Americans For Prosperity Accused Of Voter Suppression In Wisconsin Recall Elections

Wisconsin

First Posted: 08/03/11 01:10 PM ET Updated: 10/03/11 06:12 AM ET

Americans for Prosperity, the conservative advocacy group backed by billionaires Charles and David Koch, has been accused of attempting to suppress Democratic voter turnout in the Wisconsin Senate recall elections.

Patch.com reported that Charles Shultz, a Democrat who lives in the 10th Senate District, received an absentee ballot application form last week from AFP that contained incorrect information on it. The form instructed him to mail it back to the wrong location by Aug. 11 -- two days after the recall election in his district between Sen. Sheila Harsdorf (R) and Shelly Moore (D) is set to take place, on Aug. 9.

Politico obtained a copy of the AFP mailer, which was also distributed to voters in the 2nd District.

The Wisconsin Democratic Party filed a formal complaint Tuesday with the state's Government Accountability Board over the issue, accusing AFP of "falsely representing the time frame" for the upcoming August 9 recall election. Shultz filed his own complaint with the GAB on Saturday.

AFP may also be getting involved in the increasingly heated ad wars that have been leading up to the recall elections. According to One Wisconsin Now, AFP has reportedly purchased over $150,000 in television ad time in the Green Bay, Madison and Milwaukee areas.

A spokesperson for Americans for Prosperity did not respond when asked for comment on the purchase, but One Wisconsin Now, a non-profit statewide progressive communications network, says the ad buy appears to be an effort to help the six Republican state Senators who were challenged by recall elections after supporting Governor Scott Walker's anti-collective bargaining legislation in early 2011.

Scot Ross, the Executive Director of One Wisconsin Now, said at least one of the AFP-backed ads will air in support of two Republicans, Sen. Luther Olsen (District 14) and Sen. Robert Cowles (District 2). The group has also confirmed a $90,000 AFP ad buy in District 12, currently represented by Sen. Jim Holperin, a Democrat who is being recalled.

Walker's legislation -- which eliminated collective bargaining and other rights for public employees and forced state workers to start paying more for their pensions and health care benefits -- prompted voters to stage mass protests and led to nine total recall elections.

Six Republicans and two Democrats are still trying to keep their seats. One Democrat, Sen. Dave Hansen, fended off a challenge from Republican David VanderLeest in July. If Democrats pick up a total of three new seats in the recall elections, their party will retake control of the Senate and gain an increased amount of influence over Walker's budget legislation.

Spending on the recall elections, much of which is coming from outside groups, is expected to top $20 million. Sen. Alberta Darling, a Republican facing a challenge from Assemblymember Sandy Pasch, is on track to set the record for the most money spent by a state Senate candidate in Wisconsin, having already put more than $600,000 toward her recall effort.

Americans for Prosperity has a history of backing Wisconsin Republicans. The organization previously paid for an ad entitled "Stand With Scott Walker," showing its support for the governor's budget-cutting plan and blaming President Barack Obama for the February protests in the state.

The group also sponsored "Wisconsin Freedom Phonebanks" at the RightOnline Conference in June, in which conservative activists called voters to "get the pulse of the community."

Gov. Walker's ties to the Kochs -- billionaire brothers who are behind the second-largest privately owned company in the United States -- have caused controversy in the past, particularly after an incident where a man believed to be Walker made controversial statements to Ian Murphy, editor of the news site the Buffalo Beast, as Murphy pretended to be David Koch.

In light of the continual protests and recall elections, Walker admitted to making mistakes during his rocky first term but still defended his policy choices. He acknowledged that his controversial budget-cutting decisions could make it hard for Republicans to prevail in the August recall elections.

"If the Republican candidates are outspent two to one, it's pretty difficult," Walker told Reuters about the recall effort, adding that the party will have a better chance of prevailing "if things end up being relatively even and the message gets out."

This article has been updated to include additional information about advertising purchased by Americans for Prosperity.

"...particularly after an incident where 'a man believed to' be (Governor) Walker made controversial statements to Ian Murphy, editor of the news site the Buffalo Beast, as Murphy pretended to be David Koch." (Punctuation/quotes added to emphasize embedded refutation of the reality of this previously reported fact.)

Welcome to 'verifiable fact' free American Media news reports.I believe I am writing this. All the better to inform you of whatever (some think) you need to know or remember. This is the first time I have read that Governor Walker was not, in fact, the person who made publicly unprofessional and unpopular statements to Mr. Murphy on February 22, 2011. One has to wonder if this factual account of Walker's corporate friendly politics is being carefully (at first) "disappeared" by the corporate media from contemporary Wisconsin's and national political history and 'brainwashed' from the public's recent memory?

"Buffalo Beast Publisher Paul Fallon told The Huffington Post that the audio is "absolutely legit." That the call took place as described by the Beast has been confirmed by Walker spokesman Cullen Werwie."

How come the Koch bros dont go to jail for this kind of fraud? Are they exempt from the law just because they have money??? somebody please prosecute these bas $tards!

While this may be an attempt at voter fraud, I think may be a case of actual USPS mail fraud here. Hopefully someone has at least filed a mail fraud complaint against all organizations involved.

Treason, lol. What is it called when the Democrat national Committee makes tens of thousands of robocalls giving out the incorrect date? because they did, then claimed it was a "mistake."

I just heard on the local news that at least one state university in WI will be making student IDs in compliance with the state law to help meet the voting needs of their students.

Never ceases to amaze me that people can be so constructive in the midst of others being so destructive.

Americans for Prosperity is claiming the date was a typo. Do conservative organizations have a special keyboard? I have yet to find an "11" key next to a "9" on a QWERTY or Dvorak keyboard.

Probably used the same calendar as the Democrat National Committee when they phoned all those people and gave out the wrong date "by mistake." Of course, you won't read about that here, you'd have to read one of the local papers.

So much coverage of Wisconsin, and yet not a word on this:
http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/126825018.html

Imagine if the racial make up were reversed;
what the coverage would be like?

But go ahead, my Huffie friends;
give us your lib spin onthis story.

Is it Walker's fault, or Bush's fault?
02:42 PM on 08/05/2011
And what does that article have to do with the article upon which you are commenting, you race-baiting, r@cist tr0ll?

It has to do with Wisconsin, and HuffPost being selective in it's news coverage;
as well as left wing double standards.

But instead of blaming Walker or Bush, you went for an ad hominem attack;
typical left wing deflection, attack the messenger.

So now that you've gotten some of your hate out of your system, care to answer,
if the racial make up were reversed; what the coverage would be like here?

Uhm yea, this is the politics section - not crime. And here's a news flash for you, I read about this first thing in the morning (5AM), you're posting it at 2 in the afternoon.

Most of us libs and independents read and listen to a variety of news sources - not just HP.

I missed that.

Yes we independents do, which is why I posted it here.
Why didn't you, in the "crime" section?

Would you believe there is not a mention of this on the Fox News website??? Even when you do a search for it nothing comes up. lol Isn't it amazing when something to do with voter fraud can be spun in their favor they run with it for weeks, BUT, if it has to do with wrongdoing by one of their political teammates, then it gets swept under the rug. What a shocker!
12:14 PM on 08/05/2011
This is different, of course. In the case of GOP-backed groups, it's all about promoting patriotism and trying top save America from socialist aliens.
02:53 PM on 08/05/2011
Yeah, two black guys in fatigues standing in front of polling place in a black district represent the greatest threat to our Republic and warrant hundreds of references on Fox, but a mass mailing voter suppression effort by some of the wealthiest people in America is not mentioned. Fox, fairly unbalanced.

I remember that. They made it out to be the worst thing in the world, "Two scary black guys intimidating voters." They like to take a situation and make it into something that helps their narrative. I wonder if the viewers of Fixed News realized how much they are lied to everyday, either directly or indirectly. Withholding information is the same as lying. They don't want their viewers to worry themselves over little pesky things like voter suppression in Wisconsin because they are all for THAT type of voter suppression. If it helps their side, no matter what it is, it is ok. If it is something they do not support, than it gets weeks worth of coverage and maligning. Just look at ACORN. They took a valuable community organization and turned it into voter fraud central, which it was not. They also made it out to be a criminal organization, which it was not. Now, because of Fixed News’ hard work to malign this organization, a lot of people will not register to vote (mostly democrats.) They are so transparent it is sickening. How do the loyal viewers support this type of behavior? I don't know how people can continually put their heads in the sand and let our country, which they claim to love, lose one very important part of our foundation as a county,.....FREE AND FAIR elections. They are no longer free in some states and they haven't been fair in a long time.

Colbert did a fantastic piece on this last night. Wow what scum. Of course they played off the incorrect date as a typo: "11" instead of "9." Riiiiiight. What sucks is that the Koch Brothers are so rich they truly seem to believe they have the right to do things like this, such arrogance bred by their cash that they think their votes should have more weight than a lowly serf like myself.
And the worst part is that with the repeal of the McCain-Feingold bill, the votes of the ultra-wealthy really DO carry more weight. I can't fund a series of attack ads against Kim Simac...but they can afford to air constant lies towards Sen. Holperin for two months before an election.

The new Bircher/Libertarian Republican party people can count.
They have not had the vote count since the Clinton election.
They will steal elections to mainatin control of the government.
They will deny voting to as many possible Democratic party voters as possible.
They have had lots of practice since 2000 and will get better.
They must steal the 2012 elections.
