A North Carolina couple charged in the death of a North Carolina mom whose dismembered body was discovered in Texas in July were indicted on murder charges Monday, court documents show.

Grant R. Hayes III, 32, the ex-boyfriend of slain 27-year-old Laura Jean Ackerson and the father of her two young children was indicted for her murder alongside his wife, 39-year-old Amanda Perry Hayes in Raleigh. The two allegedly killed Ackerson on July 13, cut up her body, and transported the remains cross-country, scattering them across several locations.

Investigators believe the pair used coolers and a rented U-Haul to drive Ackerson's dismembered remains from North Carolina to Texas, where they were discovered on July 24. Her severed limbs were discovered in a creek south of Houston, Eastern North Carolina Today reported.

Ackerson and Hayes had been locked in a bitter custody battle over their two young sons prior to her disappearance. Hayes, a musician, is alleged to have written a song in which he describes Ackerson's death, ABC News reported.

Ackerson was last seen on July 13, when she dropped off her kids at the Hayes home. She was reported missing two days later when she failed to show up for work. On July 20, Ackerson's Ford Focus was found abandoned near the 5400 block of Summer Manor Lane in Raleigh.

Ackerson's dismembered remains were found in three separate locations near Richmond, Texas. Police reported recovering several items from the nearby home of Amanda Hayes' sister, including machete.
