On Sunday, Dead heads took over McLaren Park for the 9th annual Jerry Day to honor the late Jerry Garcia, founder and frontman of the Grateful Dead.

The festival, a fundraiser for a neighboring Excelsior District playground, brought together bands Melvin Seals and JGB, Poor Man's Whiskey, Front Street and Friends and The Fall Risk for an all-day jam session in the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater.

Mayor Ed Lee, who announced his candidacy on Monday, opened the event with a proclamation, and the show was broadcast via live webcam throughout the country.

Organizers sold food, arts and crafts, and accepted donations for the foundation, but, as always, admission was free. Local free-love lovers danced, partied and honored the late, great Garcia, who would have turned 69 on August 1.
