London Riots: BlackBerry Messenger Service Should Be Suspended, MP David Lammy Reportedly Says (UPDATE) (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/09/11 10:39 AM ET Updated: 10/09/11 06:12 AM ET

London riots entered their third night on Monday, reportedly prompting Tottenham MP David Lammy to call for the suspension of the BlackBerry Messenger service some rioters are using to organize their movements. As Sky News reported:

@ SkyNewsBreak : Tottenham MP David Lammy calls on Blackberry to suspend its messaging service in attempt to stop rioters communicating.

The nearly free, non-public BBM service is credited with allowing the rioters to coordinate movements. As ABC reports, the service is popular among young Brits, who referred repeatedly to the service on Twitter over the weekend. "The news ain't even showing the extent of what's actually happening on the streets of tottenham? BBM is doing da ting right now!" read one tweet, according to ABC.

Explaining the appeal of the service for the rioters, blogger Jonathan Akwue wrote, "BBM, as it is known, is an instant messenger system that has become popular for three main reasons: it's fast (naturally), it's virtually free, and unlike Twitter or Facebook, it's private." Unlike Facebook and Twitter, which have received accolades for their roles in recent uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa, BBM, which allows users to share messages by exchanging PINs, is not a public forum. "The key point here is that although these messages are spreading virally, by being shared via BBM they have been less visible to the outside world, making them harder to track," Akwue noted.

Research in Motion, the manufacturer of BlackBerry phones, released the following statement after reports of rioters using BBM began to appear:

"We feel for those impacted by this weekend's riots in London. We have engaged with the authorities to assist in any way we can. As in all markets around the world where BlackBerry is available, we cooperate with local telecommunications operators, law enforcement and regulatory officials."

According to TechCrunch Europe, as much as 37 percent of 16-24 year olds and 37 percent of 12-15 year olds prefer BlackBerry over iPhones "precisely because of the free BlackBerry messenger service."

UPDATE: Apparently in response to RIM's statement that it will cooperate with the police, hackers have targeted Inside BlackBerry, the official BlackBerry blog, PC Advisor reports. This site, which does not seem to be working at this time, read:

Dear Rim; You Will _NOT_ assist the UK Police because if u do innocent members of the public who were at the wrong place at the wrong time and owned a blackberry will get charged for no reason at all, the Police are looking to arrest as many people as possible to save themselves from embarrassment…. if you do assist the police by giving them chat logs, gps locations, customer information & access to peoples BlackBerryMessengers you will regret it, we have access to your database which includes your employees information; e.g – Addresses, Names, Phone Numbers etc. – now if u assist the police, we _WILL_ make this information public and pass it onto rioters…. do you really want a bunch of angry youths on your employees doorsteps? Think about it…. and don't think that the police will protect your employees, the police can't protect themselves let alone protect others….. if you make the wrong choice your database will be made public, save yourself the embarrassment and make the right choice. don't be a puppet.

A group calling itself Team Poison appeared to be taking responsibility for the hack. The group posted on Twitter:

@ TeaMp0isoN_ : This hack took less then 5mins, very very embarrasing for the company and the feds

The Telegraph reports that accounts that the service will be shut down are false.

As horrible as the riots are, this is not a good precedent.

No Wonder the BlackBerry company is going downhill worldwide. And they wonder why BlackBerry is losing Market share to Apple and other Major Smart phone devices, hahaha.

Gun control at it's finest. They've had 4 night's of rioting and no self defense ? The citzens can't all be sleeping through this activity. You would think it was taking place, on an island in Norway.

You're condoning all-out lawlessness, but you're aware of that.

That would really help law-enforcement - armed citizens mingling with looters and rioters, plain-clothes, no differentiating or distinguishing differences between either group. All out anarchy is bad enough without adding armed vigilante mobs into the mix.

No, I'm condoning no such thing. The police are out numbered and people are unable to defend themselves nor properties and places of business. The anarchy taking place at present, is out of control. Arresting 160 terrorist (that is what they are), is commendable. Given the PM's policies and having expected some backlash, why were there no precautions in place before leaving on vacation ? This is not a civil disobedience. It's terrorism and the people are defenseless.

There have been many riots in the US and the US has been armed to the teeth forever. Has citizens being armed ever stopped or even shortened a riot. Nope! Your premise is not backed up by any facts. Generally, shopowners that chose to defend their stores end up injured or in jail for injuring someone else.

Sounds like some hackers are threatening people and employees - against the law so shut down and arrest those with blackberries, run a check on their ID access and then charge those who urged the rioting to continue ane helped escalate

I don't know what started the rioting, some posts refer to a shooting by a cop of a youth. Doesn't matter. these rioters were hoodlums. I can't believe officials let them rampage, destroying public and private property. These acts are inexcusably criminal, and the perpetrators should be jailed. Innocent citizens were victimized for no reason.

I don't know if you've been following these events, but the 'officials' are slightly outnumbered.
05:59 PM on 08/09/2011
I think it is more like the officials are a bit late to respond. Haven't they seen what happened in France and how easy it is for these things to escalate?

right wing there starts messing with people's jobs, pensions and stuff..heck they do that here all the time and we go quietly to our cubicles, afraid of our riot police in jack boots.

Yes, these people are having a hard time financially, but they can somehow afford expensive Blackberry service.

Another clueless American chimes in. They don't pay anything near what we do for the service. For many it's their only means of communicating. How else do they look for jobs???

Those hackers don't seem too bright. I'm assuming the RIM employees they speak of are the ones working and living in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. If the "angry youth" tried anything in Canada the way they are attacking London, you'd probably see them dominated as they were during the G20 riots. Then they'll all cry to their lawyers about how they were maltreated. Today's "angry youth" are a bunch of misdirected hooligans who don't know how to achieve change. Their impatience causes them to act out violently. Grow up.

So Apple, Android, and other platforms in use are still in operation?

Why not turn off all the cell towers and internet in general?  Go all the way in stopping the riots, and did all of this start via one act of police brutality or something more fundamental?  4 days due to one comparatively small incident seems a little difficult to believe at this point...

At what expense?
The 'land-line' is all but obsolete. Without communication, without a way to report emergencies or crimes not related to rioting, even more chaos would ensue.
Cutting communication entirely would be overkill.

If egyptians use instant messaging to coordinate the revolution, the west applauds them. If Londoners use it, the West wants IM shut off.

Maybe you should.  Why did you allow the value of your labor to drop so much?  And by allowing that, the labor of your fellow citizens, you know - all those (not lazy but let's call them such despite politicians giving tax money to companies as a reward for offshoring but I digress) people, goes down as well.

lol I was being a bit facetious. I do have a cell phone, but it's about priorities. I could conceivably afford a Blackberry but other things are more important, like paying for daycare, etc.
My point was the rioters are being portrayed as poor people, yet many of them can afford Blackberrys, which are not cheap and have a high monthly cost. So either the media is lying (not unusual) or it's an example of how far out of whack peoples' priorities are. One could say the same of many people in America, too.
