Facebook Buys iPad Book Creator Push Pop Press (VIDEO)

Facebook Buys Another Startup

Facebook has just snapped up another startup: Push Pop Press, a maker of interactive iPad books co-founded by a former Apple engineer.

The company aimed to "blow up the book," in Wired's words, with ebooks that incorporated interactive infographics, adjustable images, audio, and video. Push Pop Press presented at the 2011 TED conference and helped create Al Gore's dynamic e-book, Our Choice.

So what will Facebook do with the company? According to statements from both the social network and the startup, e-books aren't in Facebook's future.

"Although Facebook isn't planning to start publishing digital books, the ideas and technology behind Push Pop Press will be integrated with Facebook, giving people even richer ways to share their stories. With millions of people publishing to Facebook each day, we think it's going to be a great home for Push Pop Press," Push Pop Press wrote in a statement.

A Facebook spokesperson told All Things Digital, "Facebook isn’t planning to get into the digital book business, but some of the ideas and technology behind Push Pop Press will be integrated with Facebook."

Facebook has been known to acquire startups not only for their technology, but also for their talent. For example, as the New York Times reported recently, Facebook purchased Drop.io for "millions," then shuttered the service. "All Facebook wanted was Mr. Lessin," Drop.io's founder, according to the Times, which adds Facebook has "bought a string of small start-ups with names like Parakey, Hot Potato, and Octazen. Almost all their products have been killed." (See more examples of tech "acqui-hires" here.)
