, New Guinea, Ethiopian, Colombian, etc. -- very good coffees and cheap like you wouldn't believe.

(Kidding aside, Costco's Kirkland Sumatra is one of Tabby Cat's faves.)

Eight O'Clock has never been the same since A&P, in a desparate attempt to raise capital, sold off it's most nationally known brand (an A&P exclusive for over 100 years) to another company. A&P is even more smaller than ever, a shadow of what it once was. What a waste.

The best coffees do not come from the supermarket. But, from independent roasters, from whom you can order online, fresh roasted coffee. Two of my favorites are La Colombe and Awhaw cafe, both have outstanding coffees. High quality fresh roasted beans for about the same price as your local market.

I can only imagine the heavenly aroma that exudes from grinding up and brewing high quality *freshly* roasted coffee beans. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations you might be able to offer for a tried and true independent roaster that I can order from online.
Thanks! ~ Evan
