Rachel Maddow: Rick Perry May Be The Face Of A Christian Movement Seeking Political Domination (VIDEO)

Rachel Maddow

First Posted: 08/11/11 10:20 AM ET Updated: 10/11/11 06:12 AM ET

Rachel Maddow raised concerns on her Wednesday show that Texas Gov. Rick Perry may be the face of a shadowy group of bizarre Christian conservatives seeking to infiltrate the government.

True, it all sounds a little "Da Vinci Code," but Maddow's case came from a lengthy article in the Texas Observer that discussed the connection between Perry--who is due to jump into the GOP presidential race on Sunday--and a movement called the New Apostolic Reformation.

In the Observer's words:

The new prophets and apostles believe Christians--certain Christians--are destined to not just take "dominion" over government, but stealthily climb to the commanding heights of what they term the "Seven Mountains" of society, including the media and the arts and entertainment world. They believe they're intended to lord over it all. As a first step, they're leading an "army of God" to commandeer civilian government.

Perry's recent (and controversial) Houston prayer event was endorsed by many of the members of the movement. Maddow played several minutes of clips of some of the leading members of the group. Subjects discussed included Oprah's status as the Antichrist, the Emperor of Japan's misconduct with a "sun goddess," and Hitler's fondness for gay soldiers.

Maddow quoted from the Observer article, which reports that Perry met with a group of New Apostolic Movement preachers in 2009, where they told him that he had a crucial role to play in their plans.

Perry, she said, had just held a prayer event with "a specific Christian political movement...that seems to want a Rick Perry candidacy to be their political vehicle."

Wow. I would have expected this from Glenn Beck with his magical mystery chalkboard of conspiracy. But I would not have expected it from Rachel Maddow.

Rachel didn't make it up or speculate she quoted from the local newspaper and most of what was said is directly quoted from the horses mouth. Spooky isn't it?

She didn't make up the quotes, but the conclusion she drew from them (that Rick Perry is a sleeper agent for religious extremists) is preposterous. He is quite conservative, yes, but he's not a fanatic like those people.

People who think of God as a "Lord"/Ruler and not a wise, patient creator
whose works must be constantly contemplated, are basically, faithless and immature.

They have no real God, or any faith, at all.

Spiritual detritus.

Yer right. An important thing is continued control of the Supreme Court. That way liberals can continue to propose ideas through their favorite channel, litigation, and the Court will reject the bad ones.

I only take issue with Rachel on this one thing...she needs to make clear that this is a Christian splinter group and not mainstream Christianity. It doesn't matter how large it is or how fast it is growing, it does not represent the teachings of Jesus.

If this was the film "It's a Wonderful Life" these people would be attending Mr. Potter's church.

I'll believe it's not mainstream Christians if mainstream Christians don't vote for him. Otherwise, it's just talk.

It's not the Christians that you mockers of the Faith need to fear...it's the One who has the power and authority to assign your soul to the fiery pit for all eternity! It is mind boggling that anyone could be so flippant about their final destination--which should be a much bigger issue than who gets elected president in 2012.

Ha ha - so amusing when one of the "faithful" doesn't even understand his own little mythology, that "God is love." Or maybe that's one of your thousands of other factions that also claim to know the "truth:"

Yep. The "Christian Political Domination" has been so bad in Texas, that we can't stop people from moving here! So many have moved here, in fact, that they make you show your "CC" card (Church Cred) before they even let you in the state!

here is a a response from the NY Times:
Wedding ring is in for repairs ????

Another piece falls into place. In a press conference last week Obama was not
wearing his wedding ring nor was he wearing his watch. When noticed, his staff
said his ring was out for repairs. No reason was given for the missing watch.

So it's just a coincidence that Muslims are forbidden from wearing jewelry during
the month of Ramadan. Can't possibly be that, because although he hasn't gone
to a Christian church service since entering the White House, we know he's a
committed Christian "cause he said so during his campaign!"
...........And I've got a bridge to nowhere to sell you also.

This is the same president that spent the Christmas holidays in Hawaii to
avoid religious obligations as PRESIDENT at the White House.
His children do not receive Christmas presents.

Let's just face the facts and quit trying to cover the truth, we have
a muslim for president in the White House, and he has no knowledge
of American history.
