Jerry Lewis No Longer Serving As MDA National Chairman, Won't Appear At This Year's Telethon

LAS VEGAS — Comedian Jerry Lewis and the Muscular Dystrophy Association aren't saying why they're fully parting ways after 45 years and raising more than $1 billion for the nonprofit through its annual telethon.

But the 85-year-old comedian told reporters last week that he plans to hold a press conference the day after this year's telethon to talk about what he thinks is important. When pressed by a reporter about his role with the telethon, Lewis said: "It's none of your business."

The association announced Wednesday that Lewis was no longer its national chairman and he would not appear on the telethon this year. Candi Cazau, a Las Vegas-based publicist for Lewis, declined comment to The Associated Press on Thursday, saying Lewis was traveling outside Nevada, his home state.

Jim Brown, spokesman for the Tucson, Ariz.-based Muscular Dystrophy Association, declined to say what prompted the announcement.

In May, Lewis said in a statement issued through the association that he would make his final appearance on the telethon this year and sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" during a six-hour primetime broadcast scheduled for Sept. 4.

But during a session with reporters last week at a Television Critics Association press tour to promote an upcoming TV documentary, "Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis," Lewis hinted that his involvement in raising money for muscular dystrophy research wasn't finished.

"Who told you that?" Lewis asked a reporter who asked him how he felt about this year being his last telethon. "I never read it."

"Do you remember when the New York Times printed, `Dewey wins'? I rest my case, pal," Lewis said. "Anything you read, read it twice."

In 1948, the Chicago Tribune famously printed the headline "Dewey defeats Truman" the day after Harry Truman beat Thomas Dewey in the presidential election.

Lewis also harshly criticized reality television shows that include heavy involvement from telethon co-hosts Nigel Lythgoe and Alison Sweeney. Lythgoe is executive producer of "American Idol," which Lewis called a singing competition of "McDonald's wipeouts," while Sweeney hosts weight-loss show "The Biggest Loser."

"You just have to be bad. The business is scrounging around for what to do," Lewis said when asked how comedic actors can become great today. "And the first thing a good comic must do is let them know he hasn't changed.

"He can bring that same veracity and that same performance to a medium that's running around, knocking their brains out trying to see how we beat the fat lady at 375 pounds, and in four months she's going to be 240. Who (cares)," Lewis said. "It's ridiculous."

When asked what he'd have to do to be satisfied with his life, Lewis said: "Get the cure for muscular dystrophy, then I'm fine."

Lewis later said he would hold a press conference Sept. 5 to clarify his plans.

"I will have plenty to say about what I think is important. And that's the future, not the past," he said.

Some theories:

- The MDA is getting more money from other sources and the telethon costs too much to run. The telethon is simply not a draw anymore and they want it to phase it out altogether.
- The MDA wants to get away for the demeaning and offending "pityfest" tactics that Jerry has employed and refused to stop using
- Jerry is too old, sick and/or demented to do this anymore
- Jerry's gargantuan ego wanted to make his last show a really, really big appreciation of himself. More that it usually was--if that's even possible.

Some thoughts:
- My brother in law always wondered if the MDA ever found a cure for anything
- It was never the same after Jerry had his hart attack. Wacthing a pericdan-buzzed, chain smoking, blubbering Jerry in the 70's was priceless
- Jerry always said that he would never tell why he put so much energy into the MDA until after he died. Why is this shrouded in secrecy?
- I always wondered if he did this to show that he wasn't difficult and egotistical

i wish them luck getting big names to sign on to entertain during this year's event. i wish them luck raising the kind of money they would have raised this year had they done the decent thing and given jerry a proper hail and farewell. there would have been a parade of A-list stars lined up to personally hand jerry checks donated in his name and honor. instead, they have a public relations nightmare, painting them as ingrates and highly disrespectful of the man who has given his best efforts to this organization for decades. likely, jerry will ask that donors not punish the kids by withholding funds this year. but this is a sad and sorry way to end an era.

Anybody else ever think the whole Jerry Lewis philanthropic endeavors were his guilt compensating for the millions he made early in his Hollywood career playing characters that acted mentally disabled?
He was defintiely at his best in The Caddy with Dean Martin. Now thats a movie to remake with a Jerryesque character as caddy to Tiger Woods. Can't you just picture it... Heeeeyyy Tiiiigh-geeerr!

Jerry Lewis proved himself to be one of the greatest humitarians the world has known--he ran a marathon decades long to fight this horrible disease; not just some one-off showboat gig that other fameous hollywood types perform. How many big-big hollywood stars can any of us say the same of? He deserves our eternal respect and gratitude---and to be honored accordingly. We love ya' Jerry--now go make a funny movie for us to laugh at!

"I decided after forty-one years of battling this curse that attacks children of all ages, I would put myself in that chair, that steel imprisonment that long has been deemed the dystrophic child's plight. I know the courage it takes to get on the court with other cripples and play wheelchair basketball, but I'm not as fortunate as they are. I'd like to play basketball like normal, healthy, vital and energetic people. I really don't want the substitute. I just can't half-do anything. When I sit back and think a little more rationally, I realize my life is half, so I must learn to do things halfway. I just have to learn to try to be good at being half a person." - Jerry Lewis

With a guy like this speaking for People with Disabilities, who needs enemies.

Good riddance, Mr. Lewis.

...and a few ill-advised words negate 5 decades of hard work? No, they don't. Your attitude toward Mr. Lewis is exemplar of the triumph, in some people's minds, of style over substance. But I still believe that substance counts---I'lll take billions of dollars in fundraising and honor him for that before I'll allow a few badly chosen words to bring down one of the greatest ACTUAL humanitarians our Nation has known. Love ya' Jerry...and thanks from the bottom of my heart.

As you will, Tony. There are a great many People with Disabilities who would rather forget Jerry Lewis entirely; myself included. His, 'few ill-advised words,' are indeed a subject involved in studies of Disability Culture in Universities, believe it or not. There are books containing his hateful words and demeanor towards People with Disabilities Tony.

Cheer on, my friend; do and believe as you will.

I love a good public relations nightmare. The damned MDA had an entire year to have gotten Barack Obama to hand Jerry the Presidential Medal of Freedom live on the stage at what would have been his last telethon. Instead, the sour taste in everybody's mouth will cause massive viewer rejection. Hey, where's the guillotine they used to cut off Jerry's massive head?

God bless Jerry, he is a good man.

R. Rodney Howell is replacing Mr. Jerry Lewis, a man with a Heart of Gold, who was once Bigger than the Entire List of celebrities that usually come on the MDA Annual Telethon. Mr. Lewis is a Great Man who selflessly devoted himself for more than half a century to a Great Cause and and not only on the annual telethon where he raised Billions of Dollars to help find a cure for the dreadful disease called Muscular Dystrophy, but many other places around the globe as well, where he was seen and admired by hundreds of millions of people-to this very day.

To deny Jerry Lewis the chance to go out with the Class, Dignity, and Respect that he so rightly deserved was a totally selfish and classless act by Mr. Howell, and as far as I am concerned it is Mr. Howell and not Jerry Lewis that should have been fired and replaced!

The parade may pass some people by, but it will Never Pass Mr. Jerry Lewis!!

Thank-you Amacld.

Jerry is and always has been a Class Act with his fight against MD. His song at the end of the Telethon always brings tears to my eyes (You'll Never "Walk" Alone) for obvious reasons.

I'll miss him greatly.

It's surprising Lewis didn't get the boot from MDA after the essay he wrote (published in Parade Magazine) in which he stated that someone with muscular dystrophy is only "half a person."

Jerry Lewis deserves much better than this by the MDA. He has been there non-stop since I can remember and I've been watching the telethon since it was hosted out of New York City back in the 60s. I'd like to know the whole story before I give a final comment but for now, shame on you MDA.

Two things on TV I remember from my childhood, Battle of the Network Stars and Jerry Lewis Telethon.
