SEALs Killed In Afghan Crash Were On Rescue Mission

Helicopter

KIMBERLY DOZIER and PATRICK QUINN   08/ 8/11 12:41 AM ET   AP

KABUL, Afghanistan — The 30 American service members – most of them elite Navy SEALs – who died when their helicopter was shot down had rushed to help Army Rangers who had come under fire, two U.S. officials said Sunday.

The heavy loss shows that clandestine tactics carry huge risks despite the huge success of the SEAL mission that killed Osama bin Laden more than three months ago. Most of the SEALs who died Saturday were from the same unit that killed bin Laden, although none of the men took part in that mission.

The U.S.-led coalition plans to rely more on special operations missions as it reduces the overall number of combat troops by the end of 2014.

This weekend, the rescue team had subdued attackers who had pinned down the Rangers and were departing in their Chinook helicopter when the aircraft was apparently hit, one of the officials said.

Thirty Americans and eight Afghans were killed in the crash, making it the deadliest single loss for U.S. forces in the decade-long war in Afghanistan. The Rangers, special operations forces who work regularly with the SEALs, secured the crash site in the Tangi Joy Zarin area of Wardak province, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Kabul, the other official said.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the event, as the investigation is still ongoing. The SEAL mission was first reported by CNN.

NATO was recovering the remains of the twin rotor Chinook helicopter. A current and a former U.S. official said the Americans included 22 SEALs, three Air Force members and a dog handler and his dog. The two spoke on condition of anonymity because military officials were still notifying the families of the dead.

All but two of the SEALs were from SEAL Team 6, the unit that killed bin Laden, U.S. officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Eight Taliban fighters were also killed in the battle, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement.

Afghanistan has more U.S. special operations troops, about 10,000, than any other theater of war. The forces, often joined by Afghan troops, are among the most effective weapons in the coalition's arsenal, conducting surveillance, infiltration and capture missions and night raids.

From April to July this year, 2,832 special operations raids captured 2,941 insurgents and killed 834, twice as many as during the same time period last year, according to NATO.

SEALs, Rangers, and other special operations troops are expected to be the vanguard of the American military effort in Afghanistan as international military forces start pulling out. By the time combat troops plan to have left the country, the coalition will have handed control of security to the Afghan forces they have spent tens of billions of dollars arming and training.

Special operations troops are expected to remain in the country after 2014 for counterterrorism missions and advisory support. Just how many will remain has not yet been negotiated with the Afghan government, but the United States is considering from 5,000 to 20,000, far fewer than the 100,000 U.S. troops there now.

Special forces are frequently used to target insurgent commanders as part of an effort to force the Taliban's leadership to agree to a negotiated peace. The operations, mostly in the form of night raids, are often carried out by Afghan and coalition special operations forces.

Night raids have drawn criticism from human rights activists and infuriated Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who says they anger and alienate the Afghan population.

But NATO commanders have said the raids are safer for civilians than relatively imprecise airstrikes.

As U.S. forces removed the wreckage Sunday, nearby Afghan and NATO forces battled insurgents as they carried out clearing operations in the areas around the crash site, a region that is just a stone's throw from the capital. The province, which borders Kabul, has increasingly come under Taliban control in recent months – even as the U.S.-led coalition has begun handing over security for parts of Afghanistan over to the government of President Hamid Karzai.

"There have been a small number of limited engagements in the same district" as Saturday's helicopter crash, NATO said in a statement. "However those clashes have not been in the direct vicinity of the crash site. As of now, we have no reporting to indicate any coalition casualties resulting from these engagements."

Early yesterday I said this was a trap and I was insulted here. It was a trap. WHY were Spec Ops sent instead of simply using drones? WHY were Rangers pinned down and in the words of a former Sec Ops last night - "over their heads"? It was a trap. Just as I said it was.

I dont understand the part about drones. You cant use those in a rescue operation.

Do you mean an ambush? Sure it was. Some Talib was probably hiding right where the most likely LZ was knowing that a reinforcement/extraction team would be along eventually and got off a shot. They probably kept the Rangers where they wanted them instead of withdrawing or pressing the attack just for this reason. An old tactic which unfortunately worked this time.

They could have even been in contact with a spotter near the base who told them when the copter was taking off. The Taliban hate and fear the SEALS and for very good reasons. I would agree that there is a good chance that this was planned.

There is almost no defense against something like that. Big slow target close to the ground. Countermeasures dont work against dumb weapons like an RPG.

Why couldn't they split them up into 2 or more helicopters?

If they were unexpectedly called to help their comrades, that would have delayed matters.

Oh, man... This is bad. Talk about a major moral blow to our troops, let alone the actual loss of life. Especially since these guys were the elite of the elite. They will take a long time to replace. God help those families.

From a war time vet, I say rest in peace and thank you for your ultimate sacrifice; thank you for your service! And, may God keep watch over your families

And thank you for your service also.

First and foremost, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to each and every family member who lost their love one in this very tragic incident.

Having said this, I will now address what I consider to be a still ongoing major blunder by the U.S. Department of Defense and/or The Department of The Navy. With all due respect to the U.S. Navy and its highly trained and specialized SEALS Teams, but I must question why Navy Seals are now conducting combat operations in areas NO WHERE near bodies of water (Oceans, Seas, Gulfs, etc., etc.)?

Last time I checked, Navy SEALS are highly trained in waterborne or offshore combat and counter-insurgency operations, and US Army Special Forces (Green Beret) forces, and Army Rangers are highly trained individuals in “Land-based” counter-insurgency, and small-scale attack operations, respectively.

My question: Since when are U.S. Navy Seals the chosen unit designated to rescue besieged US Army Rangers, Special Forces, or regular “Grunt Units?” During my days in the US military, the US Army, along with USMC grunt units, fought the “LAND BATTLES;” The U.S. Navy fought the “SEA BATTLES;” and the USAF fought the “AIR BATTLES.”

I believe its time to do away with all this BS multi-inter-service integration of war/combat duties. Time to return back to the ways each branch was trained to fight a war.

SEALS stands for Sea, Air and Land and I think in recent years the scope of their missions has been greatly expanded. I'm sure someone who knows a lot more about it than I can give you a lot more info.

I too, am so saddened by this, I can't even describe it.

Apparently they needed someone to go in and kick @ss.
They completed that part of their mission, successfully.

There are times where missions like this fail because of poor planning or just a random guy with a lucky r.p.g. shot. We don't know for sure which one it is. Let's find out which one it is.

The chances of this story being true is almost nil.

Seals Do not rescue Rangers, Marines or Rangers rescue Rangers. Please come up with a more plausable reason why 30 Seals were on 1 chanook.

This smells like a serious Coverup.

1 Chanook is a very HVT to any enemy operative. Whoever assigned 30 seals in a shithook needs to be fired and brought up on charges of Deriliction of Duty that led to the deaths of service members. 3 black hawks would have been better and if one was shot down the other 2 could continue with the mission. 5 P's man!

I said the same thing and a sgt. questioned my common sense. Fortunately actual combat veterans agreed with me. Read the posts, because they are very interesting and I said the exact same thing as you did. The general who planned this debacle should be canned.

05:45 PM on 08/08/2011
dwynnsplace....have read a great deal regarding SEALS and how they operate, you are right on the money...on all points. But the government is great when it comes to coverups......
08:22 AM on 08/09/2011
Worked and trained with many operators, Seals, SF, Marine Force Recon, All the Airborne Units including Combat Control teams of the Airforce. Spec Ops, believe it or not, have certain SOP's, one is not to have all you assets in one location,
This alone is reason enough for a full military inquiry. If this is a cover up, have the military admit the coverup, but do not disclose information they chose not to disclose,
ie... These service men died defending the beliefs of the American People, serving the betterment of Mankind... While serving mankind in liberating those oppressed they gave the greatest sacrifice for us all... How they died, with full honors, how they lived .. with full honors, How they will be remembered, with full honors... the rest... is military secret and should remain so.... Why make up BS, Something is definantly wrong in the middle east.

It's pretty obvious we were set up with bogus intelligence about a High Value Target (HVT). The enemy ensnared us into an ambush situation, and we fell for it.. Literally. With the leaky faucet of classified information from this administration, the enemy probably knows more about what we're doing, than vice versa.

When the Generals told the Politicians what needed to be don, we won wars.
When the Politicians tell the Generals what needs to be done, WE HAVE NOT WON ANY WAR.
When a Politician decides to go to war, they must turn control over to the General, who will be happy to turn control back to the Politicians, AFTER VICTORY.
03:33 PM on 08/08/2011
Amen!!! I wish more people (ie. politicians) would understand this. When you fight in a war, fight to win, not to play nice. As MacArthur said "there is no substitute for victory."

Obama has passed our window of oppertunity. The day we killed Bin Laden he should have claimed victory & stated a withdraw. But it's election year & bringing troops home will add to the number looking for the no jobs. Unemployment numbers going up would make him look bad. Polotics over protecting our troops, typical liberals.
