Katie Couric's 'View' Gaffe: Not Going To 'Castrate' Miley Cyrus (VIDEO)

Katie Couric

It's not every day that Barbara Walters tells Katie Couric that she's going to give her lessons about human anatomy—but Couric brought such a promise on herself when she made a hilarious gaffe about Miley Cyrus on Wednesday's "View."

The former anchor of "CBS Evening News" was a guest co-host on the show, making her official ABC debut. The ladies began discussing a recent picture of Miley Cyrus smoking.

After Whoopi Goldberg defended Cyrus, Couric weighed in.

"I'm not gonna castrate her because she's smoking," she began. "All I'm saying is that it's a bit disappointing—"

Co-host Joy Behar caught her mistake quickly, interrupting her to ask, "She has a penis also?!" Couric took things in stride, laughing as the audience lost it.

Walters jokingly added, "When this is over, you sit down with me and I'm gonna discuss sex with you."

No Huffpost, this was not "Katie Couric's AMAZING Gaffe," as indicated in your link. It's either her speaking metaphorically or meaning to say castigate. An AMAZING gaffe is Gerald Ford saying during the 1976 presidential debate that Eastern Europe was not under Soviet domination.

I'm sitting here masticating on my popcorn while I read this article. Exciting!

The REAL story should be someone was actually WATCHING these old bags of bones and hot air on the view and caught this.

That person should be castrated.

The only question here is HOW LOW will ABC sink before they decode to stop supporting the liberal progressive agenda???

Um, Joy, castration applies to both sexes. Are the ladies of the view really that ignorant?

It seems that Barbara Walters needs someone to teach her before she tries to teach Katie Couric.

Miley recently got a tat that might just express her sexual preferences. Miley is starting to look and sound more manly than when she was a little girl. Nothing wrong with this but maybe Couric is thinking the same thing. Miley may be coming out of the closet soon imho.

God help us if Sarah Palin had said that...
12:19 AM on 08/08/2011
Thing is, if Palin had done it she would have found a way to blame Obama for her mistake. Not laugh about her mistake.
And Katie doesn't claim to be an expert on everything like Palin who is an expert at nothing.

There isn't a mistake. Women can be castrated. Look it up.

If Palin had said it, she would have immediately released a statement indicating that she really MEANT to say it, she would work it into every speech and public utterance for months to come, AND she would write it on her hand and made sure that it was permanently loaded in her teleprompter.

If Palin only made the occasional gaffe, it would get the kind of coverage that this gaffe - or non-gaffe - by Couric is getting. The sad fact is that Palin cannot open her gaping yaw without spewing meaningless word salad, mangling history, or unleashing barrages of incoherent stream of unconsciousness gobbleydygook.

Clueless.

Um, it was a metaphor, but you know, maybe it was too big a word for the View audience. Also women do get castrated in some cultures. Try a google search, then try not to throw up.

In calling her "clueless", I was giving her the benefit of the doubt.

If she actually meant to use the word, she is much worse than that.

Just for clarification there, women can be castrated. But don't let the truth get in the way of your berating someone.
04:07 PM on 08/08/2011
NOPE she really is clueless....but good news...the show is geared for the clueless.

I think Ms. Couric got a wordsoup infection when she interviewed our great vice presidential candidate, former Alaska Governor and Fox News Journalist Sarah Palin.

Technically, castration involves removing the testicles (not the penis). There is an equivalent for women; which involves removing the ovaries. I think the above was a slip of the tongue when Katie meant castigate rather than castrate. That aside, people don't appreciate what it means when a woman's ovaries are removed. I'm just saying....

Actually, even if Cyrus had the correct male genitals, I do not think Couric meant it literally.
