Quinn Declares August 19 'Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez Day' In Illinois

Move over, Casimir Pulaski. Illinois has two new honorees of a newly-christened statewide holiday, coming up this Friday: Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez Day.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn announced in a press release that he will declare August 19th a holiday that honors the father-son duo at the Chicago International Film Festival’s Annual Summer Gala, where Sheen is this year's guest of honor.

Quinn awarded the honor "in recognition of [Sheen and Estevez's] many contributions to the arts and other charitable causes" and welcomed their continuing support of the state’s film industry.

The pair will be attending Friday's gala and screening the Chicago premiere of Sheen's new film The Way, which Estevez directed. Proceeds from the event will benefit Cinema/Chicago's Educational Outreach program to promote media literacy, and the 47th Chicago International Film Festival in October.
