Jon Stewart Takes On The Super Committee (VIDEO)

Jon Stewart Super Congress

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 08/04/11 10:21 AM ET Updated: 10/04/11 06:12 AM ET

On Wednesday night's "Daily Show" Jon Stewart broke down what many Americans probably Googled this week: the new Super Congress (or Super Committee) to be put in place according to debt ceiling negotiations.

While it does sound like a coalition of superheroes (or "Legion of Doofs" as Stewart put it), the committee is actually a 12-person "mini" Congress composed of members of both parties that would be granted new powers to pass legislation and "fast-track" it through both chambers where it couldn't be amended by regular lawmakers.

But to Jon Stewart? This committee is straight out of a comic book. In the segment below he hilariously depicts Sen. John McCain, Chuck Schumer and other recognizable Super Congress members as the super-human lawmakers they really are.

Watch until the end to hear why the only thing the Committee can't win is the American people's favor.

I think they'll all agree to scr*w 98% of the taxpayers, and make the other 2% (and themselves) very happy.

Am I wrong or would the "Super Congress" basically constitute a new branch of government outside of Executive/Judiciary/Legislature? It doesn't seem right.

My thoughts exactly.

It is the Central Committee, just like the former Soviet Union! many liberals dont realize that because they don't follow history very well... They think the GOV is their savior...

@other people saying it would remove representational power. .

You didn't even get to vote for your state senator till 1913. The Founding Father originally set it up so the state legislatures picked your senator.

the House of Representatives is suppose to provide representation proportional to each state's population, But was fixed to 435 in 1911 (437 as AK-HI became states then back to 435) which leaves many areas under represented.

I would venture to guess, Baracous, that many conservatives don't know what you're talking about either. Ignorance isn't confined to liberals, far from it.

the top part was actually me quoting some of the crazy ramblings of someone else.

Congress was set up in such a way on purpose. The senate was not meant to be subject to knee jerk reactions.

I think spoiled children may have been more effective, next time lets just take the budget to an elementary school with a couple of sharpies.

The committee made some good recommendations but no one listened. And I do not like it that people are blaming all of Congress when it was the Tea Baggers who were the worst.

"The best thing is that we have a deal" --that is what politicians SELL us.

We cannot accept that. The goal shouldn't just be to "get a deal" as if regardless of what the deal entails it's of less importance than Dems and Reps simply agreeing to something. What happens when their compromises continually hurts our middle class??? The White House needs pressure from us to fight for the middle class. They wont do it on their own.

And the imminent threat of third parties has been averted.

I been saying this for years.

There never will be a serious third party in America.
Corporations don't want to bribe three parties instead of two.
