'Dirty Dancing' Remake: Kenny Ortega To Direct

Dirty Dancing

08/ 8/11 09:01 PM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — "Dirty Dancing" is coming back to the big screen.

Lionsgate says it is remaking the 1987 film that starred Jennifer Grey as a naive dance student and Patrick Swayze as her teacher and lover.

The studio said Monday that Kenny Ortega, who choreographed the original film, will direct the remake.

Ortega says he is eager to discover and cast "the next breakout triple-threats" to define dancing for a generation, the way Swayze did in the original "Dirty Dancing."

The chemistry between Patrick Swayze & Jennifer Grey cannot be duplicated on screen, no matter who is cast in the remake!!!!! Now that Patrick Swayze is deceased, redoing Dirty Dancing is a slap in the face to all of his fans who still enjoy his tremendous talent in the array of great films he's left behind. I cannot see a Zac Efron or Vanessa Hughens as Johnny & Baby prancing across the dance floor in the place of Patrick & Jennifer! The remake will be a FLOP, because no one will want to watch it!!! I for one will not!!! Leave well enough & Patrick Swayze's legacy alone!!!! PLEASE!!!!!

I wish there was this much anti-war angst !

NO! I REFUSE! I'M GOING TO START A FRIGGIN WAR! Nothing and I mean NOTHING can replace Dirty Danceing, no remake or no spin off. Mister Kenny Ortega, have you ever herd the saying, "don't try to fix what isn't broke" ??? If anything just update the movie to HD some how. Leave Swazey alone! I swear he is rolling over in his grave right now.

Patrick Swayze can never be remade. No matter who is cast, it won't be as good. Dirty Dancing was perfection, I wouldn't consider watching a remake.

I agree wholeheartedly!!

Dirty Dancing is a classic. No one can capture the aura that enveloped Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey.
08:25 PM on 08/11/2011
Oh come on already; these remakes are getting out of hand already!! Doesn't anyone of these film makers have an original idea?
Dirty Dancing is a classic and cannot be remade without losing its orginal impact.

Like "True Grit" without John Wayne, they may produce a fair movie with a talented cast, but it will never duplicate the magic of the original without the original star.

The Cohen brothers True Grit was vastly superior to the hokey original. But it's hard to think of anyone who could hold a candle to Swayze. Hey, how 'bout Jeff Bridges!

Pick the center square...for the win!

So I guess that means the entire cast will be under 16 years old, no?
11:54 PM on 09/21/2011
Probably just because they are popular and cute they think that will solve the problem but they need some dedicated actors that lose their self in the character instead of these younger kids that are still immature actors!

It is a shame that Chris Farley passed away too. He clearly outdanced Swayze in their SNL dance off and would have done the job perfectly.
07:31 PM on 08/11/2011
Jeez, enough with the remakes already!

Leave these "classics" alone (they may not be classics, but they do not need to be remade) .
Let's see,
Karate Kid (great movie when I was in the 80's)
this (Dirty Dancing)
Halloween
Nightmare of Elm St (okay I'm a horror movie buff)

I've heard they're doing "Revenge of the Nerds."
NO! That was another great movie in the 80's.

What's next?
Field of Dreams
Stand By Me
Shawshank Redemption
Vacation
Can't Buy Me Love (hee-hee...love this movie)
08:28 PM on 08/11/2011
I totally agree!! Lets leave the 80's movies alone!! Like I already said/asked, don't the film makers have any original ideas for movies anymore?!?!?
08:41 PM on 08/11/2011
I'm about to make your day. Can't Buy Me Love already has a cheesy updated version!

Why don't they just dazzle us with a remake of the Breakfast Club, or Farris Beuhler's Day Off? It is a shame that no more originality comes out of HWood. Afterall, what was the top producing industry during the Great Depression? The movie industry. Now it is simply remakes of the same old, same old.

Don't even say that, because they surely will. I won't see it though, I won't. No one can make me.
11:56 PM on 09/21/2011
I'd just die if they remade The breakfast club or any other classic movie, they cant destroy those like that i would hate the day that Disney tried to remake any of these!!

If you have an original thought, forget it right away. I am only interested in recycled concepts with a modern 'spin'.... remindes me of my the guy that tries to tell you about the great joke he just can't quite remember... man you should have heard... it was something like...the punchline was, ummmm... yea, its not the same. dont waste my time.

Is this the result of writers with no creativity or studios not willing to take risks on something not already proven to be successful?

Kenny Ortega is a great choreographer, but this is an adult movie. Since I've only seen him do "High School Musical", I sincerely doubt he can pull off directing an adult script
