Mitt Romney Contrasts His Business Experience With Rick Perry

Romney Contrasts With Perry

STEVE PEOPLES   08/15/11 03:51 PM ET   AP

LITCHFIELD, N.H. — Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney suggested Monday that his new GOP rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, doesn't have the business experience needed to be president.

"Understanding how the economy works by having worked in the real economy is finally essential in the White House. And I hope people recognize that," Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, told reporters. "I respect the other people in this race, but I think the only other person who has that kind of extensive private sector experience besides me in the Republican race is Herman Cain," the former Godfather's Pizza chief executive.

Romney noted his 25 years in the private sector when asked about job growth in Texas under Perry, who has not held a private sector job as an adult, and the Texan's impact on the Republican presidential contest.

The GOP front-runner in national polls, Romney did not mention Perry by name when he made that comment but the contrast he drew was obvious and provided a window into how he would address Perry's emergence as a serious contender in the GOP race.

"I'm not going to vary my speech and my vision for the American people based upon the political winds of the day," Romney told reporters during a campaign appearance at Litchfield Technology. "I wish Rick the very best. As the process goes on, we'll see whose background and skill most fits the needs of the country at a critical time like this."

Romney also made what amounted to a verbal shrug at the weekend buzz over rival Michele Bachmann's first-place victory at the Iowa straw poll and Perry's formal announcement of a candidacy, saying that most voters simply aren't paying attention to politics in mid-August.

"For most Americans, the attention is focused on the election after Labor Day," he said.

Later, at the Common Man restaurant in Plymouth, Romney largely stuck to his strategy of assailing President Barack Obama on the economy. And following the lead of other Republican contenders, he encouraged the president to call Congress back early from its summer recess to address the fragile economy and high unemployment.

"The president this week is in three states on a bus tour. And he's going to be going on a vacation to Martha's Vineyard for 10 days. I wish the president were in Washington calling back Congress and dealing with the challenges we have," Romney said. "In some respects I think he's more concerned about keeping his job than spending the time necessary to help Americans get their jobs."

Romney: "I bought businesses and then closed them creating - well, not jobs exactly, but wealth for - well, for me."

Perry- "I created the most sub-minimum wage jobs in the country!

Romney has great experience in cutting jobs and funneling money to the top. Perry has great experience in creating minimum wage jobs, and taking credit for the energy boom.

Both seem like they would do a great job of saving our economy.

Federal spending is evil to a conservative unless its going right into their pocket, or they can pose by the new buildings and infrastructure projects

Business experience? You mean like George "I turned a surplus into a deficit" Bush's business experience? Or George "I made no attempt to pay for either the two wars I started or the Medicare drug plan" Bush's business experience?

Lest we forget:

Romney's contribution to the business world was at Bain Capital, where he specialized in Leveraged buyouts just like GORDON GECKO. Yep, he bought up companies, broke them up into little pieces and sold off the parts.

That is what he has in mind for this country.

Mittens says he's a job creator, of course what he fails to tell anyone is that those jobs were uncreated in the US and recreated over seas. Good On Yah, Mittens! Way to help the home team!

Perry's claim to job creation is getting more minimum wage jobs at Jack In the Box and Whatta Burger.... Brilliant! Texans don't pay any state income tax so there's only regressive taxes in place... everyone pays the same rates for sales tax, property taxes and the like... Great idea... tax the poor and feed the rich..... Great idea Rick... guess he just has a hard time with that Christian thing in more ways than one.

Wait until Giuliani enters the race, and he will. He's the only Republican who currently out-polls Obama, so he won't be able to resist jumping into the crazymobile.

Romney will have to pull the rabbit out of the hat to win the nomination.

The republican's only defense is to "attack" Obama. None of them have enough kudos to run on their own accomplishments and expertise. Obama was the only candidate in the 2008 campaign that did "not" tear down other candidates to move himself forward. He played "defense" the entire time because the rest of them wanted to bring him down. Now these candidates want to do the same thing, bring down Obama instead of pick themselves up. You could put all three of these candidates together and wouldn't make "one" good republican candidate for 2012 and that's a total shame.

All very nice. So Romney aligns himself with Cain. End of Romney. Perry and Bachmania fight it out. The most extreme hater will win. And earn the eternal shame of losing to Obama by the biggest margins ever..Obama 2012!

If there are any real journalists left in America, they will investigate the relationship between Perry's big political donors and the goodies--government contracts, etc.--that he handed out to them.

Wow. It's interesting that a governor as terrible as 'Slick Rick' is already being called the winner of the nomination by the media. I hope America takes a closer look before supporting this lousy governor.

For the ultra-conservative, 'bagger electorate who votes in the Republican primary, it's nothing about things like jobs or business.

For the duration of the campaign, Rick Perry is gonna be a one-note pony and use his Jesus bona fides to bludgeon Romney's Mormonism over the head and get all of the evangelicals excited.
