Dog Meat Protest: Local Group Demonstrates Against South Korea's Consumption of Dogs And Cats

Dog Meat Protest
Please don't eat me, I'll be your best friend.

The San Francisco-based animal rights organization In Defense of Animals wants South Koreans to stop eating animals--at least the adorable ones, anyway.

The group is staging a protest in front of San Francisco's South Korean consulate this Tuesday, where it will be delivering a petition with over 15,000 signatures urging the South Korean government to do more to stop the consumption of dogs and cats inside of its borders.

This week's event is part of the "International Day of Action for South Korean Dogs and Cats" the organization is simultaneously holding in dozens of cities all over the world.

SF Weekly reports:

While it's now technically illegal to eat dogs and cats in South Korea, the government has not been good about enforcing the laws, thus allowing the tradition to continue in parts of the country, [In Defense of Animals Campaign Manager Robin] Dorman says. So killing dogs and cats is illegal, but the processing and sale of the animals is not, she added.

"The law is deliberately obscure," Dorman says.

Consumption of cats and dogs in South Korea has decreased in recent years as more people in the Land of the Morning Calm take these animals as pets, which has led to the formation of a burgeoning animal rights movement in the nation.

Earlier this year, bowing to domestic and international pressure, a major annual festival at Moran Market, the infamous outdoor market near Seoul where a majority of the country's dog meat is sold, was cancelled.

ABC 7 reports:

South Korea has come under scrutiny for the practice of eating dogs before, particularly during international sporting events hosted there, such as the 1998 Seoul Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted with Japan.

Some reports following the 2002 World Cup said the practice of torturing dogs before slaughter had ended, and that dogs killed for meat were killed instantly by electric shock.

In the late 1990s, there were efforts in Korea to classify dogs as livestock similar to cows or chickens and move them out of the black market, where their pre-slaughter treatment was particularly inhumane. Those efforts were stymied by anti-dog meat activists who pushed legislators away from moving the practice into an arena where it could be monitored and regulated.

Cat is consumed in South Korea much less frequently than dog; it is sometimes customarily boiled into a tonic to treat arthritis.

While it's illegal to sell dog or cat meat in the United States, 44 states allow for its consumption. The California Penal Code prohibits the consumption of any part of the carcass of an animal "traditionally or commonly kept as a pet."

Besides, what kind of heartless monster could eat something that knows how to flush a toilet?

I'm from South Korea and can't believe that people still eat dogs there. It's not like it's a poor country with nothing to eat like the North. And dogs unlike those ingrates cats will do everything to save your life something cats boycotted a long time ago. I am American moreso then Korean nowadays as evidenced by my perfect English. U S A! U S A!

I understand how people are attached to pets and although I don't have one right now, I really like dogs and cats, but is there really any difference between lamb chops and dog ribs?

In a pinch, any mammal is edible.

A big city euthanizes many stray cats and dogs; not sure what they do with the bodies. Could feed a lot of hungry people . . .

I have a good job, going on 10 years now, and I've never deliberately killed a cat or dog.

There are those whose job it is to kill stray dogs and cats, whether I have a job or not.

Koreans and chinese are cruel people. Is this sounds like prejudice, or an opinon based on reality. They throw cats into boiling water like we do lobsters..and skin puppies alive.....and put them out for sale. as meat..all skinned..while they are in shock...THIS WAS ON TV ON A NATIONAL GEOGRPHIC SPECIAL. I DIDNT SLEEP FOR A FEW NIGHTS AFTER I SAW THAT.....
IF I WOULD FIND A CHINESE OR KOREAN RESTAUANT IN THE USA SERVING THEM.....THE RESTUARAANT WILL NOT BE IN BUSINESS VERY LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Continue eating animals... I posted several statements on how I like my dogs.... if the moderators think that not allowing my post is fair - then I don't know what to say. I like eating many types of meet. In PA. we eat all sorts of cute little rabbits, deer, squirrel, and more - who is anyone to dictate what foods we choose to eat? Most of all this post is to share opinions. Sure the writer favors not eating dogs, but others should be able to share what they think too. I am for it. Imagine if this worked in the wild towards lions... "You can eat meet!!!" who cares what type of meet it is...

I understand that protesting the slaughter methods and consumption of certain animals is confronting the beliefs of the particular culture. But knowledge and compassion must be addressed. It could be the cattle industry of the U.S. or the meat production of South Korea. If the "production methods" remain primitive and horrific, then so are the cultures that consume them. Some people may respond with a flippant remark, such as "It was very tasty". And they may have succeeded in bothering a few others. But with all their human potential, they have failed. All the pain, rage and suffering changes the meat, and then the eater.
12:52 AM on 08/17/2011
Ok you went off the deep end with the last two sentences. So for that, I have to ask, how is an animal killed nicely? Think of that question. Can we kill them in a humane way...? Once they are dead they are dead. Look at the animals in the wild, they rip the limbs off each other and eat them while they are still alive and while their family is watching...

I don't think we should abuse any animal, and I hardly think that saying a certain food is tasty, is intentional to offend. - if you don't like eating meet, then stick to your diet, but don't pass off an opinion of taste as a succession to bother others. Your missing the main idea. I think everyone who came on this site was expecting a rally of people down talking the meet eaters... your wrong

Good post. The point here is that the dogs are deliberately tortured to death. In fact, according to the slaughterers, the more pain that is caused to the dog, the more "valuable" the meat. Obviously, the intention that drives this method of slaughter is very different from what goes in between animals in the wild. However, as we know, it's not so different from what goes on in rogue segments of the U.S. slaughtering industry. I am glad to stand up to deliberate cruelty, whether it occurs in another country or in my own. I'm also glad that when situations like this are exposed in the U.S., people from all over the world -- including South Korea -- make their objections heard, particularly on petitions that are circulated worldwide. Deliberate cruelty is deliberate cruelty, and it's never acceptable.

Well said. Very few slaughterhouses of any type are perfect and do what is best for that animal. Their only concern is production. The beating of a dog because the adrenalin makes the meat more nutritious or taste better is just legalized torture. Same with boiling cats for their 'tonic' - how does throwing a live cat into boiling water make this a more nutritional value?? There are too many herbal alternatives to use instead of the outdated and embarrasing method by these countries. Until these countries implement and ENFORCE animal welfare laws, I have no use for any product that they produce. Won't even go into the fur farming as this is an even more inhumane life and death for these animals.

I do not know about cats.I can tell you close to the DMZ,I did not see cats wandering around. However, there was always a guy selling "meat on a stick".Cooked over a hibachi type grill.Come out of a bar-ready to go to garrison and hungry,I would always buy a stick with mustard,Delicious.Strange thing was I didn't see alot of G.I.s eating the meat on a stick. What I can tell you is everything is backward there.Large rats, small squirrels, large spiders, small deer.Nothing to hunt but pheasant. It really is best you mind your own business.

The most horrible thing is the dogs are torchured in the most sickening way, it is unimaginably cruel what they do before they eat them, how demonically heartless people can be to inflict horrific suffering just for the heck of it. In many countries where people eat cows and pigs and ships there are some rules that at least expected to apply - like quick death for an animal, not so maybe in industrualized production of meat, but at least there is no planned prolonged torchure. Better to be vegetarian, if you can't - at least make sure you consume an animal who at least lived without too much suffering ( like organic small farms). But better to be a vegetarian, there is enough protein in non-meat products. In Korean, Chinese and some other cultures, prolonged torchuring an animal before eating or taking it's fur is kind of normal - which makes it so much more sick and horrific and total disgrace for humanity.

Unfortunately, most animals are treated bad during slaughter... I don't agree with that, but I did try dog meat, and its actually really good you might change your mind... I did not know what is was at first... If I did, I would never have eaten it... I never ate a ship, but Alligator is good too - I ran one over, and took it home... Fried 1/2 of it and grilled the rest - you can eat more than the tail - we ate everything. Delicious... this site is making me hungry.

change my mind? ewww, that is sick, what are you talking about, besides I prefer vegetarian food and I would never go and hunt, killing is not for me, I guess I have evolved a bit from animal state, I would never kill an animal for food even if I would starve to death. Taking someone's life then devouring flesh is kind of sick, actually it is alot sick.
And I do know how to spell "sheep", just slipped, whatever.

I am a owner of both a dog & cat. having said that I'm ok with people eating dogs & cats. I'd rather a family who might of gone hungry eat a cat or dog then see the animal be put to sleep and the family still go hungry.

A couple of comments by the author of this report are offensive, childish and completely inappropriate. I refer to the first and last sentences. Huffington Post is not news, it is pure editorializing, but one would think that there could be some editorial control over puerile and totally unnecessary attempts and rude and cruel humor.

I agree the author is stating opinions that are bias to one side instead of simply writing the information.

Why only horror for cats and dogs? Why not horror for all animals? There's truly no difference between the pain a dog feels and the pain a cow feels...
04:33 PM on 08/18/2011
That's true, but the extended torture of dogs that can last for hours is totally unnecessary. If it takes 10 minutes for a cow to bleed out before being processed, that is not acceptable to me, but at least the cow has a short amount of time before it doesn't feel anything. The Chinese and Korean method of doing this is absolutely outrageous.
