Cargill Turkey Recall: Meat Giant Recalling 36 Million Pounds Of Ground Turkey Linked To Salmonella Outbreak

Cargill Turkey Recall

MARY CLARE JALONICK   08/ 4/11 12:55 AM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — Meat giant Cargill is recalling 36 million pounds of ground turkey linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak that has killed one person in California and sickened at least 76 others.

Illnesses in the outbreak date back to March and have been reported in 26 states coast to coast.

Cargill said Wednesday that it is recalling fresh and frozen ground turkey products produced at the company's Springdale, Ark., plant from Feb. 20 through Aug. 2 due to possible contamination from the strain of salmonella linked to the illnesses.

Company officials said that all ground turkey production has been suspended at the plant until the company is able to determine the source of the outbreak.

"Given our concern for what has happened, and our desire to do what is right for our consumers and customers, we are voluntarily removing our ground turkey products from the marketplace," said Steve Willardsen, president of Cargill's turkey processing business.

The Minnesota-based company said it was initiating the recall after its own internal investigation, an Agriculture Department investigation and information about the illnesses released by the CDC this week.

All of the packages recalled include the code "Est. P-963" on the label, according to Cargill. The packages were labeled with many different brands, including Cargill's Honeysuckle White.

The CDC said this week that cultures of ground turkey from four retail locations between March 7 and June 27 showed contamination with the same strain of salmonella, though those samples had not been specifically linked to the illnesses. The CDC said preliminary information showed that three of those samples were linked to the same production establishment, but it did not name that plant.

A chart on the CDC's website shows cases have occurred every month since early March, with spikes in May and early June. The latest reported cases were in mid-July, although the CDC said some recent cases may not have been reported yet.

The CDC said the strain is resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics, which can make treatment more difficult. The agency said 38 percent of those sickened were hospitalized.

The states with the highest number sickened were Michigan and Ohio, 10 illnesses each, while nine illnesses were reported in Texas. Illinois had seven, California six and Pennsylvania five.

The remaining states have between one and three reported illnesses linked to the outbreak, according to the CDC: Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

The CDC estimates that 50 million Americans each year get sick from food poisoning, including about 3,000 who die. Salmonella causes most of these cases and federal health officials say they've made virtually no progress against it.

Government officials say that even contaminated ground turkey is safe to eat if it is cooked to 165 degrees. But it's also important that raw meat be handled properly before it is cooked and that people wash their hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before and after handling the meat. Turkey and other meats should also be properly refrigerated or frozen and leftovers heated.

The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight hours to 72 hours of eating a contaminated product. It can be life-threatening to some with weakened immune systems.

Cargill executive Willardsen said, "Public health and the safety of consumers cannot be compromised."

"It is regrettable that people may have become ill from eating one of our ground turkey products," he said, "and, for anyone who did, we are truly sorry."

Gag me. When is our government going to really do something about Big Food's cavalier attitude toward the fact that the antibiotic resistant superbugs that THEY CREATED are KILLING people because THEY run the lines way too fast and loose? I would just like to thanks. I'am one of the people who received your wonderful case of salmonella. Thank You for costing me a fortune. Thank You for the un needed vacation of misery. Thank You For Nothing. In the future you can do a better job and quit cutting corners. I'm so glad you think saying I'm sorry makes everything better. Tell that to my family when were short on money because I have thousands of dollars of doctors bills I have to pay and they go with out. I think maybe you could stop by my house I could punch you in the mouth and kick you in the ribs and stomach for 4 days. Doesn't sound like fun and trust me it wasn't. In the future see this stops happening or lives, health and wallets depend on it.
Oh wouldn't be any chance anyone from the company would like to pay the mountain of bills I have for this

In an effort to eat healthier and lose weight, we have started eating buffalo meat. It has no preservatives, additives, antibiotics, etc...and is free range fed. Also naturally low in fat, and yummee! It is more expensive, but I think in the long run, it's worth it. We get ours at a health food store in a neighboring city, but you can get it online....a google search would find it, but it has "buffalo guys" in the name. (no, I'm not affiliated with them...just really happy with their product). Just my 2 cents worth. And oh yeah, I'll be returning my ground turkey that I bought at HEB yesterday....too bad I have to drive 40 miles to do that!

Sorry, I only eat the Karl Marx Jr. Socialist Turkey Burger.

Yet another incredibly great reason to by locally and encourage small farmers/livestock growers. I assure you that paying a little more for food grown or raised right will be, in the scheme of things, a lot cheaper that the doctor bills or funeral expenses incurred from conduming mass producers/growers.Support your local CSA!! They may just save your life.

I thought the government regulations behind all of our food guaranteed that this kind of thing couldn't happen? I mean, if they can't protect us when it's regulated, what the point? Why do they have to storm Raw Food stores with guns drawn because people want to buy whatever they want instead of relying on a broken system to protect us?

Bless your little unassuming heart. Would you be surprised to know that Fed. judges are some fo the major stockholders in large corporations that own mega farms and feedlots? Would it surprise you to know that those same stockholders are the ones who decide if those same companies are to be held accountable for their actions when sued over situations such as the one reported on here? Would you be surprised to know that your food is tampered with without your knowlege in regard to genetic engineering (introduction of viruses to the genes of the plants) in order to get higher yeilds or larger animals in a shorter time period? Oh, there is so much more that I could go on and on, but it's all information that is available to you via the internet. They don't even try to hide it! Even the fact that those little viruses are mutating and no one knows what the end results will be. Nice. Trusting the government to protect you? I think not. Where there is rampant greed, the are no morals.

Would it not be "We the people" that allows them to continue to operate this way? How can we fix a borked system when they don't listen to what we want and make decisions for us without asking? Why does GMO Producer Mansanto get to sit on the board of the FDA and kill private farmers? At what point does it become exactly what we were trying to escape in 1775? I just want them to pretend to care.

as soon as they have this tainted meat back in inventory they will redistribute it to walmarts across the country.

Government officials say that even contaminated ground turkey is safe to eat if it is cooked to 165 degrees. So why not send it to Third World countries where there is famine, let them cook it, instead of destroying it?
03:05 PM on 08/04/2011
why not serve it to YOUR family?

This protein source could be reconstituted safely by cooking and dehydration and used as an ingredient in a food for starving people. The idea of throwing it all away while there is this huge famine in Africa is absurd. Classic American neurosis that it is not edible. Only a significantly small portion of this turkey is infected and even it would be made safe by proper processing. A pound of protein for 34 million people. Can you imagine what a difference that would make?
03:47 PM on 08/05/2011
I probably have many times. But, we always cook our food thoroughly and well done. You never know sometimes until it's too late.
04:41 PM on 08/04/2011
And you have decided to believe what the govt. says for what reason now? This would be the same government that has been dragging this country through misery trying do decide which way they were going to delay the inevitable.........remember?! You might want to rethink your comment.
03:50 PM on 08/05/2011
Like I said to another reader, "you never know" and that's why I'm all about having my food cooked thoroughly and "well done" no matter how long it takes.

Republicants want to get rid of government branches like the fda, cdc, epa...If they were running things, this outbreak wouldve been blamed on something else...Obama for example

NO! (Just taking your "byline advice.) Your comment is a joke! Where do you get (if you DO research issues at all) your information? Do yourself a favor and say somethiing with some modicum of sense so your "fans" won't look too ridiculous for backing your comments.

Bachmann: Elect me and I’ll kill the EPA
TweetShare .Rep. Michele Bachmann officially entered the Republican presidential race on Monday night by promising to eliminate a major federal agency established under Republican President Richard Nixon.

Bachmann told the New Hampshire GOP candidates’ debate that she would eradicate the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, calling it “a job killing federal agency.”

In June, Perry signed a largely symbolic bill that allows Texas companies to continue producing incandescent light bulbs banned by the EPA, as long as they are sold within the state. Texas is the only state that has refused to put in place the EPA's new rules regulating carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases.

Of course the salmonella is resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics. More and more strains are developing resistance dancing around in the bodies of thousands of turkeys (and other livestock) who are being given a steady stream of antibiotics in their feed to keep them from dying in the dirty, crowded conditions they are kept in.

Heck yeah! The voice of reason. All these alarmists. You can't get sterilized food. Germs and such are part of the environment. Cook it and eat it hot. My father told me about chicken from the Marines mess hall that smelled like pure rottenness. They cooked it and served it up...nobody died.
04:50 PM on 08/04/2011
Then again, your dad obviously wasn't subject to meats full of growth hormones that are passed on to humans throught consumption, or crops that have been genetically engineered with viruses in order to get higher yeilds. Sounds like a miracle fix to feed the world except that the overdoses of vacines into feedlot animals have resulted in diseases that are adapting so fast they can't be controlled (thus, the outbreaks and recalls), and the growth hormones are resulting in health issues in young females (so far). Get informed. Times have changed.
