In an article for the Daily Mail, Winehouse's friend Archie Reed tells how the late musician harbored a deep loathing of the (also late) British designer due to some unnamed insult.
Things did not end well, particularly for a certain $24,500 McQueen gown, which McQueen gave Amy as an "I'm sorry" gift:
"When he sent her a dress to say sorry she put it on the barbecue. She also spat on one of his dresses at Selfridges which she had to pay for because she had soiled it. At first she refused then she just said, "Fine -- but tell Alexander McQueen I ruined his dress.'"
The tension between these two volatile personalities is only somewhat surprising, as Winehouse was no slave to high fashion and befriended only select members of the style elite.
One of those elite was Karl Lagerfeld, whom adored the musician's unique aesthetic. In 2007 he declared her his muse and tapped her to perform at next the 2008 Paris store opening for Fendi, of which he is creative director.
Another recipient of Winehouse's fashion affections was Fred Perry, the British retailer with whom she launched a clothing line. Fred Perry announced on Monday that it plans to release the final pair of her collections, for fall 2011 and summer 2012.
