No Diversity On CNN's New Lineup

Cindy Y. Rodriguez   First Posted: 08/10/11 08:14 PM ET   Updated: 10/10/11 06:12 AM ET

While reading CNN's new lineup it was pretty apparent what was missing: a Latino anchor. Well, more like any minority anchor. The United States is becoming a 'minority-majority' nation with the highest minority population being Latinos.
According to the 2010 Census, Latinos represent 16.3 percent of the U.S. population. By 2050, the Census estimates that 62% are expected to be of a minority ethnicity, up from 44% today. Approximately 39% are projected to be Hispanic or Latino. The numbers speak volumes.

When the lineup came out in July, the NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous sent out a press release clearly disappointed by CNN's decision:

"The NAACP is deeply concerned with the lack of African-American journalists in prime-time news, both on cable and national network news shows... from W.E.B. Du Bois to Ed Bradley, the NAACP feels it is critical to bring this disparity, and the broader trend reflected in the overall lack of people of color as prime-time news anchors, to the attention of the top officials at all of the major broadcast and cable news stations."

It is important to have anchors that reflect their audience. If local stations see the need for minority television anchors and reporters, why not CNN? It doesn't add up. Anchors like Darlene Rodriguez (of WNBC's Channel 4 in New York) or Laura Diaz (of CBS2's in Los Angeles) could have been a contender. Not to mention the eight Spanish-speaking anchors and reporters CNN has at their disposal.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists President Michele Salcedo, had some opinions of her own on the matter.

I think CNN is missing an opportunity in their new evening lineup. It doesn't reflect the increasing numbers of Latinos that are in their potential audience. There's a reason that Spanish language newscasts are consistently No. 1 in major markets throughout the country--they're providing news of interest to Latinos, regardless of whether those viewers are Spanish-language dominant or English-language dominant.

The CNN lineup doesn't reflect the nation's changing demographics of the United States. As long as Latinos are not represented on television and cable networks their views won't be a part of the American dialogue.

If you had a say on choosing an anchor, who would you want? Vote below.

Natalie Morales

I'm a WASP, which means I couldn't be any more of a vato blanco (white dude) if I wanted to be. That said, I wish there was *MORE* hispanics, blacks, and overall non-whites on television than there already are. CNN sorta gets it but they are severely lacking in the Latina department. I think Soledad O'Brien is the only one they have right now.... it's like the whole TV is whitewashed.

For example, Fox News' broadcasters are approximately 90% blonde women. Do they really think all us guys--especially the white dudes--want to see is blondes?! Hell no!

I want...no....need a hot-blooded, dark-skinned Latina with an accent and/or a voluptuous southern Black woman with some soul in her voice when I hear the news--not some Nordic goddess blondie who looks like every other blonde from LA I see. Please. I want a woman with some curves, a brain, a tan, and some spice in her voice.

Oh, and as far as male anchors, well....I guess if you've gotta be equal so be it. ;-)

I wonder if the news agencies in Mexico are concerned that they have an even amount of white anchors on their staff.

Probably not.

I still sort of like CNN. Especially since they fired Rick Sanchez! He used to be a local anchor where I live. Every time the news would come on my dog would vomit!

CNN is also running advertisements for FOX news. What is going on? Did Rupert buy CNN or are they so desperate they'd even sell their mother? Bad CNN!

CNN has been on a downward spiral for years. When a network hires Erick Erickson, and not have a Latino on board, you automatically know something is amiss when they provide him with a national platform for his craziness. No longer do they live up to the "most trusted news" mantra. Not only are some of their hirings of on-air personnel suspect, the quality of their reporting is as well. They don't have much diversity because they don't have to, and there is nothing to hold them accountable for their hiring practices.

It is not a fluke of nature that capable minorities aren't If they based their hiring totally on merit, a whole lot of those people they have now would be out of a job. That's a bunch of BS. But they can trot out people like Wolfe Blitzer, and that's just incredulous.

Ever since Ted sold it to Time/Warner I think it was. I remember, it went off on Friday still Ted's and came back on Monday as Time/Warner and you could already smell the rot. Haven't watched it since.

I do not find CNN reporting reputable on any level; therefore, I would prefer Jorge Ramos, Natalie Morales and Maria Elena Salinas never accept a position with CNN. Reputable journalists are too hard to find these days and network and cable do their utmost to compromise the credentials of their anchors.

To all of the jerks (knee) that say CNN and any other network uses merit to pick a line up wake up!
03:55 PM on 08/13/2011
So CNN chose based on merit, and that is a bad thing? Since when is diversity required of a news network. Isn't their job to report on the news and separately to have shows expressing certain opinions. There are plenty of alternative realms where one can get their news. It is high time people get over forcing "equality" down the throats of corporations. Let people earn their jobs.

Shouldn't companies be hiring the people best able to do the job instead of hiring based on skin color? Why does the nfl, nba and mlb get to hire based on ability but cnn can't?
