World Trade Center Steel On Display In Denver (UPDATE)

Sixteen pieces of steel from the World Trade Center will be on display for public viewing at Denver's Civic Center Park, Monday, according to The Denver Post.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock announced that the Beach Boys will play a free concert at Denver's Civic Center Park to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, according to CBSDenver. Hancock and Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia revealed that the band would play while pieces of World Trade Center steel were on display this morning in Denver. According to The Denver Post, Hancock had this to say about the Beach Boys at this morning's event:

You can't get more American than that. Doesn't that sound awesome?

Approximately 100 people turned out to see the 16 pieces of twisted steel, CBSDenver reported.

Fox31 reports that the more than 200,000 pounds of steel are on display between 10:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., then from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m., the twisted metal will be briefly on display at Sloan’s Lake.

At Denver’s Civic Center Park event, Mayor Hancock and Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia will announce details of a Colorado event to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, according to 7News. The plans include a free concert in the Civic Center Park with as yet unnamed musicians. The event will be hosted by Gov. John Hickenlooper.

9News reports that the pieces of steel will become part of memorials at Babi Yar Park and the Counterterroism Education Learning Lab (CELL), a permanent multimedia exhibit in Denver. Eventually, 15 communities in Colorado will receive pieces of beams, including Aurora, Brighton, Colorado Springs, Durango, Frisco, Grand Junction and Lousiville, according to The Denver Post.
