Obama: Now The Debt Ceiling Deal Is Done, It's Time To Focus On Jobs

First Posted: 08/02/11 02:53 PM ET Updated: 10/02/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Speaking just minutes after the Senate passed legislation to raise the debt ceiling -- removing the last political hurdle for that bill's passage -- President Barack Obama delivered a speech in the Rose Garden in which he once again pleaded for a renewed focus on jobs.

Sounding at times exasperated that the political conversation had veered so swiftly to the topic of austerity, Obama urged Congress to present him with job-creating bills as soon as it returned from its August recess. The specifics were pretty much the same as what the White House has stressed for weeks if not months: free trade agreements, patent reform, an infrastructure bank, regulatory changes and the extension of the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits.

"Growing the economy isn’t just about cutting spending, it is not about rolling back regulations that protect our air and water and keep people safe. That is not how we are going to get past this recession. We are going to have to do more than that," he said.

"There already is a quiet crisis going on in the lives of a lot of families and a lot communities all across the country. They are looking for work and they have been for a while ... that ought to compel Washington to cooperate, that ought to compel Washington to compromise and that ought to compel Washington to act."

Coming so soon after both the president and a large portion of the Democratic party signed off on a bill that takes roughly $2.4 trillion out of the economy in the next 10 years, it was hard to imagine that the remedies being offered would have much of a cumulative effect. Moreover, a "pivot" to jobs was already tried unsuccessfully after the tax cut debate at the end of 2010 and the government shut down debate in the spring of 2011.

But Obama's speech was more about establishing the proper tone than it was about forging out new legislative remedies. With the debt ceiling debate now over until after the 2012 election, the major discussion shifts back to what, if anything, government can do to spur economic growth. One portion of that argument will come when Congress must pass a budget to fund the government by the end of September. But the White House will likely try and create some sort of defining contrast between the president and his Republican critics well before then.

"[W]hen Congress gets back from recess, I will urge them to immediately take some steps -- bipartisan, common-sense steps -- that will make a difference; that will create a climate where businesses can hire, where folks have more money in their pockets to spend, where people who are out of work can find good jobs," said Obama. "Both parties share power in Washington, and both parties need to take responsibility for improving this economy. It's not a Democratic responsibility or a Republican responsibility; it is our collective responsibility as Americans."

Raising the debt ceiling to fix the economy is like raising the blood-alcohol limit to solve drunk driving.

I think obama needs to get his eyes checked. He has said he has been " focused" on jobs now for over a year and I think it's more hokus pokus than focus.

The government will remove another trillion dollars from the economy and the libs want more jobs?? Hello!! You don't remove dollars from the economy and then expect business to create jobs with less money in the economy. It just won't happen. What the government will take from the economy can't be supplied by business to create jobs.

and who ,may I ask, is the driving force, behind removing all this money from the economy?
Is it the libs? No.Its the tea party lead by Ayatollah Norquist the supreme dictator of the republican party

Do some not know that when the government borrows 230Billion in the market of available funds there is that many less dollars to be used to stimulate the economy. When the government passes legislation to raise the debt ceiling by trillions of dollars there are that many less dollars to create the private investment need to again stimulate the economy. When the Government who spends the money based on the last approved budget supplied by the liberals and the spending is by continuing resolution based on that budget the libs decide the spending. The only way the republicans can decide spending is if their budget plan is approved and passed into law. The libs in the senate are not about to approve a Republican budget plan. Likewise the President will veto the republican budget or spending bill if it was approved. So by default the spending is by the liberals. That's why it's out of control.

It is a common and very popular belief, that the inside of obama’s head is completely empty, a total vacuum, however, just recently, scientists have found a tu_rd in there. It is not confirmed just yet, what kind of tu_rd it is, but we_asel or sku_nk are the two top choices.

Obama talks about jobs like he did hope and change. It all sounds good but never turns into anything but another speech. First is was Obamacare, then we will do jobs. Then the almost trillion dollar stimulus to pay back his rich buds and friends who got him elected, then we will do jobs. Soon as we get a budget then we will do jobs. Oops debt ceiling first, then jobs....oopss vacation, then we will do jobs and this time we promise. Jobs will come when we are close enough to the 2012 election to make it worth Obama's time. Otherwise, the man couldn't careless. "Jobs" is nothing more than speech material until election time.

Good luck on that Mr. president. You've totally capitulated to the lunatic fringe in this country time after time and each time they roll you, you come out saying you hope they'll work with you on fixing the economic mess they created. When are you and your advisors going to wise up to the fact that the Republicans want the recession to continue. They don't care about the poor or unemployed and I guess you don't either. I don't know who taught you to negotiate but you need to go back to school on your technique sir! You've lost this voter. I have no faith on Dems or the system and if the right wing are going to rule even without being elected, I say let them get elected by the idiots who vote for them and then I want to see who they blame for their situation.

Quit blaming the right for what the president can't get done. That's what happens when you elect a community organizer and then think he's king.

Excuse me but your full of you know what. Yes, the President should accept blame, as should Harry Reid, for allowing the right to manipulate them, however, Obama and the Democrats have had to deal with a group of bullies who are determined to insure they filibuster anything and everything. They have made the Senate completely worthless or worse, as they filibuster everything and any nominee. They are ruining this country and destroying our gov't. The problem with the current situation is that the Dems don't play the same games to the same extreme as the right. My view is that if they want to play their ugly games; then we need to play your games in the same arena, sadly. So...my hope is that when you all take over the Senate and Presidency, and really run the country into the ground, I hope the Dems filibuster every single last bill or nominee you people offer up. Let's see how well you govern when the circumstances are switched? Sadly, the Dems won't do that. There are too many of them afraid to fight back and there are too many of them who are more mature than the Republicans they face on a daily basis. They falsely believe you can reason with your folks. You can't. They falsely believe that the Republicans care about this country. They don't. They care about 2 things: power and money. Period.

We gave the wealthy their tax breaks......The President now needs to come out and demand more jobs. The tax breaks were put in place so corporations could/would create jobs....where are those jobs now?

I thought we were promised jobs when we handed over almost 1 trillion dollars on the promise unemployemnt would stay below 8%! Instead, all we got for our money was Obama's fat cat friends paid for getting him elected.

Mr. President ,
When you signed on with the republicans to end the so called debt ceiling crises, you gave away any hope for money for new job creations, yes sir we the citizenry know what is goin on.
If you were so interested in job growth you would have stood against the republican obstructionist when you had the Nation behind you !!!!!

This is what he should have fought for in his speech a week ago, not after he gave over to the republican obstructionist once again, to little to late.

exposing the lies and deceit from all sides
11:27 AM on 08/03/2011
I thought he was doing that in his first 3 + 1/2 years.... NOT... unless you are happy with all the new government positions he mad that eats up revenue... High wages, transportation, housing, food, clothing, and whatever else they need... while you are working and your dollar is getting you less...

Like in Illinois... where the working class is getting less of their paycheck, because of a 66% increase in wage taxes to pay for the social programs Obama has bragged about.... AND the state is still Bankrupt.

Obama purposefully Killed job growth on the East Coast, because they didn't involve unions...

Do your own research for once and find out what a liar and deceiver Obama really is.

Yep, it's all smoke and mirrors since most are up for re-election. Any and all of them will say what they think we want to hear, expect us to take it as gospel, and be so amazed when they finally discover Americans are on to them.
