Charles Wyly, Texas Billionaire And Political Donor, Killed In Aspen Car Wreck

Wyly

DALLAS -- Texas billionaire and philanthropist Charles Wyly, whose family donated millions of dollars to Republican causes and Dallas arts projects, has died after a car accident in western Colorado, authorities said. He was 77.

Wyly, who maintained a home near Aspen, Colo., was turning onto a highway near the local airport when his Porsche was hit by a sport utility vehicle Sunday, the Colorado State Patrol said in a statement. Wyly died at Aspen Valley Hospital.

"He is among the finest people I have ever known," William Brewer III, Wyly's attorney and long-time friend, said in a statement to The Associated Press. "His contributions in business, philanthropy and civic leadership will forever be remembered."

The other driver suffered moderate injuries.

In Texas, Wyly and his younger brother, Sam, along with their wives, gave $20 million to help build Dallas' performing arts center. They also donated big, but quietly, to Republican causes: the brothers had said they'd given about $10 million to GOP candidates and causes since the 1970s.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry was one of the biggest political beneficiaries, receiving more than $300,000 combined from the Wylys since 2000, according to Texas Ethics Commission reports. According to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, the brothers had donated almost $2.5 million to more than 200 Republican candidates and committees at the federal level over the past two decades.

Last summer, the Securities and Exchange Commission accused Wyly and his brother of using offshore havens to hide more than a half-billion dollars in profits over 13 years of insider stock trading. The brothers denied and were fighting the allegations.

Born during the Great Depression, Charles Wyly was a child when the collapsed economy forced the surrender of his family's cotton farm in Lake Providence, La. He and his younger brother went on to attend Louisiana Tech University in the 1950s, then went to work for IBM.

Charles Wyly helped his brother run their startup computer software company, University Computing, and later founded and led several other companies including arts and crafts retail chain Michaels Stores Inc., which was sold in 2006. He also was a former member of a White House Advisory Council for Management Improvement.

Leaders of the Dallas arts community were stunned by news of Charles Wyly's death. Bill Lively, who launched the 2000 campaign to build the $345 million performing arts center in Dallas, told the Dallas Morning News that Wyly was "a critically important force." The complex has a theater named after Wyly.

"He was always positive," Lively said. "He was always optimistic."

Robyn Flatt, executive artistic director of the Dallas Children's Theater, said Wyly was a good friend who made "immeasurable" contributions to the Dallas arts scene.

"He was a true friend of the arts and our community, a friend who truly cared and who truly made a difference," Flatt told the Morning News.

More proof that the rich are big business corporate. That's how they got that way, and of course, that is why they favor Republicans.

Republicans give to corporations, Democrats give to the people. End of statement.

But...But... I don't understand. If conservatives give so much to charity, like they're always saying, then why would he use an off-shore tax haven???

Prolly just sending his money sight-seeing. Those hard-working funds do so need a break sometimes.

300k to a single candidate, definitely proof campaign finance reform is in order.

I wouldn't be so certain Charlie left a grieving family. It has been my experience in accounting for heirs of mere multi-millionaires that it is very rare for the family to "grieve" for dear old dad. The single charge of his having donated to the Swift-Boaters tells exactly what kind of man he was.

The fact that he donated to the arts is not unique: Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz was a patron of the arts in that he had an enormous and very valuable collection of art works his curator hauled all over the word; recently Alice Walton, WalMart heir, spent over $20 million in a short day at Sotheby's for art; William Koch, brother of David and Charles Koch, spent $1.8 million for a tin type of the Texas outlaw, Billy the Kid. Only today, I learned that hedge fund manager John Paulson in 2010 alone earned $4.9 billion, that is billion with a B for one man for one year. His tax rate for the qualifying amount was 15 percent.

Since the early 1990s, top HMO executives have been taking annual compensations in the hundreds of millions -- each -- and in my office this unbridled greed was certainly understood to effect health care costs in an extremely negative way.

No, sorry. This family will not get my prayers. I don't believe they will need them to recover from this "great loss."

I guess the headline, stating that he was a GOP donor was meant to attract the multitudes of Godless leftists and have succeeded!
It's actually a teaching moment, however; no matter who you are, life is relatively short and liberals should stop worrying so much about who's rich and who's poor. Who's got healthcare and who doesn't (class warfare) The most important thing is getting right with God because eternity is a long time and life on earth is just preparation for it. That's why you see so many poor minorities, having a good time at a family barbecue, while at the same time, you have rich, white liberals, who always seem to be enraged at everything and think that they're helping the minorities, when THEY'RE the ones that need help!

There is no proof whatsoever, how could there be? Dead is dead. Even the bible says so. The bible says the punishment for not believing in Jesus is the ABSENCE of life after death, not hell. so even the bible is half right. But, whatever helps people get up in the morning and not retreat into a catatonic state thinking about the fact that one day soon they will cease to exist. Atheists are the most hardy of souls to not need the crutch of some paradise to make it through the minutes, hours and days of our lives.

Good point except for worrying about "who has healthcare and who doesn't". For every Billionaire who dies young accidentally, tens of thousands of middle-class Americans die because they can't get healthcare, can't afford healthcare or because some adjuster decides not to approve a needed medical procedure because it would erode the HMO's profits.

Not all Liberals are rich or white. Some of us are Patriotic Americans who recognize injustice when we see it.

Here is the 78 page complaint filed against Mr. Wyly and his co-defendants. It will proceed with or without him. This is why he was able to support the arts and buy political influence in the GOP. Thanks for the art, but the "cheat to win", not so much.

I printed it, all 78 pages. I intend to read it all and then save it for historical references, just in case anyone is considering a revision of this man's history.

You do realize that someone is innocent until proven guilty. It has taken the Government six years to file charges. They tried criminal charges but couldn't come up with anything. So, now they are trying a civil case - which the SEC has offered to settle - and was rejected by the Wyly's.

I cannot believe that you liberals can be so hateful. Remember, "what goes around comes around" It matters not how much money he had. He was someone's son, father, grandfather and close friend. He was human. It doesn't matter what party he belonged to or helped. I don't understand why you liberals always have to name call. I guess you would not feel the same way if it were Al Gore or another rich Democrat that died.

Oh boo hoo hoo - I'm not excusing people on this board for being so hateful, but I am very willing to bet that if I were to go to a conservative website that the ration of hateful comments would be far greater. Remember this sign, printed by ORGANIZED conservatives?

And that is just scratching the surface. I'll keep going if you want.

This is hilarious. The venom thrown by you democrats at a man you did not even know. Just because he was a republican, gave money to art, donated money and was ....OH MY GOD....Rich...I think you people are just living off your little government handouts and are jealous of anyone who does good in life. The man came from a cotton farm in Louisiana and got rich. Doesn't that just piss your "done nothing with my life" ass off. You my good people are the ones who have caused most of the problems with my country....go get your welfare cheese and peanut butter....stand by the mailbox waiting on your welfare check and keep pretending that your smarter than everyone elso. Bunch of damn leaches.
10:05 PM on 08/08/2011
That's part of the problem right there, you think you own the country if you do have money.Nice try. You don't even own the money that you have. I'm liberal and I've worked my ass off my whole life,so there goes your genius theory about what liberals are. I just happen to know right from wrong.I know some conservatives that are good people but you don't sound like one of them.
