29,000 Somali Children Under 5 Dead In Famine: U.S. Official

MOHAMED SHEIKH NOR and JASON STRAZIUSO   08/ 4/11 02:45 PM ET   AP

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Kaltum Mohamed sits beside a small mound of earth, alone with her thoughts. It is her child's grave – and there are three others like it.

Just three weeks ago, Mohamed was the mother of five young children. But the famine that has rocked Somalia has claimed the lives of four of them. Only a daughter remains. The others starved to death before Mohamed's eyes as she and her husband trekked to Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, in search of aid.

Thousands of parents are grieving in Somalia and in refugee camps in neighboring countries amid Somalia's worst drought in 60 years.

The drought and famine in Somalia have killed more than 29,000 children under the age of 5 in the last 90 days in southern Somalia alone, according to U.S. estimates. The U.N. says 640,000 Somali children are acutely malnourished, suggesting the death toll of small children will rise.

Mohamed and her husband tried to get their children from Somalia's parched south to the capital, Mogadishu, in time to receive emergency aid from the few humanitarian organizations that are operating there. They began their journey in the Lower Shabelle region, where the U.N. declared famine July 20. AP Television News found her that day looking after her severely malnourished children, cradling them in her arms.

Her family belongs to a tribe of pastoral nomads, but all of their livestock died in the drought. When her children fell ill, she took them to a hospital in the Lower Shabelle but couldn't afford the treatment they needed. Most aid is not getting to the south where it's desperately needed. An al-Qaida allied group, al-Shabab, controls much of southern Somalia and insists that there is no famine. It has banned all aid groups but the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The family's journey to the capital, one being made by thousands of other Somalis, came too late. Four of Mohamed's children died en route because of severe malnutrition and related complications.

"Death is inevitable," Mohamed told AP Television News on Thursday in a makeshift camp near Mogadishu's airport, home to hundreds of other displaced people. "But the surprise was how suddenly I lost my four children in less than 24 hours because of famine."

Instead of being able to caress her children, she crouched next to one of their graves and softly patted and smoothed the mound of earth covering it. She wept, then wiped away her tears. She still has a daughter to try to feed.

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is under way, and the family is fasting daily. Without food, though, Mohamed doesn't know how they can break their fast at sundown. The international community must do more to help, she said.

Meanwhile, famine still stalks her.

On Wednesday, the U.N. declared three new regions in Somalia famine zones – including the camps for displaced persons in Mogadishu. These are areas where the highest rates of malnutrition and mortality are taking place.

Nancy Lindborg, an official with the U.S. government aid arm, told a congressional committee in Washington on Wednesday that the U.S. estimates that more than 29,000 children under the age of 5 have died in the past 90 days. That number is based on nutrition and mortality surveys verified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A U.S. official noted Thursday that the U.S. said this week it would not prosecute legitimate aid groups trying to assist Somalis suffering from famine in areas under al-Shabab control. Such prosecution would have been possible under U.S. anti-terrorism laws, but getting groups to go into a part of Somalia controlled by a brutal, hardline Islamist insurgency is another matter.

The official, Jon Brause of USAID, told journalists in Nairobi, Kenya, that there hasn't been a dramatic increase in assistance flowing to Somalia after the announcement because it's so difficult to access al-Shabab-controlled territory.

No U.S. law specifically prevents aid to southern and central Somalia, where the U.N. food agency says it cannot reach 2.2 million Somalis in areas under al-Shabab's control. But bribes, tolls and other typical of costs of doing business in the largely lawless and chaotic country could have been punishable after the State Department declared al-Shabab a terrorist organization in 2008.

"We understand that some assistance may accidentally reach al-Shabab and we are reassuring people they will not suffer prosecution if that happens," said Bruce Wharton, the deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs.

Wharton signaled that the U.S. believes some inside al-Shabab might be more amenable to letting aid in than others.

"We do not believe al-Shabab is a monolithic organization," he said. "There are degrees of Shabab-ness, if you will, and we think it's important to find ways to get food to people, including people who are in al-Shabab controlled territories."

The Somali famine is a man-made disaster made worse by the depraved indifference of wealthy perverted psychopaths called Muslim leaders ruled by champions of mental illness, the Saudi Arabian royal family.

We in America have droughts, floods, earthquakes and every other sort of natural and man-made disasters. But the men and women of the United States band together to solve the problem and alleviate suffering.

The Saudi's fund the Islamic war against humanity. Islam is the perfect monster to unleash on an unsuspecting world because, as a creed, Muslims don't get into heaven through "good works." They are said to achieve this fete only through self-surrender to a creed of conquest, slavery and murder to advance the objectives of Islam, which is the absolute subjugation of humanity to a planetary Caliphate run by narcissistic psychopaths.

Saudi Arabia is a short distance to the East. The perverts of the royal family certainly take little Somali boys as sex slaves but will not take any action to alleviate the pain of the Somali people. (Do some checking and you will discover that all of the Islamic war lords and Taliban chiefs have strings of little boy sex slaves much preferred over girls.)

Muslims are too busy being slavers, murders and perverts warring with “infidels.” The job of helping our fellow man is left to the good and compassionate people of the West who the Islamic psychopaths hate and strive to conquer, murder, and enslave.

If you don't want to give to big aid agencies with high salaries consider helping a small local organization such as #VOA4SD http://www.voicesofafrica.info

I was just in Dadaab last week and the situation is horrible. WE want to go back and to help and have been trying to raise funds. It has been really frustrating to watch the aid machines reel in millions and to struggle to get enough for tents, fuel, and really basic things we need in order to help.

BUT not doing anything just because you are not in Africa is really inhumane. Yes, the Muslim world should be helping more and there are many Muslim organizations in the field. They are just overshadowed by the big aid agencies. In either case, a human life is a human life. And we are losing thousands of precious young ones EVERYDAY.

Lets do the math. We send them millions of dollars in aid. They are fed. They have more babies, and in a couple of months, the same situation. This is not sustainable. The only solution - stop having babies, get down to a sustainable size where you are doing more than trying to survive. it's easier to take care of yourself and one other adult, then yourself and 1 baby. Stop birthing, let nature take it's course on population control.

At least get your facts straight. Drought and the destruction of agriculture by warring militias are the culprits here. These groups also charge aid organizations in order to let them distribute humanitarian supplies. They in turn purchase Russian and US weapons/ordnance and the bloody cycle continues.

Get your facts straight pyradius, this problem goes further back than what you outlined.
Warring militias aka intruders that invaded that continent centuries ago.
Africa survived for thousands of years...BUT when certain people went there, then the continent began to suffer many plagues and other evil.

Its interesting seeing this not get much air time or concern over here in Africa, but the Big White Satan from the West is giving this top air time and money.. Corrupt clowns running around in their Land Rovers, Mercedes but could care less what is happening next door in and on their own continent. Where are all these rich Muslims countries at helping out their fellow muslim brothers?

Most of the international aid will never reach the people in need because of the greed and corruption and oh almost forgot religious beliefs.
03:43 PM on 08/05/2011
But that's not true. Much of the aid going into the countries affected by the Horn of Africa drought and food crisis - including Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya - is directly implemented. In this case, neither the relief supplies nor any cash is ever given to governments; instead, things like food, clean water and health care are delivered directly to families and communities by non-governmental organizations. And there's a lot of good working going on, even in the toughest places.

There are dozens, if not hundreds of aid organizations that are trustworthy, effective, efficient and do direct implementation of emergency response activities in places like Somalia. So please support them however you can.
10:20 PM on 08/05/2011
It's not the organizations, the last time aid was sent to Somalia in 93, it was taken of the runways by muslim terrorists as soon as it was dropped off the planes.
10:22 PM on 08/05/2011
They use the food as political leverage, they sell it to other countries for arms, and they use it to feed their troops, but it never reaches the people that really need it.

The news video shows mothers with 5, 6, 9 children. Yes, it's time for birth control along with food aid this time. The Western methods of condoms and pills would have limited success at best. Sterilization in the is what's needed to prevent more from starvation.

Idiot. Islam is actually very contraception friendly, birth control pills are 100% accepted in Islam; so as long as it does not harm the body. Learn, before spewing hate.

I wonder if the greedy Saudis are being asked to help. They are quick to send troops to quash freedom fighters in Bahrain. They can pass aid through al-Shabab if they want to. After all they are probably funding them anyway.

The greedy Yemenis had been helping Somalians for the past 15+ years, trying to subside their political conflicts, sending food shipment when necessary. Of course this has stopped due to Yemen's recent turmoil.

Perhaps you should ask how greedy New York speculators might have had a hand in this, with their food speculation gambit not too long ago?

This is such a horrible thing to hear about. My dad recently lost his job and my family can hardly afford more than one meal a day anymore. But I can't even imagine how it must be to not even have one meal a day and then to die of starvation.. or to watch your own children die because they are simply hungry. :/

I have never been poor. I did however put all my money in Lloyd's bank when I was in the UK and for a week they refused to allow me to access my money. For that week I was dependent on the kindness of strangers (and stole toilet paper from pubs). I am sure that it will not surprise you that those who were willing to help me were themselves struggling economically.

Your post has reminded me that I can do more so I have donated to MSF (Doctors without borders) and allocated the funds to Somalia.

Thank you for reminding me of how fortunate I am and of the responsibilities that stem from that good luck.

I wish the very best for your family!

The most disgusting thing about this how the GOP passed laws to prevent even the discussing of family planning in our country's aid to poor countries. Perhaps they should send the carcassas over to GOP headquarters. The vatican is none to innocent either.

Sure, they donate it to places like the Catholic Church, who then keeps a good chunk, uses a little for food, etc., and uses the rest to tell people that condoms make the AIDS epidemic worse.

Well, and then there's the Christians telling folks in Uganda that homosexuality is a choice, and that gays are evil. How did that one work out?

So the fact that millions are starving has to do with the GOP not the muslim terorists that are killing and threatening to kill aid workers there. Aid workers have to pay bribes and have hired gun men to get through the peaceful parts of that country. And here is a thought...why is it up to the governement to help? Why dont you send money? Why dont you go over and provide assistance? Dont use the lack of money as an excuse. The three dollars you have in your wallet would feed many people over there. Dont look to the government for solutions...look in the mirror
