Heterosexual Pride Day Called For By Sao Paulo Council

08/ 3/11 07:09 PM ET   AP

SAO PAULO -- The city council of South America's biggest city has adopted legislation calling for a Heterosexual Pride Day to be celebrated on the third Sunday of each December.

Sao Paulo Mayor Gilberto Kassab must sign the legislation for it to become law and has said only that he is studying it. His office declined Wednesday to say whether he supports the proposal.

The legislation's author, Carlos Apolinario, said the idea for a Heterosexual Pride Day is "not anti-gay but a protest against the privileges the gay community enjoys."

As an example, he mentioned how Sao Paulo's huge gay pride day parade is held every year on Paulista Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in this city of 20 million people, while the March for Jesus organized by evangelical groups is not allowed on the same avenue.

"I respect gays and I am against any kind of aggression made against them," Apolinario said. "I have no trouble coexisting with gays as long as their behavior is normal."

The Brazilian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Association criticized the legislation, saying it could provoke homophobic violence.

"How many LGBTs will be attacked because of the message that only heterosexuality makes someone a moral person and a good citizen," the association said in a statement.

"The celebration of heterosexual pride is inappropriate because it belittles the just cause of the LGBT community," the statement added. "Unlike homosexuals, heterosexuals are not discriminated against simply for being heterosexuals."

In a recent report, the gay rights group Grupo Gay da Bahia said 260 gays were murdered last year in Brazil, up 113 percent from five years earlier.

Um....what?

After all the mayor has vetoed the law. According to the mayor, "straight people are the majority, is not victim of violence [due sexual preference], threatens or harassment. They don't need a day to affirm themselves".

So now we can stop the whole drama.

I approve, Let's show those gays that being straight is just as good as being gay.

just like u have the right to VOICE that you DON'T CARE that i am shocked. i have the right to voice that i am shocked.

i don't know if we are reading the same comment threads. but it is disturbing how just because people disagree on a subject they'd much prefer to say something rude and disrespectful as a means to get their point across. guess what. no one will ever care how right one is, if that person adds a hint of distain to their tone (be it through snark and sarcasm).

HuffPo seems to be saturated with individuals hell bent on proving they are the smartest. So much so, that i have read arguments between two people holding the same view point, and they were too arrogant to ask for clarification. Had they asked, or approached each other sans snark, the exchange could have gone differently.

I am not going to make assumptions about which side of the argument you are on... at this point i kind of don't care anymore... i cared just enough to post this, but not enough to continue it further. (in case you ask "well if u don't care anymore than why respond?") take it how you want it.

Seems you're the one displaying preposterous, yet typical, lack of brains. There is not one single post on this thread from a homosexual "freaking out" about some heterosexual pride parade. You want a parade? Go file an application for a permit and knock yourself out.

Do you also consider the labeling of white supremicist prejudice as hate to be intolerant as well? As I noted earlier, one should not be so tolerant as to tolerate intolerance.

So, in your view, a cop that is physically restraining an assailant from assaulting a person should be arrested for assault as well? If that person being attacked tries to strike back, it's not self-defense?

Like Cable's been saying, there's no way you can be call it 'intolerance' to not permit someone else's intolerance. If you did, then there would be an infinite overflow of intolerance claims; I could claim that you're being intolerant of others being intolerant of those being intolerant. And then you say I'm being intolerant of you being intolerant of others being intolerant of those being intolerant. And so on.

Why is it we never hear any complaints about the millions of dollars Pride has brought to the tourist industry in so many cities? It would seem people can't see enough 'gay' money, it's only gay people they have a problem with.

I've gotta get off this for awhile, it I read one more post with someone saying they have nothing against gay people if only they'd act 'normal' one more time I'm going to pop a vein.

No.

I am heterosexual and unlike the gay community I've never suffered one second for being hetero and cannot think of a single person I know who has. Women's Pride Day, talk to me about that as I have suffered for being a woman but that was completely gender based and had nothing to do with my sexual orientation.

Whatever floats your boat, Erewhon7, but in my opinion the desire for a Hetero Pride Parade is beyond petty and suggests a little therapy and self evaluation might be amiss.

Because the purpose of this parade isn't to celebrate their bliss. Did your lack of reading comprehension surface again when it came to the legislation author's statement of the purpose of the event?

I have no clue to what you're talking about. You're obviously a heterosexual, and that's fine. Do you have any reason to be "proud" of it? Did you choose it? Achieve it? Accomplish it? No, you are simply made that way.

Homosexuals are the same. The glaring difference is that heteros are the vast majority of people and they do not suffer the indignities that are heaped on homosexuals. Gay "pride" is really an affirmation of assimilation into "normal" society. Homosexuality is and has always been a normal part of life. Persecution of gays absolutely necessitates push-backs - gay pride activities. There is no need for this in heterosexual communities. This heterosexual pride festival is clearly an insult and a "get back in your place in the closet" statement to gays and lesbians.

The next time you use the word "bigoted", ask yourself if you think White Pride festivities are, in any way, appropriate simply because Black Pride activities have taken place. Neither being Black or White is something to be proud of, specifically; but African-American festivals are appropriate and also necessary to affirm the value and integral part that this minority culture plays in American culture. A White Pride festival is clearly bigoted and is entirely analogous to a Heterosexual Pride parade.

Are you still LYAO? Just look at some of these comments! Some people actually believe that the Heterosexual Pride Day was organized to celebrate heterosexuality (amazing as that seems). My point is, that the name of this festival is a misnomer. It should rightfully be called "We're Better than You Day".

Why do the gays have a parade anyway?
Its good to be proud of who you are but you don't need to make floats and dress up like mr.slave from south park. OHH GEEEZZZ.
I bet gay pride parades even piss some gay people off too.

Why do straights have a parade anyway?

• Carnival in Rio, Mardi Gras in New Orleans;
• Rose Bowl Parade (and all the other New Year’s Day Parades)
• How about "débutante balls" or "cotillion balls," also known as "coming-out" parties?”
• Miss America, Miss Universe, Mr. Universe, any number of beauty pageants;

Could you please detail what the gay agenda is?

Is there perhaps some sort of secret pink memo upon which all the details reside?

I know that it is obviously a lot to ask of people such as yourself to allow people to treated equally regardless of their biologically derived sexual orientation, but I am truly curious what you consider the "gay agenda" to be apart from that.

The gay agenda is not just acceptance, but LOVE...unconditional love of everything homosexual. The gay agenda is to get everyone to think that all gays are FABULOUS, and to be jealous of them because they're so much BETTER than us.

Why is it that more non-gay people know about this "gay agenda" than we gay people do? I've been out of the closet since 1968 and have been active in many different gay organizations but I've never seen a copy of this so-called agenda we have.

Could you please post it for all the world to see?

Oh, oh, pick me...pick me.

I've been dwelling on that question for awhile and knew, being straight, that I would figure it out....we're gifted, don't cha know?

The gay agenda is to have all the people in the world have equal human rights, be treated with dignity and respect and to be able to be in the world without a threat to their person. Trying to trick us with all that fabulousness, we're on to you now!
