Phil Gramm Endorses Rick Perry, Friend And Former Student

Rick Perry

First Posted: 08/13/11 12:05 PM ET Updated: 10/13/11 06:12 AM ET

Former senator and current banker Phil Gramm of Texas -- well-connected to big donors but controversial for his role in preventing tighter regulation of Wall Street -- told The Huffington Post yesterday that he is endorsing his former student and political protege, Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

The endorsement is not a surprise, but it is a mixed blessing.

"I'm for Rick and I will do what I can to help," Gramm said in an interview in Detroit. "He has been an effective governor. He is a determined guy from a small town who knows how to get things done."

Elected three times to the U.S. Senate and a presidential contender in 1996 (he tied with Sen. Bob Dole in Iowa), the former Texas A&M economics professor's visibility has faded in the raucous arena of Texas politics.

Gramm remains a potent behind the scenes force, however, connected to Wall Street and big donors through his nearly decade-long role as a banker and dealmaker with UBS bank. He also has a history of expertise in budget matters as a budget-cutter before being a budget-cutter was cool in the GOP.

Longtime friends and supporters of Gramm are expected to line up to support Perry -- many of them in an independent super PAC. Legally they will have to remain independent from the Perry campaign, and Gramm will be positioned between the PAC and the candidate. If he talks with one, though, he can't talk with the other.

Gramm's financial network is crucial to Perry, who will have access to Texas money, but, for the most part, not the money that pledged allegiance to George W. Bush and the larger Bush family network.

There is no love lost between the Bush and Perry camps. "Bush's Brain," consultant Karl Rove, essentially ran the Texas GOP during Bush's time as governor, and the Bush team found Perry -- a self-made, small-town character and former Democrat who ran and won the lieutenant governorship with Gramm's backing and grassroots effort -- to be an annoyance at best and embarrassment at worst.

Gramm's public endorsement comes with some political baggage. Gramm's efforts in the late 1990s to deregulate banking and prevent the regulation of derivatives is widely seen as having helped cause the economic bubble of the decade -- and subsequent catastrophic meltdown of 2008. In the midst of that meltdown, in his capacity as economic advisor to Sen. John McCain's campaign, Gramm infamously dismissed the looming collapse as a "mental recession." That remark alone, defended to the end, help seal McCain's reputation as a man out of touch with Main Street realities.

Gramm and Perry are close friends, going back to the days when Perry was a student of Gramm's at A&M. A mediocre student, Perry nevertheless impressed Gramm with his small-town grit and determination to be a pilot. "No one ever gave Rick anything, and he worked hard," he said. Perry was an Eagle Scout and finally fulfilled his dream in the Air Force. The implicit comparison to George W. was clear.

After Perry became governor, Gramm and his bank pushed a controversial proposal to allow the company to take out insurance polices on teachers and other workers, even though the workers themselves would not benefit. The plan, nicknamed the "dead peasant's insurance," never became law.

Ironically, Perry wasn't really Gramm's first choice. His ideal candidate is the GOP's "budget warrior," Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). But Ryan isn't running -- and his old friend Perry is.

I still struggle for the reason Phil Gramm has not been marched out in front of the Supreme Court of the United Stated and Guillotined for crimes against the American people.

We execute people for war crimes, Gramm committed economic genocide on the middle class.

Phil Gramm, huh?  Gee, where do you start?

Phil Gramm the author of the Gramm-Leachy-Biley Act (Financial Modernizations Act of 1999) and the  Commodities Futures Modernization Act of 2000)

If that isn't enough to scare the jebus out of intelligent Americans, I don't know what is.  He is one of the main reasons for this recession.

Then there is his wife Wendy Gramm, whose hands are just as dirty, especially considering her part in Enron.

Would America really want to hop right back into the fire?

I haven driven cross country from California to Florida 31 times on the 10, Texas is the longest, most boring part of the drive, mostly desert, pull into small towns to get gas and you can hear the banjos playing like in the movie Deliverence.

If you look up the famous Descendents of John Howland from the Mayflower you'll find George Bush SR. and Martha Bush listed they are both related, which explains the Texas saying "Nothing Says Lovin Like Marrying Your Cousin" and it also explains George Bush Jr.

Excuse me if I don't believe that he will be exposed.  This administration has done nothing to address the criminal element of the Bush administration so I doubt that they will do their job on Gramm either.

Now when we turn old or sick and can no longer work, we find out the well has run dry.
TAKE OUT THE BAD APPLES -- those ruining it!!!
Leave it for THOSE WHO PAY TAXES!!!
So to you Gov RICK PERRY and OTHERS who just want to get rid of it all together!!
REFORM IT!!!! and End This “come over here and get paid” System!!!
I myself am of both Mexican American and Anglo background. So hold on all of those people who love to yell racist. I have seen the abuse and burden put on our education system, hospitals, and government programs.
I myself became ill after working many years. I had EARNED enough Social Security credits and qualify for SSID. I was so embarrassed to seek help even though I had earned it . What was even more embarrassing was to see everyone else already getting HELP Spoke NOT A WORD OF ENGLISH! The government loves to reward Bad behavior. Its time you get what you pay for and stop paying for those who don't!!!
If you do reconsider a Reform instead of a Scrap, and one that protects those who have paid in, not the leave it to a state if they want one or not idea(since many states are broke)!!! I will Vote for you, Blog for you,
and help were I can!

imFed Up2012, you can rest assured that politicians like Rick Perry and Paul Ryan will have the well cemented up and covered over with daisies. Are you watching what the conservative agenda is all about? Words like Reform and compromise are expletive deletives in the conservative mindset. And how irresponsible you are to make a statement that certain people love to yell racism, especially when the racism is flagrant and in our faces. When blow-hards like Limbaugh, Hannity and OTHERS vowed to oppose the President and wished his presidency a failure from the day he took office before Healthcare Reform and his other programs were even announced. One can only assume that this hatred comes from racism. If you are truly "fed up" start by looking at what party really has your best interest in mind and you can only do that by looking at thier past and present beyond thier promises and posturing. Malcolm X once said "you must read so you won't love your enemies and hate your friends", how true.
11:33 PM on 08/18/2011
To Attack Dawg..You know whats worse than a Racist, some one who plays the race card and cries racism when people don't agree with them or don't share their views. You can assume all you want about how people who cant stand Obama are racist, just like one could only assume since you like to quote Malcolm X that you must also share the thinking and ideas of other like minds such as Rev Right, The Black Panthers Party, Black Power, Spread The Wealth, etc. No I don't Like Obama or Obamacare and No i don't Like Illegals or ANY PEOPLE feeding off the taxpayers and cranking out more babies. And that goes for BLACK, BROWN, WHITE, GREEN, BLUE, YELLOW--anybody period!!!
11:05 PM on 08/14/2011
There should be No More free education with free breakfast and free lunches for those who come here and also those already here wanting a free hand out. Make a fee or tax for those who live in apartments, rent and live in section 8 housing. Why do those who have worked to have a home get punished and those who sit on there rear ends with there hand out get it all for free!!!
04:52 AM on 08/26/2011
That is going a bit to far. some familys and single parents really do need this help. Children need the help. I have seen single parents that have latch key children and neigbors join in to to help. nine times out of ten both parents have to work. people are losing homes. you are sdaring me you sound like lick R ick Perry no heart
11:04 PM on 08/14/2011
SO WHAT IS THE FIX—GET THE ILLEGALS OFF THE SYSTEM!!!! Also Get those other Lazy people whose entire family refuse to pay Taxes!!(not just Illegals) The ones who refuse to marry because they get more benefits. Stop making Property Owners who have worked to have something, bear the burden. Why should we be the ones to pay for it all through rising property Taxes !!!
04:55 AM on 08/26/2011
I agree but Rick Perry are counting on their votes from their legal familys that live here.
11:03 PM on 08/14/2011
The Illegals get it all for free(because they broke the law and the kids get born here or so some claim!)...Oh and lets not forget Section 8 Housing..and help with Electricity and Phone..No I'm sorry I don't agree!!! NOT FOR THOSE WHO TAKE AND HAVE NEVER PUT IN!!!!
10:28 AM on 08/17/2011
The ones who take and never put in are the wealthy who don't pay thier fair share in taxes and take thier corporations over to other countries and hire those people for peanut wages. Most section 8ers pay something or a small portion of thier rent, I'm just asking wealthy people pay thier share too.

I agree I believe the boys need to home from Iraq and take care of the borders. Also the illegals get to be citizens get a post office box in border towns cash the checks go back to the mexico and spend the money in mexico never living in the united states. how many people knew that.PERRY IS COUNTING ON THE AMERICAN mexicans of these family to vote for him because he dose not secure the borders.
11:02 PM on 08/14/2011
Fix the problem...AND IT”S SO SIMPLE!!!!
Those who have not paid shall not stay!! Illegals for one have drained our system were there is nothing left for those of us who have put into the system. Many illegals come here with their water ready to break!!! or they say they had there children here already and file different birth date. They Get on the LoneStar Program (Food Stamps) and you guessed it the more kids, the more you get, even if both parents are illegal. They also get big ticket items like Medicaid. This get them free medical, Dental, and Vision as well as Free health check ups! If they don't have a ride to the Doctor, Dentist,or even the Drug Store the state will pick them up..If they do have a car, but don't have money for gas, they get paid for gas (50) cents per mile round trip!!!! Oh yeah, don't forget about WIC: Free Milk, Eggs, Cheese,Beans, Bread, Peanut Butter, Fruits, Vegetables, Cereal, Baby Formula, Etc, for their kids while they grow..this is in addition to the (Food Stamps) that is given for the whole family! It doesn't Stop There either, lets not forget about TANF, it gives money assistance ($1000). At least seniors paid there taxes, earned credits and pay 20% medical and still end up in a dough nut hole for their medicines.

When the Milk goes Sour:

Being from The Great state of Texas does not mean I agree with everything that you say Gov Rick Perry!
Please don't get me wrong...You have done some good things for Texas. I would have voted for you in a Texas heart beat had you not want to scrap Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid instead of trying to Reform it! You just don't leave Seniors and those Americans who have earned it like our veterans out in the cold. You don't leave it up to a state if they want a program or not.
10:37 AM on 08/17/2011
That's like saying I'd vote for you
Lucifer if you weren't so evil! What's your point? All programs that we the people are entitled to guys like Perry hate. He's in the pockets of rich charlatans like Phil Scamm!

Phil Gramm, George Bush, and Rick Perry all went to Texas A & M. They were not UT material.
This gives Texas A & M a bad name for having such poor graduates. But then again, Texas A & M is so redneck.
