(Reuters) - A Kansas City man was charged on Wednesday with stealing an oversized baby bottle containing about $400 in charity money being raised to help a family pay burial expenses for an infant who died.

Samuel V. McKinney, 18, stole the bottle at a gas station where the money was being raised, charges filed by Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said. The jar had the baby's picture on it.

The jar had been kept on the counter with the gas station clerk's permission, the charging documents said.

The aunt of the child who died had checked on the jar throughout the day and found it missing in the evening, records showed. The records did not say how the baby died.

The theft occurred on July 20, according to the prosecutor. Police made the arrest after viewing surveillance video as part of the investigation.
