Lynne Gravier, Woman Who Fed Bears, Won't Go To Jail

08/10/11 06:37 PM ET   AP

UKIAH, Calif. -- A woman who turned her rural Northern California home into a spa for wild bears won't go to jail after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of feeding big game.

Gravier, 77, known as the "Bear Woman," set up a plush hangout for her furry friends at her 40-acre Laytonville property, complete with a kiddie pool and a buffet of cornmeal and peanut butter sandwiches, sometimes laced with glucosamine to ease the arthritis pain in older bears.

Authorities who raided the property in response to neighbor complaints last August found a total of 15 black bears who regularly relaxed inside Gravier's house and on her deck. She also fed 18 cats, three dogs, 40 peacocks and other wildlife out of her home, which was covered in filth.

California Department of Fish and Game wardens called it the worst example of bear feeding they had ever encountered.

Gravier's supporters protested her prosecution, defending her as an animal lover. But neighbors complained that she drew in bears that terrorized the community by breaking into homes, ransacking feed sheds and chasing livestock.

"This lady may have thought she was doing a good thing," Mendocino County District Attorney David Eyster told the Chronicle. "We don't want to bash her, but we have to get her attention and get her to recognize that her feeding the bears was causing a problem for the neighbors and, frankly, is dangerous."

Under the terms set by prosecutors, Gravier may not return to her Laytonville property. The house was condemned last year.

"The end result to me was very positive," Gravier said. "I'm glad that it is over and I can go on."

Some people think wild animals are just public pets. This is the real world, not a cartoon!

She's pretty lucky she didn't get eaten. Anyone who houses wild animals in their homes deserves what might happen to them.

This lady is danger to herself and neighbors. She's ready for a different kind of spa.

well, i love people who love animals. i really think they should have set her up with an animal behavior specialist who could have shown her how to wean the animals off of their dependence, which is probably what she was worried about when they told her to quit feeding. condemning the house is unreasonable. unless she has kids, who cares what the place looks like.

How about a little compassion for the poor woman. She is elderly and obviously in need of some help. This situation was destined to end badly for both her and the bears. I think a positive outlook for the bears is still in doubt. Maybe if the woman had gotten help when she first started feeding the bears things would not have gotten out of hand. If she was known as the "Bear Woman" she had obviously been feeding them for quite some time. Most people that do this live alone. It's human instinct to love and want to be loved. In her little world she thought she was doing the right thing. Of course it was a terribly wrong thing to do. I think it was a symptom of other things going wrong in her life. When people are caught up in such situations they don't realize they need help. It usually takes a family member, a friend or a neighbor to step in. That didn't happen here. Now you have an elderly person evicted from their property and some bears that think humans are really cool.

While she certainly meant well....(and just how do you figure the dosage of glucosamine for bears?) she really was endangering her neighbors and making these bears depend on humans for their source of meals. This could have ended tragically for either the bear(s) or the humans. I feel sorry for the woman, as she didn't seem to mean any harm. I hope she gets some help though....

People have to realize that wild things should not be fed. We have that same problem here in Florida. Tourist come and throw things to the gators. They leave and the next person in that area, maybe having a picnic, and soon there is a gator there taking off the kid's arm thinking it has food for them. It happens more times than you know. DO NOT FEED WILD THINGS IT IS DANGEROUS

Seen a bear drink a jug of moonshine, and eat 4 dozen hard boiled eggs once,......it wasn't pretty!

It was all a mis under standing the doctors told her to walk around in her house bare to give her skin more fresh air. She thought let the bears walk around her house.

I suppose she should have bought a mule or two as well. Bear Ass Nekkid.

Incredible!! I do believe that common sense was not a factor in this crazy equation. What the heck was she thinking? They are cute from a distance, but they are flea ridden, and stink! Why would u move 15 of them into ur house? And feed them peanut butter? It messes up their biological clocks, could be fatal for the host, and permanently screws up the house. This lady needs to be medicated.

As I read the article, the woman set up a "feeding station" outside for the bears, *AT* her home, in a kiddie tub (I'd assume outside) and didn't invite them into her home. The state of her home was a totally different issue.

Although I could be wrong, as this little news blurb leaves much to the imagination. :)

won't be going to jail for what she did- sounds like California.

I like bears. But if you start feeding them, you better not try to stop!

15 bears in her house...I guess that answers the age-old question, does a wild bear poop in the bathroom? And if so, does it read the Wall Street Journal while seated?
12:51 AM on 08/11/2011
The "Charmin Bears" do.

And they wipe their rears with the pages, as well.

More like "15 well-fed bears in the backyard. Watch your step. This isn't *doggie doo* we're dealing with here, people."
