China-based Huawei Technologies on Monday released a video showing off its new Vision smartphone.
Under the hood, Vision runs on Android's Gingerbread operating system and a 1GHz processor, according to Huawei's announcement of the device. The Vision handset, which measures 9.9 millimeters at its thinnest, sports a 3.7 inch touchscreen and weighs a total of 121 grams, said the press release.
Does Huawei's latest look familiar? ZDNET notes that the Vision looks like an Android device already on the market: "The first thing you are likely to notice about Huawei’s new Vision phone is how much it looks like Samsung’s Nexus S. Same rounded edges, same four buttons below the screen, same general feel." Likewise, GSM Arena says that the Vision "looks akin to an HTC Legend crossed with a Nexus S [with] hardware similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S".
What sets the Vision apart from its Android brethren is its "complete 3D interface," a home panel that displays menus and apps as if they were three-dimensional objects arranged on a tabletop. Hauwei claims that its user interface will make the phone easier to navigate. "The interface allows you to select any panel of the home screen with one easy swipe and makes it easy to prioritize the application view to suit your needs," the company's press release states.
The Huawei Vision will be available in "selected markets" starting September 2011. (See slideshow below for a look at the Vision.)
Earlier this summer, Huawei took the wraps off its upcoming Media Pad, a 7-inch Android tablet that is expected to hit stores in the United States during the third quarter of 2011. The device will run a new version of Android's Honeycomb software, optimized for 7-inch tablets, among other competitive features.
Huawei Technologies, sometimes called China's quiet tech giant, is quickly becoming one of the world's leading telecom-hardware manufacturers. According to The Wall Street Journal, Huawei sold 7 million mobile devices in the first quarter of 2011 and is expecting to sell 60 million mobile phones (20 million of which will likely be Android smartphones) by year-end. By comparison, Apple sold 20.34 million iPhones and 9.25 million iPads during its third quarter of 2011.
