Baby Tasmanian Devils Born At Taronga Zoo (VIDEO)

Don't let the name "Tasmanian devil" fool you. These four baby devils, or joeys, are super cute.

In the video below, the Tasmanian devil keepers at Syndey, Australia's Taronga Zoo hold the four babies for the first time, during the zoo's breeding season.

According to ZooBorns, their mother Nina snuggles around them as a keeper lifts each out to determine its gender. The litter includes one girl and three baby boys.

This comes as good news to the zoo. Tasmanian devil breeding centers have been working to fight extinction, as the devils are threatened by Devil Facial Tumor Disease. The disease, which already wiped out sixty percent of the wild devil population, causes tumors to form around the animal's face. This limits their eating ability and eventually results in starvation.

Tasmanian Devils are under attack by a carcinogenic virus. The wild population is being decimated and may be a thing of the past if a cure is not found.

How cute are they, it amazes me at how baby animals can capture your hart but when they grow up they aren't any where close to capturing your heart.

It is a horrible to see that man can kill off so much, and while these animals aren't really cuddly pets, they are still beautiful animals.

While man has indeed contributed to many extinctions, this species is threatened because of a very nasty disease, not hunting.

Hunting isn't the only way man causes extinction. Habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change have all claimed numerous species without the need for bullets. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the outbreak of this disease among the population were caused by poor genetic diversity (no resistance) due to small population size, prompted by any and all of the above factors, to include hunting.

It's quite nice to see that they've been successfully bred in captivity. The little buggers are suffering from a serious threat. Due to them being so inbred in the wild they've developed a form of cancer that's actually contagious. Breeding them in captivity and maybe even selectively to cut down on the inbreeding might help their population rebound a bit.

I showed this photo --- hiding the name "Tasmanian Devil" --- to my grandson. He guessed "baby mice?" "Baby rats?" "Baby squirrels?"

I then did my imitation of the Tasmanian Devil from the Bugs Bunny cartoons, just to give him a hint. He said, "Sarah Palins?"
