Rick Perry Touts Jobs Record Ahead Of 2012 (VIDEO)

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 08/15/11 02:05 PM ET Updated: 10/15/11 06:12 AM ET

DES MOINES, Iowa — Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Monday that he has the best economic record and executive experience in government of any rival in the Republican presidential field, contrasting his credentials with those of his top two opponents, Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann.

"I respect all the other candidates in the field but there is no one that can stand toe-to-toe with us," Perry told The Associated Press in an interview at the start of his first full day campaigning in the leadoff caucus state of Iowa.

Perry also offered up his first policy proposal as a candidate, calling for a six-month moratorium on federal business regulations that he said were holding back job growth nationally. Perry brought the proposal forward just as President Barack Obama was traveling to the Midwest for a bus tour and speeches on the economy.

It was nothing short of an attempt by Perry to establish himself as the strongest Republican able to challenge Obama on jobs -- and lay claim to Romney's mantel of jobs candidate.

HuffPost's Jason Cherkis reported earlier this month:

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Texas has created more jobs in the last year than any other state. These job openings have become known as the much-hyped, "Texas Miracle." In his February 2011 state-of-the-state address, Governor Rick Perry boasted: "Our economic strength is no accident. It's a testimony to our people, our entrepreneurs, and, yes, to the decisions made in this building. Employers from across the country and around the world understand that the opportunity they crave can be found in Texas, and they're headed our way, with jobs in tow."
...
Dig beneath the talking points and you find a more troubling picture: rising unemployment, a glut of low-wage jobs without benefits, overcrowded homeless shelters and public schools facing billions in budget cuts. Surita and Johnson have been airbrushed from the miracle. But they still can be found on the housing waiting lists and shelter entrances.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who has emphasized his business experience, sits atop national polls. But he's now facing a double-barreled threat from Perry, Texas' longest-serving governor who formally entered the GOP race Saturday, and Bachmann, the Minnesota congresswoman who won a test vote of Iowans that same day.

In the interview, Perry never directly criticized the two even when given opportunities to comment on them directly. Rather, he promoted his own job-growth and gubernatorial records – and let the contrast speak for itself.

Romney is stressing more his decades in the business world as he seeks to be seen as the strongest candidate on the economy. He's been criticized by former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman for Massachusetts ranking 47th in terms of job growth, while Utah ranked No. 1.

Perry sidestepped an opportunity to assail Romney, saying: "Trying to compare the job creation and the numbers of jobs with any other state is just not an apples to apples comparison."

But Perry also said that the more than 1 million jobs added to the rolls in Texas in his 10 years as governor make him the strongest choice for GOP voters on their top priority.

Perry also said Republicans were looking for a tested candidate, and that no other candidate had compiled the record of economic development or legislative success.

It was a reference to Bachmann.

She has faced criticism from rivals – including former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who dropped out of the race Sunday – who have accused her of having accomplished little in her three terms in the U.S. House compared with the record of a governor.

"It's a fair comparison," Perry said. "Understanding how that process works, but more importantly making that process work, of which we have done in Texas, is inarguably better than ... anyone who is aspiring to be the president."

Perry spent his first full day in Iowa at breakfast with Gov. Terry Branstad, a Republican, at the governor's mansion in Des Moines. He also was visiting the Iowa State Fair, and meeting privately with other Republican elected officials. He was planning to travel to Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, before holding a business roundtable in Dubuque Tuesday.

Branstad said it's clear Perry will compete hard in Iowa.

"He will compete," Branstad said, adding: "He's kind of an exciting new entry into the race, not to detract from the other candidates."

The Perry campaign is out with a new web ad touting the Texas governor's record on jobs.

No Half of Texas's job growth did not come from government hiring. Actually only about 70,000 jobs out of 1,000,000 or so.

http://www.bls.gov/sae/data.htm):

Counting from the beginning of the recession (December 2007) the Texas public sector has grown 3.8%, or a little under 70,000 employees. This is faster than normal employment, but it's not off the charts.

Given that the Texas economy has grown so much and private sector jobs have grown so much, that doesn't strike me as an unsustainable growth in the public sector.

But, just in case you're really worried about it, you can lay your fears to rest because in the last year the Texas public sector has shrunk by 26,000 jobs. In the last 12 months, Texas lost 31,300 federal employees, trimmed 3,800 state jobs, and increased local government jobs by 8,400 jobs.

False claim, "Sure, Texas has lots of jobs, but they're mostly low-paying/minimum wage jobs". Let's look at the data. Here's a link: http://www.bls.gov/oes/oes_dl.htm

If this were true, all these new low-paying jobs should be dragging down the wages data, right? But if we look at the wages data since the beginning of the recession , see linked chart.

Texas median hourly wage is $15.14 almost exactly in the middle of the pack (28th out of 51 regions). Given that they've seen exceptional job growth (and these other states have not) this does not seem exceptionally low.

New jobs in Texas, the jobs that Texas seems to stand alone in creating at such a remarkable pace, are NOT predominately low paying jobs.

Perry's jobs record is abysmal at it's best, since the Oil Patch is the real motor of jobs in Texas. He has a record of murdering an innocent man, who was convicted on flimsy evidence, but he talks to GOD! GOD HIMSELF told Perry to run for the presidency, they're just really good friends!(Like Forrest Gump) Perry is a loose cannon, like all the TEA party-ers! These Yahoos are confrontational and belligerent to draw attention to their own narrow-minded content! These confrontations are for maximum exposure with lacking content. If they had any real verification of the false's and Innuendos they espouse,it would be different, but no proof is ever provided and many pronouncements are debunked! Perry's comment on seceding is his grandiose Texas tongue trash trashing. He has been in office too long and his tenure has gone to his head. The phrase, "Absolute power, corrupts", applies here!

He must be something of a hero to all of you since you keep writing about him so much. At least people in Texas are working while the rest of the country is just about on the starvation line. I'd rather have God on my side any day than have Him against me. What is wrong with Perry talking to whomever he wants to. He still has the same freedoms you have unless yours has been taken away by the present administration. They are trying but will neve succeed as long as there are men like Rick Perry to pick up the mess we are in now and try to make something worthy out of it again.

I find it humorous to see the Republican supporters hopelessly grasping at any candidate they could possibly believe in, even by the slimmest chance. And even if that candidate has repeatedly lied about himself, his positions, his accomplishments, and especially what he/she intends to do as president.

The Republicans are soooooooooo desperate.

On the other hand the Democrats have to remain with a person who has shown no backbone when it comes to standing up to the Republicans when it really counts.

The Democrats are soooooooo screwed.

Wait a minute........that means that the United States of America is "Up The Creek Without A Paddle".

I guess for the next 4 years the middle-income people are SOL regardless of who's running the government..

Seeing as how Texas leads the nation in percentage of people working for minimum wages you must have lowered expectations.

Not surprised he's running on his 'record", they all do, they just fancy it up with whipped cream and a cherry and call it great. In his last election for governor, only 33% of registered Tx voters voted. LOL his record like himself is a pure BS!

In my opinion Rick Perry is a creep. He is radical, insincere, and a good snake oil salesman - not exactly qualities fitting a president. I am already tired of his Texas twang and arrogant attitude. Bush had his faults but at least he appeared harmless, which, of course, he really wasnt, but Perry is like a shark in the water - drawing blood with every contact. His ideas and right-wing philosophy would be very dangerous for this country. Texas - you can have him.

I think he would make a fine president. He's got the right idea of reeling in the over paid public sector worker wages which are causing the whole debt problem in the first place. And to quit giving out so many handouts to people who find it easier to collect a welfare check than to get a job.

When you have cops and fireman making over 100,00.00$ a year and teachers making 70,000.00$ for only 9 months of work then yes it adds to all state budgets.
05:22 PM on 08/16/2011
That would be all those conservatives in the red states I guess. As you all suck more money from the federal tit, may I suggest you get a second job so MY tax's can be lowered and I can stop supporting you. Oh by the way stop taking so much time off from work for all these rallies you spend so much time at, the rest of us actually work for a living.

Gov. Perry will be the next President of the United States and deservedly so. He has a clear track record of success for Texas when the rest of the economy is in full collapse. Perry has the intelligence, leadership skills, heart, conviction, principles and a successful record of adding jobs while Obama losses them.

"Perry also offered up his first policy proposal as a candidate, calling for a six-month moratorium on federal business regulations that he said were holding back job growth nationally."

Assuming that regulations are holding businesses back, and its not that they are trying to squeeze as much profit out of people, without having to hire anyone else because of the lack of demand, how would this help?

If companies knew that the moratorium was for 6 months, they wouldn't hire long term employees, they would at best hire temps, to help them best take quick advantage of the reduced regulations and make a quick buck, then return to business as usual when the 6 month expired

as time draws closer, so do the cameras and we will see the real picture here. he will, like most politicians (notice i don't say gop or democratic) his real self will emerge and he will start to look like alot of the rest of the bunch...you know they all look alike? i believe ron paul will stay true to his message but you will see some of these other potentials will tarnish, will be in the back pocket of the wealthy too...the party will see it too but they will turn a blind eye rather than think what is truly good for America and not their own party.

only thing is, greed wins them all...
they only want to win...that's all, just to win.
if they win, we all lose except the wealthy.
