Claire McCaskill Comes Out Against Further Unemployment Benefits [UPDATE]

First Posted: 08/10/11 01:20 PM ET Updated: 10/10/11 06:12 AM ET

During a Tuesday visit to a factory in St. Charles, Mo., Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill said she opposed extending federal unemployment benefits.

"I'm not for extending the unemployment benefits any further," McCaskill said in response to a question from local TV station KMOV before saying she would support a continued payroll tax cut.

It's not clear from McCaskill's statement whether she is opposed to giving the unemployed additional weeks of benefits or if she opposes renewing the existing extra weeks of aid. Members of Congress have frequently been confused on unemployment legislation. McCaskill's office did not immediately respond to a request for clarification.

[UPDATE: McCaskill's office says additional context omitted from KMOV's report would show that she was responding to a question about giving the unemployed extra weeks of benefits. Her office said she supports preserving the existing extended benefits.

"Claire continues to fully support unemployment benefits for people who have lost their jobs by no fault of their own as a result of the struggling economy. This includes up to 99 weeks of unemployment benefits. Unfortunately, expanding benefits beyond 99 weeks -- as some suggest -- is unaffordable and unrealistic because of staunch opposition in the House."]

Further extensions of unemployment insurance for the long-term jobless will need all the congressional support they can get. The federal benefits, which can last up to 73 weeks for workers who exhaust the standard 26 weeks of state benefits, are scheduled to expire at the beginning of 2012. Republicans oppose keeping the benefits because of their significant cost to the government -- as much as $60 billion a year.

President Obama has said he wants Congress to reauthorize the benefits and also a Social Security payroll tax cut, both of which were included in a December deal that preserved Bush-era tax cuts for two years. The unemployment benefits were included in the failed so-called Grand Bargain Obama crafted with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), but they were left out of the debt deal Congress passed earlier this month.

Under current law, people who've lost their jobs after July 1 are ineligible for extra weeks of benefits because their state aid will run out after the federal benefits expire in January. Nearly 4 million unemployed currently receive federal benefits.

McCaskill said she supported keeping the tax cuts: "The payroll tax cuts -- I'm always for tax cuts for working folks because I think that helps our consuming economy."

The progressive Economic Policy Institute has estimated that dropping the payroll tax cut and the extended unemployment insurance as planned in 2012 would cost the economy more than a million jobs next year, as the two policies are rated by economists as among the most stimulative.

coming from a woman who's husband sucked the government teat for $89,000 for his private charter airline business. Just another terrible democrat that needs to go.

people deserve to live. Corporations are not people (lets see them stand on one leg and jump up and down) Cut the S#%^ out of corporate welfare and tax havens for corporations.

Here is my reasoning. A company with an actual business plan will be profitable and plenty profitable from their own merits and standards and services or goods. a company that needs subsidies is a company that is ran poorly, thus should be shut down and another person with the ability to manage finances better will take their place if there is a demand.

Get real! If someone cannot find a job in 100 weeks, they are NOT GOING TO, and THEY ARE NOT TRYING TO.

I would LOVE 100 weeks of unemployment!

You are sadly mistaken. I was laid off in November 2009. I was 62 years old then. I was an engineer in video postproduction making over six figures. I look for work every day but am up against many younger people vying for the same few jobs. In these many months I've had two interviews. Most of my resumes go out unanswered.

Please try not to generalize. It isn't the breezy vacation you seem to think it is.

Hey try it. Today's just as good a day as any. Go to work get fired or laid off. If you're then eligible for benefits , you're well on your way to your pursuit of happiness and a shot at that once upon a time American Dream. BTW if you're in the state of TX weekly max is a big whopping $415 - heard it's not bad compared to other states.

Now remember the lower your last income was the lower your compensation's gonna be and even those who made six figures around these parts ain't getting no more than the $415. Isn't that lovely? But this is what you're really going to love, playing the mismatch game on how to pay dollar bills with penny change. As I said, it's a mixed matched game and monopoly money don't count. Be careful now you may actually fool around and fall in love.

I know, sometimes thoughts are faster than the fingers. If we only had a backspace key for those times

Of course. I get it. Cutting off their unemployment will force them to go get jobs. Wow! That's brilliant and so simple. Really SIMPLE.

sure, and it would be much better to have a JOBS program to employ these folks than to pay them to do nothing.

We need a new Conservation Corps to rebuild US infrastructure. With 50 million out of work, it's a no brainer.

It's a catch 22-- like all welfare, some take advantage and some are just disadvantaged. I've known people, personally, who have sat around making virtually no attempt to get employment because they are young, single, childless, and can live off their unemployment. My mother-in-law, however, is old, missing teeth and has restrictions on the amount of weight she can lift-- she applies constantly for jobs and wants to work, but she is NOT an appealing candidate. Her unemployment has run out, but she is luckier than some in that she has friends and family who can help her while she tirelessly continues her search.

You know what, HuffPo? This is the worst, most misleading headline you've ever annointed a story with. I hope someday you will see the benefits of presenting headlines that indicate the head writer actually read the whole story. At the very least, it's extremely unprofessional.
02:09 PM on 08/11/2011
My beef with HuffPost is the hysteria in their headlines prompting the naive and unsuspecting to believe that McCaskill is against unemployment insurance. She was against extending beyond 99 weeks, which is the position of many Democrats as well. SHAME on HuffPost!

Claire McCaskill has always had regular people on her agenda. She is a middle of the road politician that votes as her constituents voted her into office to do. She works across party lines for the betterment of the country. Ya just can't find many of those kinds these days. Look at Collins, Snowe, Brown, all voted the way the chinless wonder ordered them to. They no longer have my support.

Claire has been RIGHT of the road many times. In fact, when you think she could be counted on for a vote, she voted to the RIGHT.

No, if anything McCaskill has shown herself to be a Blu edog in critical votes and the next vote she would vote as a Dem.

She's from Missouri. Missouri is bright red outside of St. Louis and Kansas City. If you expect a Dem to be anything other than blue dog from Missouri, you're being unrealistic. Not only can liberal Dems not WIN re-election in Missouri, they can't GET elected in the first place.

These are just the facts. If you've ever lived in Missouri, you know what I mean.

Up until three months ago, I lived in Missouri. McCackill is far from middle of the road. She really just needs to switch to the Republican Party. Her idea of working across party lines is to work with some of the most conservative Republicans on legislation that hurt the country.
