A 13-year-old boy was fatally shot while playing basketball with friends on the city's South Side Monday night, and police do not believe the child was the intended target.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Darius Brown was playing ball in the 4200 block of South State Street about 5:30 p.m. when someone in a passing car fired shots, striking him in the neck.

“He’s a good kid,” the boy's sister Arrius Brown told the Chicago Sun-Times. “All he does is play basketball.”

Family members told the Sun-Times that Darius played basketball in the park every day, and dreamed of playing professionally some day. He loved the Chicago Bulls, and had a picture of Derrick Rose--who is also from the South Side--hanging on his wall.

The Tribune reports that the boy was set to start 8th grade at Holy Angels School in the next few weeks. His basketball coach at the school told the paper "he would have been in the NBA."

Police do not believe that Darius was the intended target, and no arrests had been made as of noon Thursday.

"You read about it. You hear it on the news. You pray that it stops, but when it affects home you really feel it," family member Paris Morrison told NBC Chicago. "It's sad because of the violence that's going on. He was innocent."
